The present invention provides a method and apparatus for increasing the performance of world-wide-web traffic over the Internet. A distributed network of specialized nodes of two types is dispersed around the Internet. A web client's requests are directed to a node of the first type chosen to be close to the client, and the client communicates with this node using a standard protocol such as HTTP. This first node receives the request, and communicates the request to a node of the second type chosen to be close to the request's ultimate destination (e.g., a web server capable of generating a response to the request.) The first node communicates the request to the second node using a different, specialized, protocol that has been designed for improved performance and specifically to reduce traffic volume and to reduce latency. The second node receives communication from the first node using this specialized protocol, converts it back to a standard protocol such as HTTP, and forwards the request to the destination computer or server. Responses from the destination to the client take the corresponding reverse route, and also are carried over a specialized protocol between the two nodes. In addition, these nodes can employ other techniques such as web caches that avoid or improve some communication steps. Thus, specialized, proprietary, or complex protocols and techniques can be quickly deployed to enhance web performance without requiring significant changes to the clients or servers.

The present invention provides an integrated circuit comprising a system bus to which a processor is connectable, and first and second peripheral buses to which peripheral units used by said processor are connected, the first peripheral bus operating at a higher clock speed than the second peripheral bus. Further, the integrated circuit comprises bridge logic for providing an interface between the system bus and the peripheral buses to enable signals to be passed between the system bus and the peripheral buses, the bridge logic comprising clock resynchronisation logic for synchronising the system bus and the peripheral buses. Through the provision of first and second peripheral buses operating at different clock speeds, the integrated circuit of the present invention provides a great deal of flexibility for reducing the power consumption of the integrated circuit as compared with a similar integrated circuit having only one peripheral bus. Since the power consumption of each peripheral bus is proportional to the clock frequency and capacitance, significant power consumption savings can be realised by ensuring that each peripheral unit is connected to the slowest peripheral bus appropriate for that peripheral unit.

A switchable magnetic device includes a first magnet and a second magnet, both of which are essentially cylindrical. Magnets are housed in a housing made from pole pieces. Pole pieces are ferromagnetic. Lower magnet is fixedly mounted in the housing while upper magnet can rotate within the housing. Upper magnet is formed with notches or grooves along its vertical side walls. These notches or grooves receive downwardly depending arms of bar. Bar is received inside a groove formed on boss. Boss is connected to a short bar that, in turn, is fixedly connected to a handle or lever. By this means, rotation of handle or lever causes rotation of second magnet. An implantable system and method for deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatments. The implantable system is sufficiently small and self-contained to enable implantation of the entire system within the brain, or optionally within the brain and the surrounding tissue. The system comprises an implantable inductor on which a voltage is induced when subjected to an electromagnetic field, and an implantable device comprising a housing, stimulating elements at an exterior surface of the housing, and electronics within the housing and electrically connected to the implantable inductor. The electronics produces a brain-stimulating current from the voltage induced on the implantable inductor and then delivers the brain-stimulating current to the stimulating elements. Deep brain stimulation is performed by subjecting the inductor to an electromagnetic field to induce a voltage on the inductor that powers the electronics to produce and deliver the brain-stimulating current to the stimulating elements.

A method facilitating the transfer of information from a media or data capture device to a larger device while providing valuable feedback about the transfer is described. A transfer device including a simple user interface that can be easily implemented on a media or data capture device provides feedback about the transfer operation, enabling the user to take action when necessary. For example, the user is advised if the transfer is complete or, alternatively, that the transfer has failed and needs to redone. Feedback is provided by visual signals and may also be accompanied by audible signals. All necessary transfer functionality is included on the media capture device, thereby avoiding the requirement for dedicated software on a host (or pipeline) device, such as a cellular phone. This expands the number of pipeline devices that can be utilized with particular media capture devices. As long as there is a correct interface between the data capture device and the pipeline device, all the necessary transfer functionality can be included in the data capture device.

A process for repairing a compressor rear frame of a gas turbine engine. The process entails removing a seal flange from the inner casing wall of the frame to define an annular face on the casing wall, and fabricating a replacement flange to have an annular face with a radial width greater than the radial width of the annular face of the casing wall. The faces of the flange and wall are mated to form a joint, a penetration-enhancing flux is deposited adjacent the joint, and a single-pass gas tungsten arc welding operation is performed to form a root weldment that extends completely through the joint. The flux is then removed and a gas tungsten arc welding operation is performed to deposit a filler on the root weldment and form a second weldment that completely overlays but does not penetrate through the root weldment.

The method includes allocating, in a first computing system of the group of computing systems, a pool of privileged communication resources from a privileged resource controller to a communications controller. The communications controller designates the privileged communication resources from the pool for use in handling individual ones of the zero-copy communications, thereby avoiding a requirement to obtain individual ones of the privileged resources from the owner of the privileged resources at setup time for each zero-copy communication.
