Method for selecting an air interface using an access list on a multi-mode wireless device

Application-specific access lists are provided for a multimode mobile wireless device. The multimode mobile device has an access list for each wireless technology. Typically, these technology specific access lists are standard for each technology, and are provided by a service provider or the manufacturer of the multimode mobile device. For each application the multimode wireless device is a likely to operate, an application-specific access list is generated. The application-specific access list ranks the wireless technologies according to its relative desirability for the application. In this way, when the multimode mobile device request an application, the application-specific access list may be used to efficiently acquire a network preferred for that particular application. The application-specific access lists may be updated from time to time as applications are added or changed, as technology specific access lists are updated, or as geographic location changes.

Multifocal imaging systems and method

In the systems and methods of the present invention a multifocal multiphoton imaging system has a signal to noise ratio (SNR) that is reduced by over an order of magnitude at imaging depth equal to twice the mean free path scattering length of the specimen. An MMM system based on an area detector such as a multianode photomultiplier tube (MAPMT) that is optimized for high-speed tissue imaging. The specimen is raster-scanned with an array of excitation light beams. The emission photons from the array of excitation foci are collected simultaneously by a MAPMT and the signals from each anode are detected using high sensitivity, low noise single photon counting circuits. An image is formed by the temporal encoding of the integrated signal with a raster scanning pattern. A deconvolution procedure taking account of the spatial distribution and the raster temporal encoding of collected photons can be used to improve decay coefficient. We demonstrate MAPMT-based MMM can provide significantly better contrast than CCD-based existing systems.

Method and Apparatus for Passively Monitoring Online Video Viewing and Viewer Behavior

Various user behaviors are passively monitored and recorded when a user / viewer interacts with a network video player, e.g. a web video player, while watching an online video clip. For one embodiment, a data collection agent (DCA) is loaded to the player and / or to a web page that displays the video clip. The DCA passively collects detailed viewing and behavior information without requiring any specific input or actions on the part of the user. Indications of user preferences are inferred by user actions leading up to viewing the video, while viewing the video, and just after and still related to viewing the video. The DCA periodically sends this information to a central server where it is stored in a central database and where it is used to determine preference similarities among different users. Recorded user preference information may also be used to rate a video itself.

Value synthesis infrastructure and ontological analysis system

The invention shows explicitly how direct and honest communication utilizing a distributed computing network, shared content and services, and a focus on social network dynamics and situational context can directly create experiential and realized value for all participants around the globe. Contributors (20), having instructional content to share (22) pertaining to the functional utilization of generically named goods, essentially become knowledge workers and are rewarded (26) during specific instances when commercial entity Sponsors (60), who have been granted rights through bidding in an auction (64), utilize this content to un-intrusively market their branded goods to interested and receptive Consumers (10), by having their brand names acknowledged as a valuable component of the original content. The content can also be federated with real-time calculations of statistical price information (37) and specialized data services (101) to further increase the experiential value. The Sponsors (60) participating in these niche groups can then be granted access-rights to analyze the developing value network ontology and the ongoing flow of quality information (34) among the participants in the value network.

Method for distributed acquisition of data from computer-based network data sources

A method for facilitating efficient automated acquisition of data from computer-based network data sources, such as Internet websites, by means of one or more data aggregation servers and a distributed network of one or more client computers (each operated by and / or on behalf of one or more end users), that does not trigger "trespass on chattels" protection, violate copyright protection of database compilations of non-copyright data or allow data sources to easily detect automated data acquisition. In a specific embodiment, each user runs a java applet within their Internet browser that frequently polls a server connected to a database storing the user's preferences. Based on the user's preferences and other data stored in the database, the server generates requests (each to be issued by the client machine to a particular website) and tells the user's applet to issue those requests. Response(s) (or a processed version of those responses) returned to the server may be used by the client machine and / or returned to the server where they may be parsed, stored in the database, made available to the user (and, potentially, other users) and may trigger the server to generate follow-on requests. This method has many potential uses, including, but certainly not limited to, the aggregation of real estate data from numerous websites for homebuyers.

Optical in-vivo monitoring systems

Systems for highly efficient, in-vivo collection of modulated infra-red light are presented. Specifically, these devices are arranged in an important format with a view to integration with a wristwatch or other wearable device. An optical aperture of large surface area, specially distributed in an annular ring, receives radiation having been modulated in a tissue test site by blood flow. Radiation received about the annular aperture is redirected by a blazed grating or similar optical element at near perpendicular angles, into a radially distributed, condensing light pipe array and further toward a common axis. Radiation converges on the axis, thus increasing the energy density of the collected signal, before it is further directed via a conic element to a detector such as a photodiode. In some versions, these highly specialized optical paths may be formed into a single element of inexpensive plastic or other rigid substrate.
