Structure to achieve sensitivity and linear density in tunneling GMR heads using orthogonal magnetic alignments

The present invention provides a tunneling magneto-resistive read sensor structure that improves sensitivity and linear density of the sensor structure. The sensor includes first and second electrodes and a stack positioned between the electrodes. The stack includes first and second free layers with magnetization orientations that are biased relative to each other. A tunneling barrier (insulating layer) or non-magnetic metal spacer is positioned between the first and second free layers. A sense current is passed between the first and second free layers of the stack. The amount of current passing through the first and second free layer changes based upon the orientation of the first and second free layers relative to each other.

Variable stiffness steering mechanism for catheters

ActiveUS20110251519A1Enabling controlWithout sacrificing torsional strengthGuide wiresEndoscopesTorsional rigidityEngineering
A catheter assembly including a tapered steering spine having a varying stiffness along an axial length. The tapered steering spine is tailored to provide increasing flexibility from proximal to distal in a way that makes the bend radius more uniform along the length of the steering section. In one embodiment, the tapered steering spine includes structures on adjacent rings that engage with each other when the steering section is flexed to limit the minimum bend radius to a predetermined minimum and which enhances the torsional rigidity of the steering section regardless of the degree of flexure of the steering section. The limited bend radius can prevent excessive bending of components such as fiber optics. The enhanced torsional rigidity can negate the need for torque braid in the section of the catheter shaft that surrounds the tapered steering spine.

System and method for transferring data to and from a magnetic shift register with a shiftable data column

InactiveUS7236386B2More sensitivityMagnitude fringing fieldDigital storageShift registerProcessor register
A magnetic shift register utilizes a data column comprising a thin wire of magnetic material. A writing element selectively changes the direction of the magnetic moment in the magnetic domains to write the data to the data column. Associated with each domain wall are large magnetic fringing fields concentrated in a very small space. These magnetic fringing fields write to and read from the magnetic shift register. When the domain wall is moved close to another magnetic material, the fringing fields change the direction of the magnetic moment in the magnetic material, effectively ā€œwritingā€ to the magnetic material. A reading element similar to a tunneling junction comprises a free layer and a pinned layer of magnetic material. Fringing fields change the direction of the magnetic moment in the free layer with respect to the pinned layer, changing electrical resistance of the reading element and ā€œreadingā€ data stored in the magnetic shift register.

Compression connection

A chromatography and fluidic device with connections capable of automated component changing, diagnostic leak and current sensing. The chromatography-electrospray device contains a chromatography column, a pre-column, a spray emitter, or other fluidic component imbedded within one or more inserts. The inserts are robotically placed in receiving hardware, and a ā€œplug and playā€ compression fitting connection mechanism makes the fluidic seals in an automated fashion. A plurality of sensors capable of detecting leaks is situated in the device near leak-prone regions. The electrospray emitter has a current sensing electrode in proximity of the electrospray region, capable of detecting the electrospray current. In conjunction with an electronics system, these sensors allow for system and component diagnostics. The diagnostic information may then be used for manual or automated system repair.

The nucleotides can then be polymerized into oligomers. The design of the oligomers will depend on the design of the overall architecture. Simple architectures may be designed by any methods. However, more complex architectures may be design using software, such as caDNAno (as described at cadnano.org / docs.html, and herein incorporated by reference), to minimize errors and time. The user may input the desired shape of the architecture into the software and once finalized, the software will provide the oligomer sequences of the bricks to create the desired architecture. The length of the oligomers may be from about 10 to about 10,000, or less than about 9,000, less than about 8,000, less than about 5,000 nucleotides in length. The length of the oligomer will be optimized for the type of architecture used.
