A small amplitude with a medium wavelength would create a slow, stately walk like you were trying to keep a teacup on your head and not bob up and down much. Walking with a tiny wavelength and big amplitude means legs taking tiny steps while your head bobs up and down a lot.

Printable Elastic Composite

A composite that contains an elastic film laminated to a meltblown facing is provided. During lamination, apertures and discrete bond sites may be concurrently formed in the elastic film. The discrete bond sites may be located proximate (adjacent or near to) a perimeter defined by corresponding apertures formed by displacement of the film. The location of the bond sites adjacent to or near the apertures may enhance the durability of the meltblown facing by strengthening the area surrounding the apertures. Furthermore, the content of the elastic film and the temperature / pressure of lamination may be selected to that the film possesses a sufficient tack for adhering to the facing at regions other than those fused together by the bonding elements of the patterned roll. Such secondary bonding further stabilizes the meltblown facing and renders it suitable for printing. Further, the film is under tension in the machine direction during lamination. Subsequent to lamination, however, the film is retracted so that the facing retracts toward its original machine direction length, thereby gathering and forming pleats. It has been discovered that these pleats have a relatively small amplitude (height), as well as a substantially uniform frequency across the surface of the facing. Such a small height and increased regularity improves the ability to transfer an ink to “peaks” of the pleats, thereby improving print quality and uniformity.

Rake receiver

A RAKE receiver which is employed in a direct sequence spread spectrum communication system, and which can effectively receive multipath signals. A path searcher measures the amplitude of each path, selects N paths with larger amplitudes in descending order of magnitude, where N is the number of despreaders, and assigns the despreaders to the selected paths to despread the signals of the paths. This assignment of the despreaders to the paths is carried out such that a path with a large amplitude and a path with a small amplitude are assigned to adjacent despreaders and are input to the same pre-detection combiner. The outputs of the despreaders are combined by the pre-detection combiners, and detected by detectors whose outputs are RAKE combined by a post-detection combiner.

Rectifier circuit, semiconductor device using the rectifier circuit, and driving method thereof

An object of the present invention is to provide a rectifier circuit which can suppress loss of power due to parasitic capacitance or parasitic inductance of a semiconductor element. The rectifier circuit matches or mismatches impedance between a circuit of a previous stage and the rectifier circuit in accordance with the amplitude of an input AC voltage. When an AC voltage to be input has a smaller amplitude than a predetermined voltage, impedance is matched and the AC voltage is applied as is to the rectifier circuit. Conversely, when an AC voltage to be input has a larger amplitude than a predetermined voltage, impedance is mismatched, and the amplitude of the AC voltage is decreased by reflection and then the AC voltage is applied to the rectifier circuit.

Wave energy converter with air compression (WECWAC)

InactiveUS7781903B2Simple designSize/volume of the upper chamber to be decreasedEngine componentsMulti-stage pumpsAir compressionSmall amplitude
A wave energy converter with air compression (WECWAC) includes a cylinder and a piston located within the cylinder dividing the cylinder into an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The cylinder is fixedly attached to a spar whose up / down (heave) motion is restrained. The piston is fixedly attached to, and driven by, a float which moves generally in phase with the waves. Under typical wave conditions the piston functions to compress air within the upper chamber on its up stroke and within the lower chamber on its down stroke, i. e., the system is thus double-acting. In still water, the spar and cylinder combination is designed to drift down into the body of water relative to the piston whereby the size / volume of the upper chamber is decreased (while that of the lower chamber is increased). For small amplitude waves the piston continues to compress air in the upper chamber and this asymmetrical compression continues until the waves reach a predetermine level when “double-action” is resumed. Controlling the position of the cylinder relative to the piston enables the WECWAC to automatically regulate its compression ‘stroke’ to suit varying wave conditions. The pressurized air from a WECWAC may be stored and / or processed to drive a turbo-generator or it may be combined with the outputs of other WECWACs to drive a single large and highly efficient turbo-generator.

Short Distance Range Resolution in Pulsed Radar

Pulsed radar detects the presence and range of very short-range objects via small perturbations in phase and / or amplitude of relatively long duration coherently related transmit pulses. In one embodiment, echoes forming a received signal waveform from a sampling baseband radar receiver are processed at audio frequency to look for perturbations of the phase of the time-stretched received radar signal while the radar is still transmitting a long-duration pulse. In a second embodiment, the time-stretched received signal is processed to look for perturbations in the amplitude of the received radar signal. Small amplitude perturbations due to constructive and destructive interference of the transmitted and reflected signals occur in the receiver when objects are very close to the radar if the receiver is not heavily saturated. These same techniques can also be used to achieve highly accurate ranging of long-distance objects and detection of overlapping echoes from multiple objects.

