Scheduling data across a shared communication link in a cellular communication system

A system is provided for scheduling data from a network element (101), such as an RNC (101), of a cellular communication system to at least one base station (103) across a shared communication link (105) shared between a plurality of cell sectors (107-111). The apparatus comprises resource allocators (113, 115, 117) each of which schedules data for a single cell sector (107-111). A resource determination processor (119) dynamically determines a resource requirement parameter for at least one of the cell sectors (107-111). The resource determination processor (119) is coupled to a resource assignment processor (121) which dynamically assigns a resource availability of the shared communication link (105) to each of the resource allocators (113, 115, 117) in response to the resource requirement parameter. The resource allocators (113, 115, 117) then schedule data for communication over the shared communication link in response to the resource availability. The invention provides improved utilisation of a shared communication link (105) while allowing independent scheduling by resource allocators associated with a single cell.

System and method for creating a trusted network capable of facilitating secure open network transactions using batch credentials

A system and method for creating a trusted network capable of facilitating secure transactions via an open network using batch credentials, such as batch PKI certificates, is presented. A certificate is bound to a group, or batch, or devices. This certificate is referenced by an activation authority upon processing a request for service by a device. Information regarding the device batch certificate is maintained in a permanent, or escrow, database. A user identity is bound to a device, as a device key is used to sign a user key created on the device in the presence of the user, and a copy of the device key is later used to decrypt the signed user key upon its transmission and receipt.

Dynamic assignment and validation of IP addresses in wireless IP networks

The transmission of unnecessary assignment and validation information to mobile terminals in wireless IP networks is automatically blocked. Assignment and validation information originating with a mobile terminal is discarded by a base station if the information is not directly received by the base station from a mobile terminal. Assignment and validation information originating with an IP address server is broadcast only to those mobile terminals awaiting assignment or validation information using a local broadcast IP address. The validation and assignment is automatically begun once a mobile terminal enters a new subnet by resetting the mobile terminal's IP address to the broadcast address for assignment and validation requests and then broadcasting validation and, if necessary, assignment requests to the wireless IP network.

Method for controlling data transmission from a machine-type communication entity and corresponding entity

A method for controlling data transmission from a machine-type communication (MTC) entity over a radio network in a wireless telecommunications system is described. The method comprises receiving from the radio network a transmission cost parameter representing a cost associated with transmitting data over the radio network; and controlling data transmission from the MTC entity in dependence on the transmission cost parameter. Thus the MTC entity is able to select times and / or manner of data transmissions to reduce the overall cost of using the network. Furthermore, the radio network is able to dynamically manage traffic load by providing a cost incentive for transmitting MTC data when network resources are under utilised and applying a cost penalty for transmissions made while the network is relatively busy.
