Method and apparatus for archiving and visualizing digital images

A computer based, digital image management system that visually presents an entire archive in a manner that facilitates easy, non-textual, searching for specific images. The system consists of two main elements; a file management methodology, and a graphical user interface. The file management method utilizes reference files that contain multiple properties (metadata) relating to each image file. Image files are grouped into a multiplicity of collections based on user-defined associations of the properties. The graphical user interface visually represents the groups of image files on 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional graphic metaphors. In addition, the graphical interface uses multiple display variables such as icons, mnemonics, size, movement, color, and luminance to signify relationships between groups, and / or communicate key properties of individual or groups of images.

Document management system and method

A document management system / method allowing coordinated synchronized modifications and secure, scalable, multi-level, and controlled access to Data Content and / or Documents (DCDS) over a computer network between multiple Content Owners and / or Reviewers (CORS) is disclosed. The system / method is configured to allow any number of CORS to share DCDS using a Content Collaboration Platform (CCP) while retaining complete DCDS integrity / retrieval control using a hierarchical Access Rights and Control List (ARCL) to prevent CORS from uncoordinated DCDS modification and prohibiting local maintenance of DCDS copies after the expiration of a CORS Data Access Session (DAS). Upon termination of a CORS DAS, the system synchronizes modifications to the DCDS and coordinates control information among various CORS to ensure proper return of the DCDS back to its original CORS owner and associated CORS storage location.

Clustered file management for network resources

Methods for operating a network as a clustered file system is disclosed. The methods involve client load rebalancing, distributed Input and Output (I / O) and resource load rebalancing. Client load rebalancing refers to the ability of a client enabled with processes in accordance with the current invention to remap a path through a plurality of nodes to a resource. Distributed I / O refers to the methods on the network which provide concurrent input / output through a plurality of nodes to resources. Resource rebalancing includes remapping of pathways between nodes, e.g. servers, and resources, e.g. volumes / file systems. The network includes client nodes, server nodes and resources. Each of the resources couples to at least two of the server nodes. The method for operating comprising the acts of: redirecting an I / O request for a resource from a first server node coupled to the resource to a second server node coupled to the resource; and splitting the I / O request at the second server node into an access portion and a data transfer portion and passing the access portion to a corresponding administrative server node for the resource, and completing at the second server nodes subsequent to receipt of an access grant from the corresponding administrative server node a data transfer for the resource. In an alternate embodiment of the invention the methods may additionally include the acts of: detecting a change in an availability of the server nodes; and rebalancing the network by applying a load balancing function to the network to re-assign each of the available resources to a corresponding available administrative server node responsive to the detecting act.

System and method for creating and posting media lists for purposes of subsequent playback

A method and apparatus for creating and posting media is provided. For example, the invention allows a user to quickly create, signal process, encode, and transfer media files to a server for storage, posting, distribution, and retrieval. Thus, media such as audio, video, display, photo, spreadsheet, Web Clips, and HTML pages can be combined into a media file for uploading to a server and accessed from listings posted at web sites. In accordance with embodiments, a user downloads and installs a plug-in at the user's client computer. The user then registers and logs onto the server to perform various tasks. For example, the user can create a combined audio and photo media file at the client computer, in accordance with server based control parameters received from the system server. The plug-in then allows the user to perform digital signal processing and encoding of the media file at the client computer. After the file is encoded, it may be uploaded to a server for storage, posting, distribution, and retrieval. A file management system provides copies and listings of the file to other servers and web sites as permitted. Thus, other user having access to the database or web site lists via other client computers may select the file for retrieval. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, an information management system provides file and file list rankings based upon selection or click through of files and file listings.

System and method for record retention date in a write once read many storage system

This invention provides a specified retention date within a data set that is locked against deletion or modification within a WORM storage implementation. This retention date scheme does not utilize any proprietary application program interfaces (APIs) or protocols, but rather, employs native functionality within conventional file (or other data containers, data sets or block-based logical unit numbers) properties available in commonly used operating systems. In an illustrative embodiment, the retention date / time is calculated by querying the file's last-modified time prior to commit, adding the retention period to this value and thereby deriving a retention date after which the file can be released from WORM. Prior to commit, the computed retention date is stored in the file's “last access time” property / attribute field, or another metadata field that remains permanently associated with the file and that, in being used for retention date, does not interfere with file management in a WORM state. Since this field is not utilized in a WORM context, it can be adapted to store this date. Once stored, the retention date in this field is locked against modification. Where extension (never reduction) of a retention period is desired, the last access time field be updated, wherein the new retention period is added to the existing last access time value to derive a new, later retention date for the file. Upon expiry of the retention date, the system allows deletion of the expired WORM file / data set.

System for managing telecommunications services through use of customized profile management codes

A service management system based on customized profile management codes. In an advanced intelligent network, a central control point includes a set of logic that defines profile management codes customized for individual subscribers or groups of subscribers. When the central control point receives a profile management code for a particular subscriber, for instance, the central control point may interpret the profile management code altogether differently than it does for the same code from another subscriber. For instance, the logic in a single central control point may indicate for one subscriber that the code "11" means to "activate call forwarding," and the logic may indicate for another subscriber that the code "11" means to "bill the call to a specified third party account."

Integration of a database into file management software for protecting, tracking, and retrieving data

A data protection system that integrates a database with Windows Explorer in the Microsoft Windows 9X and NT Environments that mimics the Windows Explorer user interface, enabling the user to apply already known use paradigms. The data protection system appears as an extension to Windows Explorer and visibly appears as a folder item called the data vault. The data vault is a virtual disk that represents the underlying database. The database creates records and stores information about files backed up to removable secondary storage medium. Files may be backed up manually or automatically. A schedule can be set up for automatic protection of selected files and file types. The database can be searched to find files for restoration purposes without having to load secondary storage medium. Once a file or files are selected, the data protection system indicates which labeled removable secondary storage medium must be loaded for retrieval.

A system and related techniques provide a seamless, peer-to-peer file synchronization capability for sharing files, folders, directories or other stored content between machines. According to embodiments of the invention in one regard, a sync engine or other file management logic may be integrated into the operating system or other resources of a user's desktop, laptop, network-enabled cellular device or other computer, client, machine or other hardware. The sync engine may accept user designations of files, folders, directories or other contents which they wish to share, sync or roam between two or more selected machines, on an automatically consistent basis. The sync engine or other control logic may maintain a file system log to record the state of files which have been designated for sharing, to indicate for example whether a transmission of the file has been made, to which target machine or machines it has been transmitted, and other variables regarding the state of file or other content. According to embodiments of the invention in one regard, the sync engine may apply version management logic when files located on a target or destination machine, may, for example, reflect newer or more complete content than the file which is designated for roaming to that machine, or other under conditions. A user may therefore readily and with a comparative minimum of configuration effort select and effectuate the sharing of a set of frequently used or otherwise desired files to an arbitrary set of machines which they own or use, without a need to invoke a remote server or other control or storage to back up and synchronize that content.
