Multi-layer braided structures for occluding vascular defects

ActiveUS20070265656A1Rapid hemostasisHigh metal densityStentsHeart valvesBody organsWire rod
A collapsible medical device and associated methods of occluding an abnormal opening in, for example, a body organ, wherein the medical device is shaped from plural layers of a heat-treatable metal fabric. Each of the fabric layers is formed from a plurality of metal strands and the assembly is heat-treated within a mold in order to substantially set a desired shape of the device. By incorporating plural layers in the thus-formed medical device, the ability of the device to rapidly occlude an abnormal opening in a body organ is significantly improved.

Apparatus and methods for reducing compression bone fractures using high strength ribbed members

InactiveUS20050070911A1Small combined profilePreserving shear strengthInternal osteosythesisDiagnosticsCommon baseBone structure
Devices and methods are provided for treating a bone structure (such as, e.g., reducing a bone fracture, e.g., a vertebral compression fracture, or stabilizing adjacent bone structure, e.g., vertebrae) is provided. The device comprises rigid or semi-rigid members, each of which comprises a common base and a plurality of ribs that extent along the a longitudinal portion of the common base. The device is configured to be placed in a collapsed state by engaging the pluralities of ribs of the members in an interposed arrangement, and configured to be placed in a deployed state by disengaging the pluralities of ribs. The ribs can be any shape, e.g., flutes, that allows opposing ribs to intermesh with one another. In this manner, the device has a relatively small profile when placed in the collapsed state, so that it can be introduced through small openings within the bone structure, while preserving the shear strength of the members during deployment of the device.

Compressed tissue for heart valve leaflets

A process and system for compressing bioprosthetic tissue for use in medical implants. The process involves placing the tissue between two compressive surfaces and applying a force to reduce any nonuniformity of thickness in the tissue, while at the same time reduce the overall thickness. One particularly useful application is the compression of bioprosthetic sheet during the preparation of heart valve leaflets. Bovine pericardium may be compressed to reduce its thickness by about 50%, and then formed into heart valve leaflets. The thinned leaflets have substantially the same absolute strength as those made from uncompressed tissue, and are particular desirable for use in minimally invasive valves which must be compressed into a small profile. The thin tissue enables a reduction in the overall size of the minimally invasive heart valve for delivery. For instance, rolled MIS valves may be reduced in size to as small as 20 mm in diameter. Desirably, a cross-linking step is combined with the compression step to fix the reduced thickness of the tissue. One apparatus may include porous compression substrates through which a cross-linking solution may diffuse so as to perform the fixation and compression simultaneously.

Methods And Apparatus For Treating Aneurysms And Other Vascular Defects

Devices and methods are disclosed for placing a barrier across the neck of a vascular aneurysm, and specifically across the neck of a cerebrovascular aneurysm. The barrier is a stent or neck bridge that completely or partially blocks the flow of blood into the aneurysm and, further, prevents the migration of embolic coils out of the aneurysm and into the parent vessel. The neck bridge or stent of the present invention comprises elements for superior flexibility and stability when placed within the parent vessel. The neck bridge or stent of the present invention is loaded into the catheter by either being rolled tightly and sheathed or stretched to permit loading into the delivery catheter in a small, highly flexible configuration that may be advanced through the cerebrovasculature to pathological aneurysms.

A connector includes a housing, contacts arranged and held in the housing, and a shell attached around the housing. The shell is made from a plate and includes an elongated part extending along a sidewall of the housing and a spring piece adapted to contact a ground contact of a mating connector. The spring piece includes a base part protruded from the elongated part in the direction perpendicular to the direction in which the elongated part extends and bent so that its front end is positioned inward from the sidewall, an intermediate part extended from the front end of the base part in the direction in which the elongated part extends, and a contact tip extended from a front end of the intermediate part in the direction perpendicular to the direction in which the elongated part extends. The intermediate part is spaced away from an inner surface of the sidewall and the contact tip is positioned further inward from the inner surface than the intermediate part and a front end of the contact tip is directed to the side from which the mating connector is inserted. The spring piece of the shell can be made pliant even though the profile of the connector is low. Thus, connector profile reduction can be achieved.

Foldable workstation and shelving system

A foldable workbench provides ergonomic and flat horizontal working surfaces that can be folded vertically to occupy less space when desired. The top shelf may fold downwardly and provide a working space for arms and shoulders. The middle space is generally disposed at waist or hip height to provide arm and shoulder space while also providing an object against which a person might lean in order to provide stability, steady themselves, and work upon objects present on the middle shelf. The lower shelf has room for a person's shins or feet, especially when leaning against the middle shelf. The foldable workstation has a generally thin profile when folded up against a wall or other similar vertical support. The folded panels of the foldable workbench provide protection for tools hanging vertically on a pegboard or the like adjacent the upper folded panel. Similarly, foldable shelves provide horizontal storage or stowage space when needed yet fold vertically to occupy less space when so desired.
