Systems and Methods for Isolating On-Screen Textual Data

The systems and methods of the client agent describe herein provides a solution to obtaining, recognizing and taking an action on text displayed by an application that is performed in a non-intrusive and application agnostic manner. In response to detecting idle activity of a cursor on the screen, the client agent captures a portion of the screen relative to the position of the cursor. The portion of the screen may include a textual element having text, such as a telephone number or other contact information. The client agent calculates a desired or predetermined scanning area based on the default fonts and screen resolution as well as the cursor position. The client agent performs optical character recognition on the captured image to determine any recognized text. By performing pattern matching on the recognized text, the client agent determines if the text has a format or content matching a desired pattern, such as phone number. In response to determining the recognized text corresponds to a desired pattern, the client agent displays a user interface element on the screen near the recognized text. The user interface element may be displayed as an overlay or superimposed to the textual element such that it seamlessly appears integrated with the application. The user interface element is selectable to take an action associated with the recognized text.

Automatically scrolling handwritten input user interface for personal digital assistants and the like

A handheld device 100 such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or the like, a handwritten input user interface (HIUI), a method of interfacing handwritten text and a program product therefor. A lower portion of a touch enabled display is designated as a handwriting input area 104. Action icons 106, 108, 110, 112 and 114 are disposed at a right side of the handwriting user interface 102. Recognized text is displayed on the screen in a text display area located between a file management tool bar 116 and the handwritten input area 104. A scroll bar 118 is disposed at the right side of the display 112. As text is continuously entered each individual word may be recognized, and inserted into the end of the text stream. A word separator 120 may demarcate or bracket individual words in a continuous input stream. A secondary list of potential recognition candidates may be available for display in a box 128 and offered for substitution for or in lieu of the recognized word. Handwritten text may be continuously entered and displayed in the handwriting input area 104 as digital ink, the input point staying approximately fixed with the ink display automatically scrolling. The input area behaves as a "treadmill" or "ticker tape" that is moving from right to left, thereby giving the illusion of a continuous writing space. The speed of the "treadmill" automatically adapts to writing speed. The device 100 may include a communications function and, in particular the device may include an antenna 122 for wireless communication. Individual function switches, buttons and other controls are disposed about the device.

Head-mounted text display system and method for the hearing impaired

The head-mounted text display system for the hearing impaired is a speech-to-text system, in which spoken words are converted into a visual textual display and displayed to the user in passages containing a selected number of words. The system includes a head-mounted visual display, such as eyeglass-type dual liquid crystal displays or the like, and a controller. The controller includes an audio receiver, such as a microphone or the like, for receiving spoken language and converting the spoken language into electrical signals. The controller further includes a speech-to-text module for converting the electrical signals representative of the spoken language to a textual data signal representative of individual words. A transmitter associated with the controller transmits the textual data signal to a receiver associated with the head-mounted display. The textual data is then displayed to the user in passages containing a selected number of individual words.

System and method for textually displaying an original flight plan and a modified flight plan simultaneously

A navigational system includes a display device and logic that simultaneously presents a textual display of an original flight plan and a modified flight plan on the display device. The textual display includes a textlist of waypoints that are on the original flight plan and the modified flight plan and performance data for common waypoints that are on both the original flight plan and the modified flight plan, as well as for new waypoints that are added to the modified flight plan. The performance data for each common waypoint includes performance data for the waypoint on the original flight plan and for the waypoint on the modified flight plan. The system may further include an interface device that allows an operator to change the modified flight plan. The logic updates the textlist of waypoints on the textual display when the modified flight plan is changed and updates the performance data on the textual display for common waypoints when the modified flight plan is changed. The logic may also designate on the textual display waypoints to be removed, which correspond to waypoints that are on the original flight plan but not on the modified flight plan, and, when the modified flight plan is activated to become a new flight plan, the logic removes from the textual display the waypoints that are designated to be removed.

Network speech-to-text conversion and store

A telecommunications system (100) includes network access devices (104) that couple user devices (102) to a telecommunications network (106). The user devices (102) include at least voice and preferably text display and text generation capability. A voicemail server (114) is coupled to the telecommunications network. The voicemail server (114) is also coupled to an application server (116). Selectively, speech traveling through the telecommunications network (100) from user devices (102) is converted into text, stored, and forwarded to a user device as a text message. The text message is for example a facsimile transmission, an e-mail, or a SMS message. The selectivity is based on a stored attribute, current status of the user device, attributes of the sending device and the like. Text can even be converted into speech as an option. Or, stored speech associated with a text message can be retrieved based on the text message.

Interactive television system with partial character set generator

An interactive television system includes a partial font generator (38) which generates a character font file of only those fonts used by a given application program for text display. The partial font file contains the language character fonts utilized by the application program, but less than the complete character set of the language. Thus, the partial font file thus requires less time or bandwidth to transmit in the allotted transmit intervals. The partial font file may be generated by a manual process, or by an automated analysis of the fonts used by an application program.
