Register checkpointing mechanism for multithreading

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for using a register checkpointing mechanism to resolve multithreading mis-speculations. Valid architectural state is recovered and execution is rolled back. Some embodiments include memory to store checkpoint data. Multiple thread units concurrently execute threads. They execute a checkpoint mask instruction to initialize memory to store active checkpoint data including register contents and a checkpoint mask indicating the validity of stored register contents. As register contents change, threads execute checkpoint write instructions to store register contents and update the checkpoint mask. Threads also execute a recovery function instruction to store a pointer to a checkpoint recovery function, and in response to mis-speculation among the threads, branch to the checkpoint recovery function. Threads then execute one or more checkpoint read instructions to copy data from a valid checkpoint storage area into the registers necessary to recover a valid architectural state, from which execution may resume.

Apparatus and method in a cached raid controller utilizing a solid state backup device for improving data availability time

An apparatus for reducing data unavailability time after a loss of main power in a storage controller is described. The controller backs up its volatile memory containing posted-write data to a non-volatile memory upon detecting a loss of main power. The controller continues to provide battery power to the volatile memory to sustain the posted-write data. If the battery is able to supply power to the volatile memory until main power is restored, the controller foregoes restoring the posted-write data to the volatile memory from the non-volatile memory. By not incurring the restore time, which may be substantial if the volatile memory is large since read rates from volatile memories are typically slow, the data unavailability time is reduced. The selective restore feature is user-disableable and also includes a brown-out timer for allowing a user to specify how long to battery-power the volatile memory if the feature is enabled.

Alarm-based backup and restoration for a semiconductor storage device

Embodiments of the present invention provide backup and restoration functions for a storage device of a PCI-Express (PCI-e) type that support a low-speed data processing speed for a host. Specifically, embodiments of this invention provide backup and restoration functions for one or more (i.e., a set of) semiconductor storage devices (SSDs). In general, the present invention provides an alarm unit and a secondary power supply coupled to a backup controller. The backup controller is coupled to a backup storage device. When a primary power supply is deactivated (e.g., fails), an alarm unit and the secondary power supply is activated. In response to this activation, the backup controller will backup any data stored on any SSDs of the storage system (as well as any data stored in main memory of the storage system or in main memory of any host server connected thereto). When the primary power supply is reactivated, the secondary power supply (and the alarm unit) is deactivated, and all data backed up is restored to its original source.

Nested Recovery Scope Management For Stateless Recovery Agents

Nested recovery scope management systems and methods for a multiple process computer system having a dynamic multiple address space server are disclosed. Stateless recovery agents are employed, under the control of a supervisory program called Recovery Director, during initialization or restart of servers to restore recoverable data in response to identified failures or other abnormal termination. The Director controls the recovery of protected resources in a systematic manner. The Director is initialized when a first address space of a first server is started. Then, as each instance of a recoverable component is initialized, the component registers with the Director by providing a reference to a stateless recovery agent that can later perform recovery functions for it if needed. As part of the registration, a token representing the current failure scope of the registration is generated and provided to the recoverable component by the Director. Work identifiers representing recoverable operations can be generated from or associated with this token by the recoverable component and may be put in hardened storage. Upon initialization of a new server region, and also upon a failure or abnormal termination, the Director groups multiple instances of the same recoverable component together, formulates an iterative recovery plan, and determines the scope of recovery by examining its hardened data for failure scopes involving a recoverable component that may need to perform some recovery operation. As such recoverable components are identified, the Director references the associated recovery agent, provides it with appropriate token as to the recovery scope. The recovery agent is then allowed to carry out those recoveries, including any recovery scopes nested within.

Timing recovery in presence of optical impairments and optimization of equalization based on timing recovery moment strengths

The present disclosure provides timing recovery in optical systems in the presence of chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and polarization dependent loss (PDL) and to optimization of equalization settings based upon timing recovery moment strengths. A stable timing point may be determined in the presence of PMD and PDL impairments, even when the direct estimate of timing becomes unreliable. This determination may be performed entirely in the digital domain providing precise, predictable performance. Also, the present invention utilizes a monotonic relationship between the timing metric and CD setting error to provide directed search in setting the CD equalizer thereby reducing significantly the overall search effort in optimizing CD equalizer settings. This utilizes computations already performed by the transceiver for timing recovery function yielding a computational advantage over competing methods.

Adaptive blind start-up receiver architecture with fractional baud rate sampling for full-duplex multi-level PAM systems

This invention presents a novel receiver architecture for full-duplex multi-level PAM systems. The receiver employs an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) that has a sample rate flexibly specified as (Ns+1) / Ns baud rate where Ns is an integer equal or greater than 1. A fractional-spaced echo canceller is used to cancel the echo at the ADC output. The use of a fractional sampling rate higher than the baud rate also enables the timing recovery function be implemented in the digital domain and hence eliminates the need of using the complex analog phase selection circuit. The receiver is also capable of fast, blind start-up by use of a decision feedback equalizer with unity main tap and a soft level slicer. The timing phase can be optimally located using a derivative channel estimator. Once the “eye-open” condition is achieved, the channel equalization is switched to the use of linear equalizer coupled with an error feedback equalizer to alleviate the error propagation problem associated with the decision feedback equalizer.
