1133 results about "Heartbeat" patented technology

In computer science, a heartbeat is a periodic signal generated by hardware or software to indicate normal operation or to synchronize other parts of a computer system. Usually a heartbeat is sent between machines at a regular interval in the order of seconds. If the endpoint does not receive a heartbeat for a time—usually a few heartbeat intervals—the machine that should have sent the heartbeat is assumed to have failed.

Associating heartbeat data with access to shared resources of a computer system

ActiveUS8560747B1Maintained efficiently and reliablyUnauthorized memory use protectionProgram controlVirtualizationTimestamp
A method, system and program code for implementing distributed locks to be maintained through the use of on disk heartbeats. An instance of a node need only maintain a single heartbeat for all locks associated with the node and all of its processes. The node updates its heartbeat by accessing common storage, either virtual or physical, and updating a timestamp value in its heartbeat within a predetermined time interval, otherwise the heartbeat becomes stale. Expired heartbeats can be cleared or broken to allow redistribution of any locks associated therewith. The inventive technique may be implemented in a traditional computer environment or in a fully or partially virtualized environment and requires no use of an IP network or a separate network based lock manager.

Method for synchronizing use of dual and solo locking for two competing processors responsive to membership changes

To satisfy host requests, two competing processors self-manage access to a shared resource. Each processor maintains a lock table listing that processor's access state regarding the shared resource. Each processor repeatedly sends the other processor a state announcement message representing the processor's state. These include birth cry, heartbeat, or death knell messages. Whenever certain join-entry conditions apply to a processor, the processor performs a JOIN operation to evaluate and attempt to synchronize its lock table with the other processor's lock table. If data is needed from the other processor's lock table, the processor changes its state announcement message to birth cry. If the processor successfully synchronizes its lock table with the other processor, the JOIN operation dictates DUAL mode for that processor. If the synchronization attempt fails, SOLO results. When JOIN completes, the processor operates in its chosen mode. In DUAL, the processor's state announcement message is heartbeat, signifying healthy operation. In DUAL, the processors cooperatively establish temporary single-processor locks on the shared resource to satisfy host requests. In SOLO, a processor sets its state announcement message to death knell, advising the other processor not to access the shared resource. Also in SOLO, the processor attempts to "acquire" the shared resource by storing a predetermined identifier thereon. In SOLO, a processor refrains from accessing the shared resource unless it has acquired it.

FMCW broadband life detection radar breathing and heartbeat signal extraction algorithm

The present invention provides an FMCW broadband life detection radar breathing and heartbeat signal extraction algorithm. Compared with the prior art, the algorithm has the advantages that breathing and heartbeat signals of multiple persons can be obtained simultaneously, the boundaries and energy of reconstructed breathing signals can be very well kept by using Coiflets wavelets compared with traditional frequency-domain filtering, especially processing conducted on short-time signals is obvious, higher harmonics of the breathing signals are filtered out by adopting a double-coefficient based LMS self-adaptive filtering algorithm, and the self-adaptive filtering algorithm does not need additional reference signals. Due to the fact that a degressive search step size coefficient is adopted in the algorithm, the heartbeat signals can be better retained while breathing signal harmonics are filtered out, the heartbeat signals can be rapidly converged by selecting the appropriate search step size coefficient and adopting the double-coefficient based LMS self-adaptive filtering algorithm, and smaller stable imbalance is kept in longer time, so that finally separated heartbeat signals are more accurate in frequency component within a long time.

Suicide among well-mannered cluster nodes experiencing heartbeat failure

Methods for re-configuring a cluster computer system of multiple or more nodes when the cluster experiences communications failure. First and second nodes of the cluster have respective channel controllers. A SCSI channel and the controllers communicatively connect the multiple nodes. When a node becomes aware of a possible communications failure, the node attempts to determine the authenticity the failure and responds according to the determined authenticity. According to one method, a first node detects heartbeat node-to-node communications failure on the channel and then tests a physical drive on the channel. If the testing is successful, the node kills the other node. If the testing is unsuccessful, the first node commits suicide. In one embodiment, the coupling includes multiple channels communicatively coupling the first and second nodes and the first node selecting one of the channels for node-to-node communications. In this environment, choosing a physical drive involves testing node-to-node communications on another of the channels if no physical drive is online on the channel (and terminating the re-configuring method). If a drive is available, the first node uses the first physical drive online on the channel for testing. In another method, the second node initially detects communications failure and communicates that by attempting to negotiate wih the first node for a new configuration of the computer system. The first node tests a physical drive in response and negotiates with the second node if the testing was successful. If the testing was unsuccessful, the first node commits suicide.

According to the method disclosed by the invention, the host machine is used for periodically querying address information of the slave machines and identifying new equipment in a network by comparing the current address information of the slave machine with the effective addressing range so that each piece of new equipment has an effective address, and thus the problem of inconvenience caused in dynamic addition and deletion of nodes because the R-485 bus adopts a master-slave type communication method is solved.

User authentication through video analysis

A user of a computing device can be authenticated using image information captured by at least one camera of the computing device. In addition to analyzing the image information using a facial recognition algorithm, for example, variations in color of a portion of the captured image information corresponding to a user's face can be monitored over a period of time. Detecting failure of layer 2 service using broadcast messages

Some embodiments provide a method for detecting a failure of a layer 2 (L2) bump-in-the-wire service at a device. In some embodiments, the device sends heartbeat signals to a second device connected to L2 service nodes in order to detect failure of the L2 service (e.g., a failure of all the service nodes). In some embodiments, the heartbeat signals are unidirectional heartbeat signals (e.g., a unidirectional bidirectional-forwarding-detection (BFD) session) sent from each device to the other. The heartbeat signals, in some embodiments, use a broadcast MAC address in order to reach the current active L2 service node in the case of a failover (i.e., an active service node failing and a standby service node becoming the new active service node). The unidirectional heartbeat signals are also used, in some embodiments, to decrease the time between a failover and data messages being forwarded to the new active service node.
