Contrast agent imaging with destruction pulses in diagnostic medical ultrasound

The invention is directed to improvements in diagnostic medical ultrasound contrast agent imaging. In a preferred embodiment, high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) destruction pulses are fired at a rate higher than necessary for receiving returning echoes. Pulse parameters can also be changed between the plurality of contrast agent-destroying pulses. Other preferred embodiments of the invention are directed to simultaneous transmission of multiple beams of destruction pulses. Destruction frames that consist of a plurality of destruction pulses can be triggered and swept over the entire region of tissue being imaged and at a variety of focal depths from the transmitter. The destruction frames are fired at some time triggered from a timer or some fixed part of a physiological signal, such as an ECG signal. Other preferred embodiments of the invention are directed to continuous low power imaging pulses alternating with destruction pulses triggered at a fixed point of a physiological signal, and a comparison of the received signals from imaging pulses fired before and after the destruction pulses. Alternatively, destruction pulses are triggered at a fixed point on a physiological signal different from the fixed point of a physiological signal used to trigger imaging pulses. In another embodiment, triggered destruction frames are used to enable a comparison of imaging frames in order to determine physiological functions, such as perfusion of blood in cardiac tissue. Finally, in another embodiment, destruction pulses are combined with subharmonic imaging.

Universal Multiple Aperture Medical Ultrasound Probe

A Multiple Aperture Ultrasound Imaging (MAUI) probe or transducer is uniquely capable of simultaneous imaging of a region of interest from separate physical apertures. Construction of probes can vary by medical application. That is, a general radiology probe can contain multiple transducers that maintain separate physical points of contact with the patient's skin, allowing multiple physical apertures. A cardiac probe may contain only two transmitters and receivers where the probe fits simultaneously between two or more intracostal spaces. An intracavity version of the probe can space transmit and receive transducers along the length of the wand, while an intravenous version can allow transducers to be located on the distal length the catheter and separated by mere millimeters. Algorithms can solve for variations in tissue speed of sound, thus allowing the probe apparatus to be used virtually anywhere in or on the body.

The surface is given by the formula: SOR=Vol. V / VREG. The system can be applied to the assessment of the surface of regurgitation of the mitral jet.

A medical ultrasonic imaging system transmits a set of two or more substantially identical transmit pulses into a tissue containing a contrast agent. The associated received pulses are filtered with a broadband filter that passes both the fundamental and at least one harmonic component of the echoes. The filtered received pulses are then applied to a clutter filter that suppresses harmonic and fundamental responses from slowly moving and stationary tissue, while clearly showing contrast agent response due to the loss of correlation effect. The disclosed system includes other signal paths for generating conventional B-mode images as well as combined images that include both components from the contrast-specific image as well as components from the B-mode image. An improved user interface allows the user to switch among these three images. Preferably the transmitter generates transmitted pulses having two or more spatially distinct focus zones, thereby improving the uniformity of contrast agent imaging over the imaged region.

Method and apparatus for medical ultrasound navigation user interface

In one embodiment, an ultrasound system is provided that includes a probe having a 2D array of transducers for acquiring ultrasound information along a plurality of scan lines through an object in real time. The scan lines are arranged to define volumetric data corresponding to a volume of interest (VOI) in a subject or patient. One such VOI may include the human heart or some portion of the human heart. The system includes a beamformer configured with scan parameter values that define the scan lines. An image buffer stores multiple data volumes acquired over time that are successively retrieved and processed by a display processor. The display processor accesses the data volumes stored in the image buffer successively to control generation of at least one of 2D and 3D renderings based on display parameters, wherein the display processor obtains from the image buffer a first data volume defined based on first scan parameter values, while the probe acquires ultrasound information for a second data volume that is entered into the image buffer. The second data volume is defined based on second scan parameter values. A navigation view presents in real time the renderings generated by the display processor with their corresponding 3D orientation. A navigator is provided that controls the display of the navigation view in real time such that, as the user adjusts a display parameter value to change a view plane, images presented in the navigation view are updated to reflect the view plane. A user interface is provided for adjusting the scan and display parameter values.

The systems and methods described herein allow for the application of a bias voltage to one or more transducers implemented within a medical ultrasound imaging system. Bias circuitry is placed within an imaging device and used to apply a DC bias to one or more transducers requiring a DC bias to operate. The one or more transducers can be fabricated in a semiconductor manufacturing process and integrated with the bias circuitry on a common semiconductor substrate. Also provided is a method for operating the one or more transducers and bias circuitry using a communication channel having two signal lines.
