Glass-based micropositioning systems and methods

Glass-based micropositioning systems and methods are disclosed. The micropositioning systems and methods utilize microbumps (40) formed in a glass substrate (12 or 100). The microbumps are formed by subjecting a portion of the glass substrate to localized heating, which results in local rapid expansion of glass where the heat was applied. The height and shape of the microbumps depend on the type of glass substrate and the amount and form of heat delivered to the substrate. The microbumps allow for active or passive micropositioning of optical elements, including planar waveguides and optical fibers. Optical assemblies formed using microbump micropositioners are also disclosed.

Electric baseboard heater control

In order to provide an electric heat system that is quieter than those of the prior art, a switching circuit is incorporated into the controls for the heating system which provides for the heating elements of the electric heater to be kept at a more constant temperature than those of the prior art. The switching circuit regulates the output power to the degree desired while not inducing sharp changes in temperature of the coils of the electric heater and thus reduces the degree of rapid expansion and contraction of the coils and the enclosure for the heater. This in turn reduces the amount of mechanical noise produced by the electric heater while also reducing wear and tear on the heating element, the heater enclosure and objects near to the heater.

Active-avoidance-based routing in a wireless ad hoc network

Conventional multi-hop routing of ad hoc wireless networks involves considerations such as costs, connection quality, distances, and numbers of hops. A conventional wireless routing algorithm may fail when a destructive event takes place and is rapidly expanding in area, as the route discoveries may perpetually lag behind the rate of expansion of the destructive area. As typically embodied, the present invention's wireless routing algorithm detects a destructive event early, assumes rapid expansion of the destruction area, establishes “subnets” of nodes, and predetermines one or more routes that circumvent the rapidly expanding destruction area by exiting from and returning to the subnet in which the destructive event originates. Typical inventive practice avails itself of the architectural character of the physical setting for the wireless network, for instance by establishing subnets corresponding to compartments formed by wall-like structures (e.g., shipboard bulkheads), which represent natural barriers to expansion of a destruction area.

Micro-channel boiling heat transfer system and method based on vapor-liquid multiphase fluid staggered division

The invention discloses an enhanced heat transfer system and method, and belongs to the field of micro evaporators. The enhanced heat transfer system is composed of an upper cover plate, a periodic staggered micro-channel array plate and a simulation heat source. A liquid working medium enters the staggered micro-channel array and is heated to generate gas-liquid phase change, the gas-liquid two-phase working medium is periodically divided in the staggered micro-channel array, and meanwhile, five types of enhanced heat transfer modes are realized: (1) the gas-liquid contact area is increased through gas-phase division, so that latent heat exchange is increased; (2) superheated liquid energy is released from more gas-liquid interfaces, so that the interface expansion rate is reduced, and flow and thermal instability caused by rapid expansion of the interface are fundamentally inhibited; (3) bubble segmentation delays heat transfer deterioration caused by the fact that a large-area steam film covers a heating surface; (4) a bubble tail turbulent flow area is increased, and convection heat exchange is enhanced; and (5) periodical separation and re-development of the heat boundary layer of the near-wall area occur through periodical division of the liquid phase, the heat exchange resistance of the near-wall area is remarkable, and convection heat exchange is improved.
