Synchronous collaboration based on peer-to-peer communication

A peer-to-peer protocol is based on the use of global timestamps and client priorities in serializing modifications to a shared workspace of real-time collaboration. The method caters to dynamic clients wherein a client can leave or join an ongoing collaboration session as long as there is always at least one client present / remaining in the collaboration session. The method can support multiple definitions of a modification, including partitioning-based definitions, wherein the method provides full support for locking of partitions, and a full treatment of inter-partition synchronization via a modification definition over multiple partitions. The method is capable of utilizing the many standard methods of creating a global, distributed, synchronized clock for the global timestamps utilized by it. The method is rollback-based for correcting tentative but incorrect serializations, and provides additional backup in terms of checkpoints for additional safety and for the support of lightweight, pervasive clients. The method includes many optimizations for efficiency, and includes a method of switching to and back from distributed server-based serialization for the periods when the network response is better suited to a distributed server than the peer-to-peer protocol.

Layered Virtual File System

A virtual workspace can include an active instance of a layered virtual file system namespace. A layered virtual file system namespace is referred to by the virtual workspace and includes a collection of system data (e.g. layered virtual file system base layer), user data (e.g. layered virtual file system user layer), and virtualized applications (e.g. virtual app layer), metadata and policies (e.g. layered virtual file system layer scope). Because a virtual workspace can include software such as an operating system and one or more applications in addition to user data, a virtual workspace can be aligned with a namespace so that an operating system of the virtual workspace may be located at a “base layer”, one or more applications executing on the operating system may be located at an upper “virtual app” layer, and user data in a virtual workspace may be found at any layer at or above the user layer.

Storage-and transport-independent collaborative document-management system

A document management system enables multiple users to collaboratively contribute to the contents of a document via any suitable medium for transporting and storing documents, including email, shared drives, replicated work spaces and centralized storage systems. A tracking strategy is employed, in lieu of a central repository, that is based upon medium-independent versioning. Each version of a document that is created and saved by a user is given a unique identifier. The versions are submitted to a global service for ratification as the next authoritative version of a document. A submitted version that forms the next step in a linear sequence is ratified as the authoritative version of the document, whereas the version which does not meet this criterion becomes identified as a new document. Support is provided for users who create versions off-line, as well as users who are not subscribers to the system.

Smooth control of an articulated instrument across areas with different work space conditions

An articulated instrument is controllably movable between areas of different work space limits, such as when it is extendable out of and retractable into a guide tube. To avoid abrupt transitions in joint actuations as the joint moves between areas of different work space limits, a controller limits error feedback used to control its movement. To provide smooth joint control as the instrument moves between areas of different work space limits, the controller imposes barrier and ratcheting constraints on each directly actuatable joint of the instrument when the joint is commanded to cross between areas of different work space limits.

Method and optical receiver with easy setup means for use in position measurement systems

Positions can be precisely and accurately fixed instantaneously within a three-dimensional workspace. A system of two or more transmitters each continuously sweep the workspace with two fanned laser beams which are preferably about 90 degrees apart on the rotational axis of the transmitter. A receiving instrument includes, preferably, two light detectors which detect the time at which each fanned laser beam is incident thereon. The light detectors also detect a synchronization pulse from each transmitter that is emitted once per revolution. Beams from different transmitters are differentiated by different rotational speeds and, therefore, different beam incidence cycles. Because three intersecting planes uniquely define a point in three-dimensional space, by detecting at least three of the fan beams from the transmitters, the receiving instrument can calculate its position in the workspace. A Quick Calc setup procedure allows the use to define a desired coordinate system within the workspace.

Holders for prosthetic aortic heart valves

ActiveUS20070244551A1Reduce shapingFacilitate valve implantationHeart valvesVisibilityCommissure
A holder for a flexible leaflet prosthetic aortic heart valve that is less bulky than earlier holders and minimizes obstructions to vision and working space around the valve to facilitate implantation thereof. The holder may have a central hub and three outwardly extending legs that connect directly and exclusively to tips of the commissures of the aortic heart valve for better tactile feedback when parachuting and seating the valve in the annulus. The legs are sized so that they do not overlap the commissure tips and therefore afford a better view of the sewing ring adjacent the commissures. The legs may be narrow in the midsection or split into two rails to increase visibility of the valve leaflets. The hub may be vaulted axially upward relative to the outer ends of the legs to further increase visibility of the valve. A more secure engagement between the central hub and a delivery handle is also provided to ensure the holder / handle connection does not become loose during suture placement through the sewing ring and fewer handle revolutions are required to screw in and unscrew the handle from the holder.

Versioned relational database system with an optimistic constraint model

Techniques for doing optimistic constraint checking in a versioned relational database system. The techniques find a subset of the versions of a table that contain all of the rows that need be checked for violation of a constraint when a given version is modified. When the versions of a table are organized into a directed acyclic graph (DAG), the subset for a given version is the ancestry of the given version, that is, the given version plus the ancestors of the given version in the DAG. Within the ancestry, the set of rows that must be checked is termed the version view. A row that belongs to the set has a primary key that is the latest version of the primary key in the given version's ancestry. The technique may be used for constraints including the referential integrity constraint and the unique key constraint. The metadata used to compute the version view is disclosed, as well as the manner in which the constraint checking techniques interact with the workspaces that provide access to the versions. The workspaces may be organized as a DAG. The manner in which the workspaces are organized determines how changes are propagated in the versioned relational database and thus the versions whose ancestry has to be checked for constraint violations.
