Copy planning in a concurrent garbage collector

A garbage collector is disclosed that permits extensive separation of mutators and the garbage collector from a synchronization perspective. This relative decoupling of mutator and collector operation allows the garbage collector to perform relatively time-intensive operations during garbage collection without substantially slowing down mutators. The present invention makes use of this flexibility by first conservatively determining which objects in a set of regions of interest are live, then planning where to copy the objects (preferably including clustering), and finally performing the actual copying.

Large-scale layer 2 metropolitan area network

A system and method permits the creation of very-large metropolitan area networks (MANs) using Layer 2 (L2) switching technology. Different groups of L2 switches are logically organized into Islands. Connected to each Island are a plurality of customers sites, and an interconnect fabric couples the Islands together. The Islands cooperate to provide a Virtual Ethernet Connection (VEC) to each set of customer sites being coupled together. Customers identify their traffic that corresponds to a VEC by labeling or tagging it with a Customer-Equipment VLAN Identifier (CE-VLAN ID). Within each Island, the CE-VLAN ID specified by the customer's traffic (and hence the corresponding VEC) is mapped to a unique MAN Provider-Equipment VLAN ID (PE-VLAN ID). To prevent the formation of loops, the Islands run the Inter-MAN Control Protocol (IMCP), which represents a modified version of the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP).

Sample component trapping, release, and separation with membrane assemblies interfaced to electrospray mass spectrometry

ActiveUS20080047330A1Optimization of massMass performanceSamplingParticle separator tubesAmount of substanceESI mass spectrometry
The invention provides a method and apparatus for trapping, releasing and / or separating sample components in solution passing through a channel with or without packing material present by passing ion current through the channel driven by an electric field. A portion of the ion current comprises cation and / or anion species generated from second solution flows separated from the sample solution flow path by semipermeable membranes. Cation and / or Anion ion species generated in the second solution flow regions are transferred into the sample solution flow path through ion selective semipermeable membranes. Ion current moving along the sample solution flow path is controlled by varying the composition of the second solutions and / or changing the voltage between membrane sections for a given sample solution composition. The sample composition may also be varied separately or in parallel to enhance trapping, release and / or separation efficiency and range. The invention when interfaced to an Atmospheric Pressure Ion Source, that may include Electrospray Ionization, with mass spectrometric analysis enables independent control of the on-line sample separation process and the Atmospheric Pressure Ion Source or Electrospray ionization processes.

Hydrate-based desalination with hydrate-elevating density-driven circulation

In hydrate-based desalination or other water purification conducted using naturally buoyant or trapped-gas-assisted buoyancy hydrate in a hydrate fractionation column, a portion of fresh or purified product water is extracted from an upper, hydrate dissociation region of the fractionation column and reintroduced into a lower portion of the fractionation column at a point above but generally near a product water / saline water interface. The difference in density between the reintroduced product water and the fluid in the hydrate fractionation column above the point of reintroduction (water, hydrate, and gas) drives a natural circulation system which enhances the rate at which hydrate rises into the hydrate dissociation region.

Data processing apparatus

A data processing apparatus, and in particular to a data processing apparatus for use in a telecommunications system is disclosed which seeks to provide an improved technique for handling asynchronous events in a synchronous processing environment. The data processing apparatus comprises a data processing unit operable to process data from a synchronous data stream. The data processing apparatus also comprises conversion logic operable to receive an asynchronous event for processing by the data processing unit, the conversion logic being further operable to create event data representing the asynchronous event for transmission in the synchronous data stream. Providing conversion logic which converts an asynchronous event into event data transmissible within the synchronous data stream enables the data processing unit, when operating in a synchronous environment, to handle the asynchronous event in the same manner as any other synchronous data it may receive. Hence, the operation of the data processing unit can be effectively decoupled from the asynchronous event, the occurrence of which may undesirably affect the performance of the data processing unit.

Solid-oxide fuel cell system having an upstream reformate combustor

ActiveUS20060024541A1Avoid scorchingAssisting in overall heatingHydrogenFuel cell auxillariesCombustorFuel cells
A solid-oxide fuel cell system wherein a reformate combustor is disposed in the reformate flow path between a hydrocarbon reformer and a fuel cell stack. At system start-up, reformate is partially burned within the combustor by admitting combustion air, and the partially-burned reformate is passed through the anode chambers of the stack to warm the anodes. In addition, reformate is passed through a cathode-air heat exchanger to warm combustion air entering the cathode chambers of the stack. The combustor may continue to be supplied with a low level of air during steady-state operation of the SOFC, thereby providing a moist environment within the anode chambers to prevent coking of the anodes and providing additional heat to the reformate. The combustor decouples the reformer from the stack thermodynamically, permitting the reformer and the stack each to run in its own optimal temperature range.

Switching amplifier for driving reactive loads

A switching amplifier drives balanced piezoelectric or other capacitive or reactive loads with a minimum physical electronics volume, enabling a compact arrangement that can combine amplifier and transducer at the same physical location. Power supply current is minimized by using two or more transducers driven with phase-shifted signals, resulting in stored energy being cycled between the transducers rather than being carried over the power supply lines for storage in a power supply. Auxiliary power supply capacitors to store energy coming out of the load can thus be minimized. The modulation scheme puts the switching frequencies in common-mode while the baseband signals are differential mode. The common-mode switching frequency signals are blocked from the loads by a common-mode inductor. The common-mode inductor can be physically small as a result of the large baseband load currents being in differential mode. Low-volume load filters are made possible by the fact that they are not called upon to filter signals at the fundamental switching frequency but only at higher frequencies. The loads are biased independently of the baseband signals. The switching amplifier can drive balanced loads comprising two, three or more individual load elements.
