Compressed tissue for heart valve leaflets

A process and system for compressing bioprosthetic tissue for use in medical implants. The process involves placing the tissue between two compressive surfaces and applying a force to reduce any nonuniformity of thickness in the tissue, while at the same time reduce the overall thickness. One particularly useful application is the compression of bioprosthetic sheet during the preparation of heart valve leaflets. Bovine pericardium may be compressed to reduce its thickness by about 50%, and then formed into heart valve leaflets. The thinned leaflets have substantially the same absolute strength as those made from uncompressed tissue, and are particular desirable for use in minimally invasive valves which must be compressed into a small profile. The thin tissue enables a reduction in the overall size of the minimally invasive heart valve for delivery. For instance, rolled MIS valves may be reduced in size to as small as 20 mm in diameter. Desirably, a cross-linking step is combined with the compression step to fix the reduced thickness of the tissue. One apparatus may include porous compression substrates through which a cross-linking solution may diffuse so as to perform the fixation and compression simultaneously.

Implantable connector with protected contacts

An implantable connector electrically connects multi-conductor leads to an implantable medical device such as a neurostimulator. The connector is assembled directly into a hermetic feedthrough of the implantable device and utilizes the feedthrough housing as a sustaining structure for connector clamping. The receptacle contacts detachably connect proximal lead contacts to corresponding feedthrough pins, which provide pass-through connections to electronic circuitry contained in a hermetically sealed case. The receptacle contact has resilient contact tines designed to engage a corresponding lead contact in a sliding manner. The receptacle contact is integrated with a contact guard which protects the receptacle contact from inadvertent handling damage. The contact guard is substantially more rigid than the resilient contact to resist deformation. The contact guard protectively shields the receptacle contact tines and prevents unintended contact tine excursion. In one embodiment, the contact guard is pre-attached to the receptacle contact prior to joining to the feedthrough pin. In another embodiment, the contact guard is an integral part of the feedthrough pin. Numerous embodiments with contact preload are provided.

Methods for analyzing and optimizing the performance of a data collection network on an electrical distribution grid

A system and methods for optimizing the performance of communication network utilizing an electrical distribution grid are disclosed. Optimization methods may include archiving historical message data and metrics from transmissions by Remote Hubs received on one or more Substation-to-Edge channels. Trends in the archived metrics over time are later analyzed to determine which combination of transmission variables such as frequency band, modulation method, drive voltage, and transmission time produce the highest message success rates overall. The results of such analysis may be used to provide feedback to the Remote Hubs or reveal necessary repairs to the network. Optimization may also be carried out locally by an individual Remote Hub by estimating the impedance of the transmission medium and adjusting either drive voltage or transmission band.

Extruded polypropylene sheets containing beta spherulites

An improved extruded polypropylene sheet that contains a high level of beta crystallinity and a process for making such sheets are disclosed herein. The polypropylene sheet contains at least one layer of a resinous polymer of propylene and an effective amount of beta spherulites. The beta spherulites in the sheet are produced by the incorporation of a beta nucleating agent in the polymer. The presence of the beta spherulites in the sheet facilitates the process of post-stretching the perforated sheet to produce a uniaxially or biaxially oriented mesh structure, and also broadens the temperature range over which this stretching can be performed. The final mesh has a lower density than a polypropylene mesh without beta spherulites. The perforated beta nucleated sheet also exhibits different stretching characteristics during the orientation steps such that more resinous polymer is drawn out of the node junction region between the machine direction and transverse direction oriented strands and a greater percentage of the web area has a solid polymer structure. This altered stretching behavior results in an oriented web that has higher strength and torsional rigidity characteristics. Thus lighter weight mesh structures which meet all of the physical property requirements for end-use applications, such as reinforcing grids to stabilize concrete and soil in civil engineering and landfill applications, are produced. The lighter weight extruded beta nucleated sheet can also be stretched at higher line speeds, thereby reducing the manufacturing costs.

High mobility plane finfet with equal drive strength

An integrated circuit structure has a buried oxide (BOX) layer above a substrate, and a first-type fin-type field effect transistor (FinFET) and a second-type FinFET above the BOX layer. The second region of the BOX layer includes a seed opening to the substrate. The top of the first-type FinFET and the second-type FinFET are planar with each other. A first region of the BOX layer below the first FinFET fin is thicker above the substrate when compared to a second region of the BOX layer below the second FinFET fin. Also, the second FinFET fin is taller than the first FinFET fin. The height difference between the first fin and the second fin permits the first-type FinFET to have the same drive strength as the second-type FinFET.
