Continent ostomy port

A continent ostomy port device has a face plate defining a selectively sealable aperture which is alignable with the opening of a stoma formed in the body of a user of the device. A closure portion is adapted to permit selective and repeatable covering and uncovering of the aperture in the face plate. A catheter portion extends from one side of the face plate and extends proximally, and one end of the catheter portion is disposed interior of the user's body, within the ostomy site, when the port device is in normal use position. The catheter portion has continuous exterior and interior side walls, the latter defining a major lumen. The catheter portion is sized and shaped appropriately for non-surgical installation through a stoma to a sufficient distance that the presence of the catheter portion within the stoma provides a physical barrier which reduces the incidence of stoma prolapse, without the use of extraneous, externally applied materials or additional surgery. Retaining structure is connected to the catheter of the continent ostomy port and is non-surgically, snugly fittable into the stoma, to cause the port device to be self-retaining in a normal use position within a stoma of the user, without the need for special surgery or extraneous, external fixation materials such as tape, belts, and adhesives. The retaining structure is also usefully connected to other medical catheters.

Pad for use with continent ostomy port

A continent ostomy port device has a generally planar face plate defining a selectively sealable aperture which is alignable with the opening of a stoma formed in the body of a user of the device. A closure portion is connected to the generally planar face plate adjacent to the aperture and is adapted to permit selective and repeatable covering and uncovering of the aperture in the generally planar face plate. A catheter portion extends from one side of the face plate and extends proximally, and one end of the catheter portion is disposed interior of the user's body, within the ostomy site, when the port device is in normal use position. The catheter portion has continuous and generally cylindrical exterior and interior side walls, the latter defining a major lumen. The catheter portion is sized and shaped appropriately for non-surgical insertion through a stoma to a sufficient distance that the presence of the catheter portion within the stoma provides a physical barrier which reduces the incidence of stoma prolapse, without the use of extraneous, externally applied materials or additional surgery. A removable cartridge is sized and shaped to fit snugly and slideably within the major lumen of the catheter portion of the device so as to be liquid-tight and to thereby prevent inadvertent escape of body waste material from the stoma through the device when the cartridge is in place, so that the user is not required to wear an ostomy bag, and to further thereby clean the interior side wall of the catheter portion as the cartridge is pressed into the major lumen of the catheter. A selectively operable anti-reflux valve that is attached internally of the proximal end of the catheter portion and is activated when it is desired to prevent escape of body waste through the port device, and deactivated when it is desired to permit passage of fluid through the port device. Retaining structure is connected to the catheter, and is non-surgically, snugly fittable into the stoma, to cause the port device to be self-retaining in a normal use position within a stoma of the user, without the need for special surgery and extraneous, external fixation materials such as tape, belts, and adhesives.

Tape transport servo system and method for a computer tape drive

A tape transport servo system and method that do not make use of tachometers and/or encoders to derive tape velocity and position are provided. The tape transport servo system and method derive velocity and position of the tape from a primary and direct manner and also a secondary or alternative manner, especially when the primary or direct manner cannot be used. The tape transport servo system and method control a tape drive and moves a tape between one reel driven by one motor to another reel driven by another motor. The tape is read by a recording head composed of data readers, data writers and a dedicated set of servo read elements. A position and a velocity of the tape are determined from a primary velocity source when the tape is being read by the head. The position and the velocity of the tape are determined from a secondary velocity source when the tape is not being read by the head. The velocity of the tape is compared to a desired programmed reference velocity for the tape. The velocity of the tape is driven to the desired programmed reference velocity if the velocity is not equal to the desired velocity. The velocity of the tape is controlled by regulating the velocity and the driving currents of the motors. The tape transport servo system comprises a digital signal processor and a servo motor control system. The servo motor control system comprises a servo logic system, sensors, PWM motor drivers, power amplifiers, DACs, counters, computation systems, and a timing-based servo pattern monitoring system.

Touch panel with improved optical performance

Sunlight can damage a conventional touch screen display and cause the display to be quite difficult to read. Furthermore, conventional touch screen displays are easily damaged, and, once damaged, the entire touch screen is replaced. To address these concerns, a touch panel includes anti-reflective coatings on the surfaces of the top plate and the base plate that are open to the air. These coatings substantially reduce reflections and make the touch screen easier to read in direct sunlight. In particular, the anti-reflective coating used on the upper surface of the base plate is dielectric in nature to reduce reflectivity even further. This dielectric coating includes openings to an underlying conductive layer so that an electrical contact is made when a user deflects the top plate into the base plate. Also, the top plate may be detachably coupled to the base plate, advantageously by double stick adhesive tape, so that only the top plate is replaced when damaged. Furthermore, a resistive voltage divider may be fabricated on the base plate. The resistive voltage divider may include a substantially continuous strip of resistive material disposed on the conductive layer of the base plate, and a plurality of conductive traces disposed on the dielectric layer of the base plate and coupled to the resistive material in selected locations.

Daneshvar wound dressing, support units and methods, model jasmine

This invention is related to wound dressings, supports, protection and care in humans and animals. Commonly, adhesives and wraps are used for this purpose. However, the use of adhesive have multiple problems: they are difficult to use with elastic gloves since the adhesive tapes stick to the gloves, cause skin irritations and discomfort on removal, and do not adhere to the skin covered by hairs. Many times the hair must be shaved which is a process of its own. Wound inspections or the exchange of dressing multiplies their problems and prohibits this process. Furthermore, wound wrapping cannot be done by use of adhesive tapes in an effective and convenient manner. Then, of course, is the major issue of dressing a wound with one hand only, that occurs in certain circumstances. It is very important to have a system that allows a person to be able to dress a wound solely with one hand, since the other one may be wounded. These units are extremely helpful in this regard. Lastly, at times the wound dressing should be done as quickly as possible, and obviously speed makes a big difference in manmade or natural disasters. Also in many cases the wound site needs to be protected by means that will prevent objects from touching the skin or the wound site, in order to prevent ulceration, avoid discomfort or simply the mere protection of the wounds. In some other cases, the vascular problems of the wounds need to be addressed for better care. This would, in some cases, need means of squeezing the wound site, and in other cases allow a better drainage of the wounds. The methods and means introduced solves many of these problems. This application introduces new methods and means of dressings that makes the process of wound dressing faster, easier, and applicable with one hand only. It practically eliminates the use of adhesives and / or decreases their use significantly. In this model, a support unit made from a non-stretchable material, commonly in a rectangular or trapezoid shape, is used on the wound to hold the gauze pad or wound dressing in place. This unit uses at least one strap made of a particular stretchable material that allows the strap to attach to the support on a detachable, re-attachable basis to a band of the hook fastener on the surface. Importantly, this attachment can be done in any part of this strap. Also importantly, this support system uses one or two narrow bands made from the same material as the strap, which allows them to wrap around the limb from the opposite side of the strap to attach to the support on a detachable, re-attachable basis. Next, the main strap will attach to the support on detachable, re-attachable basis. In some models the support unit will function as the stabilizer of the system or to make the functions simpler. This main idea is then used to make multiple models for use in different areas. The application has also shown modified versions of these units that function to prevent ulcerations from starting in places such as the heels. In some other models the applicant shows units that guard the wound site and prevent objects from touching the skin or the wound site for avoiding discomfort or mere protection of the wounds. In patients who have vascular problems the models shown here allow the wound in the heels to be squeezed to prevent and reduce tissue swelling. In other cases, the applicant shows means that allow a limb to be elevated for a better drainage. All in all, the applicant tries to introduce units for improving human and animal quality of life.