Apparatus and Methods for Non-Invasive Closed Loop Step Testing Using a Tunable Trade-Off Factor

An integrated multivariable predictive controller (MPC) and tester is disclosed. The invention system provides optimal control and step testing of a multivariable dynamic process using a small amplitude step for model identification purposes, without moving too far from optimal control targets. A tunable parameter specifies the trade-off between optimal process operation and minimum movement of process variables, establishing a middle ground between running a MPC on the Minimum Cost setting and the Minimum Move setting. Exploiting this middle ground, embodiments carry out low amplitude step testing near the optimal steady state solution, such that the data is suitable for modeling purposes. The new system decides when the MPC should run in optimization mode and when it can run in constrained step testing mode. The invention system determines when and how big the superimposed step testing signals can be, such that the temporary optimization give-away is constrained to an acceptable range.

Apparatus and method for enhancing dynamic range of charge coupled device-based spectrograph

The present invention is directed to an apparatus, method and software product for enhancing the dynamic range of a CCD sensor without substantially increasing the noise. Initially, the area of a N×M pixel CCD sensor array is subdivided into two regions, a large region having (M−a) pixels in each column for outputting large-amplitude signals with low noise and a smaller region having a pixels in each column for outputting small-amplitude signals with improved dynamic range. At integration time, the CCD is read out one region's rows at a time into the horizontal shift registers by shifting the pixel charges in either a or M−a vertical shifts. The charges in the horizontal shift registers are then shifted out of the horizontal shift registers in N horizontal shifts. Next, the remaining pixels in the region of the CCD are read out into the horizontal shift registers by shifting the pixel charges in the other of a or M−a vertical shifts. Those charges are then shifted out of the horizontal shift registers in N horizontal shifts. In a spectrographic application, the data from the two regions is read out in the form of a large-amplitude channel from the larger region's rows and a small-amplitude channel from the smaller region's rows.

Hydraulic antivibration device

A hydraulic antivibration device is provided that is capable of suppressing generation of strange sounds while ensuring a low dynamic spring characteristic upon inputting of relatively small amplitude vibration and a high damping characteristic upon inputting of relatively large amplitude vibration. To that end, upon inputting of relatively large amplitude vibration, displacement-regulating ribs of one of sandwiching members serve to regulate displacement of an elastic partition membrane pinched by the sandwiching members thus obtaining a high damping characteristic. The displacement-regulating ribs consist of three pieces extending radially and rectilinearly, so that the area of openings of the sandwiching members is made wide enough to ensure more a low dynamic spring characteristic. Displacement-regulating protrusions of the elastic partition membrane are disposed to correspond to the displacement-regulating ribs thereby ensuring to suppress the generation of strange sounds.

Correlation-based background calibration of pipelined converters with reduced power penalty

A device and method for correlation-based background calibration of pipelined converters with a reduced power penalty. A pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) utilizes a random or pseudorandom signal to reduce the quantization error of subconverting stages. Stages within the ADC comprise an injection circuit having a plurality of capacitive branches in parallel. Less than all of the branches can function during a given clock cycle of the ADC. This allows a subconverting stage within the ADC to be accurately trimmed before operation using a large amplitude signal. At the same time, the capability to inject smaller amplitude random or pseudorandom signals into the subconverting stage during operation is maintained, saving valuable dynamic range and power. The various capacitive branches are cycled through either randomly or in sequence such that the quantizer manifests the same average gain error over time for which the quantizer was initially trimmed.

De-tuning in wireless power reception

Exemplary embodiments are directed to wireless power transfer. A receiver (820) with a receive antenna (L2) couples with near field radiation in a coupling mode region. The receiver generates an RF signal at a resonant frequency responsive to the near field radiation. A de-tuning circuit (860) generates a variable impedance responsive to a control signal to modify the RF signal to a smaller amplitude or to a different resonant frequency. A rectifier (840) converts the modified RF signal to a DC signal. A comparator (850) creates a feedback loop by generating the control signal responsive to comparing the DC signal to a reference voltage (Vref). The de-tuning circuit may operate in digital mode or in linear mode with the feedback. An impedance element (R1) may be coupled to the de-tuning circuit to generate a voltage proportional to a current through the de-tuning circuit. The proportional voltage is rectified to a receive signal (1430) with information sent from a transmitter.
