Marine transmission with a cone clutch used for direct transfer of torque

A transmission for a marine propulsion system uses a cone clutch in such a way that, when in a forward gear position, torque is transmitted from an input shaft, or driving shaft, to an output shaft, or driven shaft, solely through the cone clutch. When in forward gear position, driving torque between the driving and driven shafts is not transmitted through any gear teeth. When in reverse gear position, torque is transmitted through an assembly of the bevel gears.

Electronic method of controlling propulsion and regeneration for electric, hybrid-electric and diesel-electric marine crafts, and an apparatus therefor

A method of programming and setting parameters for a computer unit that regulates the interface between the operator of a marine vessel and the vessel's electric generation and propulsion systems. The invention describes the regulation of energy producing devices, energy storage devices and drive motors and propellers in both propulsion and regeneration modes. This invention simplifies and automates most of the operation of marine electric, hybrid electric, or diesel electric propulsion because the only controls requiring operator intervention are three generator modes: OFF, AUTO and ON, an alarm, an override switch and one or more throttle(s). This helm control can be duplicated in different areas of the vessel. All automatic modes required to regulate forward movement, reverse, emergency power, zero drag, propeller freeze and regeneration are all controlled by a logic using a combination of generator mode, the position of the throttles, the speed and the stored parameters of the vessel.

Marine personnel monitoring, overboard detection, alert and rescue system

A system for detecting and locating overboard personnel of a vessel. The system includes a plurality of transmitter units and an onboard receiver. A transmitter is assigned to be worn by each person to be monitored by the system. Each transmitter provides a unique identifier signal to the onboard receiver. The onboard receiver is initialized to establish an initial identifier configuration. The onboard receiver then continuously monitors its reception to detect any change in said initial identifier configuration. The onboard receiver triggers an alert in the event of detection of a change in said initial identifier configuration. In a first embodiment the assigned transmitters are activated prior to establishing the initial identifier configuration and the initial identifier configuration consists of all active transmitter identifiers present. In this first embodiment, the alert condition is initiated upon a failure of receipt of one of the identifiers. In a second embodiment, none of the transmitters are activated until it is submerged, the initial identifier configuration consists of no transmitter identifiers present. In this second embodiment, the alert condition is initiated upon receipt of a transmitter identifier. The system can also include a real time clock to record the time of an alert condition and / or a satellite positioning system to record the location of an alert.

Integrated high frequency marine power distribution arrangement with transformerless high voltage variable speed drive

A marine power distribution arrangement utilizes generators driven at standard or higher than normal speeds and / or having a number of poles to produce electric power at a standard 50 / 60 Hz frequency or substantially higher than the standard 50 / 60 Hz frequency, such as 400 Hz. Each generator is a multi-phase, multi-circuit generator supplying isolated outputs on a plurality of lines to a propulsion power converter having isolated inputs to provide variable frequency, variable voltage power to a ship propulsion motor and to a service power converter to provide ship service power at a standard AC frequency or DC and at standard voltage for a service load. With this arrangement, power conversion transformers can, for the most part, be eliminated, thereby reducing the size and weight of the distribution system.

Speed control system and method for watercraft

A watercraft has an engine and a remote controller. The engine has a throttle valve unit. The remote controller provides a command signal indicative of a position of the throttle valve unit. A watercraft velocity sensor senses an actual speed of the watercraft to provide an actual speed signal. A control data input device selectively provides a control device with a manual mode signal and a constant speed mode signal. The constant speed mode signal is accompanied by a target speed signal. The control device controls the throttle valve unit based upon the command signal in the manual mode. The control device controls the throttle valve unit in the constant speed mode such that an actual speed of the watercraft coincides with the target speed of the watercraft once a state of equilibrium is reached. The control device starts the manual mode in place of the constant speed mode without the manual mode signal if the command signal changes while the control device controls the throttle valve unit in the constant speed mode.

Subsea actuator assemblies and methods for extending the water depth capabilities of subsea actuator assemblies

InactiveUS7108006B2Improved hydraulic pressure compensation systemIncrease fluid pressureOutboard propulsion unitsEqualizing valvesOcean bottomPressure transmission
A hydraulic pressure compensation system for valve actuator assemblies is described having particular application for subsea wellhead installations. The compensation system includes at least one valve actuator assembly having a housing that retains a reciprocable piston therewithin. The piston is spring biased into its fail safe configuration. The valve actuator assembly is hydraulically associated with an accumulator reservoir that defines a closed fluid reservoir and an open fluid reservoir that is exposed to ambient pressures. The two chambers are separated by a membrane. The valve actuator assembly is also operationally associated with a fluid pressure intensifier that boosts the ambient pressure of the accumulator so that an increased fluid pressure may be transmitted to the actuator assembly to bias the actuated valve toward its fail safe configuration. In a described embodiment, the fluid pressure intensifier comprises a housing that defines a chamber having a fluid inlet and fluid outlet. A dual-headed piston is moveably retained within the housing. The piston has an enlarged piston face and a reduced size piston face. Fluid pressure entering the fluid inlet is exerted upon the enlarged piston face, and due to the difference of piston face sizes, an increased pressure is transmitted out of the fluid outlet.
