Systems and methods for obtaining authentication marks at a point of sale

Systems and methods are described for using a point-of-sale device at a check-cashing entity to obtain information about one or more authenticating marks, such as watermarks, bar codes, background patterns, color schemes, insignia, security validation numbers, or the like, from a second-party check or other negotiable instrument presented for a proposed check-cashing transaction. In various embodiments, the authenticating mark information may be compared to stored information about expected configurations of authenticating marks as part of a risk assessment of the check. In various embodiments, the point-of-sale device transmits authenticating mark information to a check authorization system. The point-of-sale device may receive an accept / decline recommendation for the transaction from the check authorization system, based at least in part on the obtained authenticating mark information. The point-of-sale device may display a message about the recommendation to an operator of the device.

A system and method for acquiring, processing, and comparing an image with a stored image to determine if a match exists. In particular, the system refines the image data associated with an object based on pre-stored color values, such as flesh tone color. The system includes a storage element for storing flesh tone colors of a plurality of people, and a defining stage for localizing a region of interest in the image. A combination stage combines the unrefined region of interest with one or more pre-stored flesh tone colors to refine the region of interest based on color. This flesh tone color matching ensures that at least a portion of the image corresponding to the unrefined-region of interest having flesh tone color is incorporated into the refined region of interest. Hence, the system can localize the head, based on the flesh tone color of the skin of the face in a rapid manner. According to one practice, the refined region of interest is smaller than or about equal to the unrefined region of interest. This method and apparatus are particularly adapted to consumer devices such as hand-held devices and cars.

Colored suture construction

A colored suture includes an elongate woven braid of filaments including one or more ends made of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The suture also includes second and third ends which can be colorable or dyeable before or after incorporation into the elongate woven braid. This invention provides surgeons with improved recognition of suture ends in surgery by construction of a bi-colored co-braid with at least two ends of different color schemes or patterns braided into a UHMWPE construction. One of the colored ends runs continuously from one end of the suture to the other end. The other colored end can be colored only on one half of the end. This provides a suture with two distinguishable ends, while still maintaining a continuous line of color along the length of the suture.

System and method for identifying information

An apparatus and method for identifying digital communications, or analog communications which have been converted to digital, having content considered to be abnormal, undesirable or otherwise inappropriate. The use of specific words are analyzed in the context in which they were used. Digital communications may be monitored and continuously updated to reflect the likelihood that the originator of the message or message stream is engaged in inappropriate communications. Monitoring may be directed to online chat room conversations, email messages or messages posted to an online bulletin board. The level of digital conversation may be correlated to a color scheme indicative of the normality of the conversation. This color scheme may then be used to determine if the ability of a particular user to continue to provide messages should be limited. In this manner, a single individual performing a monitoring function may easily monitor a plurality of text-based conversations. Various embodiments are described.

Method and apparatus for automatically producing spreadsheet-based models

A designer builds a condensed, generic form of a spreadsheet which is a definition file. This can be designed in Microsoft Excel, following a set of guidelines, or using a high level symbolic language. If required, HTML files, can be produced directly from the Excel definition file to enable the user to, input parameters using a web browser. A user defines the various parameters that are to be used for their particular spreadsheet and the software of the present invention expands the template's rows and columns according to those requirements, working out the effect on the formulae and linked cells as this takes place. Behind the scenes a set of information tables are built, either in memory or in a file, based on the information in the definition file. These tables are processed in a structured way to build the spreadsheet formulae, reference other tables and build any objects required to operate the model. Formulae are copied and / or rebuilt depending on the circumstances in which they will be used. In addition, the data input areas of the spreadsheet can be separated onto another worksheet to facilitate usability. Reports and charts can be adjusted to suit the data. Several templates or definitions can be combined into one spreadsheet and other objects, e.g. drop down lists and scrollbars, can be added to enhance usability. VBA code can also be included to perform complex operations not normally available in a spreadsheet. Definition libraries that describe, or contain a copy of, a part of the model can be added seamlessly, for example, a bar chart with a particular color scheme or a complicated calculating function. The definition library can also contain VBA code, which can become part of the finished model and can add to its functionality.

A database stores information related to the relationships between the network components (e.g., VPNs, PEs, CEs, VRFs, IFs, etc.), and a management software package (MSP) has access to the database. When a fault occurs, the MSP, based on collected information and information in the database, determines the impacted network components. Other features include classifying the seriousness of the network's faults and representing different faults by a color scheme.

Method, system, ane computer-readable medium for applying a global formatting scheme to a chart in an electronic document

A method, system, and computer-readable medium are provided for applying a global formatting scheme to a chart in an electronic document. According to a system, a chart application program receives a selection of a chart object in the electronic document and a document theme. The document theme includes a combination of formatting schemes including a color scheme, a font scheme, and a style matrix. The chart application program then automatically applies the selected document theme to the selected chart object in the electronic document. In applying the selected document theme to the selected chart object, the chart application program automatically updates a number of properties of the chart object including color, font, line, effect, and fill. The chart application further enables a user to modify a selected chart style in the document theme by modifying the elements related to the selected chart style and saving the chart type of the selected chart object and the modified chart style as a custom chart template to a file. When a user opens the file, the chart application automatically updates an existing chart template gallery to include the custom chart template.

Paint color matching and coordinating system

A paint color matching and coordinating system comprises an interface for receiving an input reference color, a processor capable of reading a memory, a memory including (1) instructions readable by the processor and (2) a database of architectural paint colors spanning all or most of the known color space, and a display generator. In use, the interface of the system receives an input reference color from a user. The processor selects a “reference paint color” from the database, the reference paint color being visually closer, with respect to color space, to the input reference color than any other paint color in the database. According to the invention, color space is divided into a plurality of fixed, generally equally sized, non-overlapping, contiguous portions, each color space portion being defined as the space of all colors within a band of hues within color space. The processor selects five sets of paint colors—one set from each of the color space portions that include the five hues that comprise the “five-way harmony” of the reference paint color. The processor may also select a sixth set of paint colors from the color space portion that includes the hue of the reference paint color. Finally, the processor directs the display generator to create a display of color samples of the reference paint color and of the first through sixth sets of paint colors.
