A corpectomy or vertebrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of the vertebral body (Latin: corpus vertebrae, hence the name corpectomy), usually as a way to decompress the spinal cord and nerves. Corpectomy is often performed in association with some form of discectomy.

Interbody fusion system with intervertebral implant retention assembly

The present disclosure is directed towards a biomechanical implant and anterior, lateral or posterior instrumentation construct. The construct may be of unitary or modular construction, whereby a single molded construction can form the entire assembly, in which case the through holes may be adapted to receive a metallic insert for screw fixation; or alternatively be of a modular construction wherein the anterior / lateral instrumentation and intervertebral spacer are designed for removable locking engagement, one with the other, for insertion by the surgeon as a unitary construct. A unique feature of the construct resides within the instrumentation construction, whereby a single opening formed therein permits two bone screws, or the like fastener device, to be positioned within both the superior and inferior vertebral bodies surrounding the spacer implant, or, for example in the case of a corpectomy or diskectomy with cage insertion, wherein two screws can be fixed within a single vertebral body through a single through hole, and wherein the bone screws are constructed and arranged to cooperate with the retention plate so as to provide locking engagement, one to the other, with the retention plate, upon final fixation thereof. Screw retention elements of alternative shape, based upon the choice of vertical or horizontal orientation, based upon an opened figure eight design, are provided for insertion in a groove formed in the borehole of the instrumentation plate which allows insertion of each fixation element but will prevent a loosened fixation element from falling out of the plate.

Formed in place corpectomy device

An inflatable corpectomy device includes a balloon, which defines a cavity for receiving a hardenable media. The device can be inserted in an un-inflated form into a space formerly occupied by a diseased or damaged vertebrae bone. When inflated with a hardenable material, the device expands and fills the space. Various bone anchors or plates can be used in combination with the inflatable device to bridge the space and stabilize the spine while the device hardens.

Device for Stabilizing a Vertebral Joint and Method for Anterior Insertion Thereof

A prosthetic device can be used as a prosthesis following a discectomy or a corpectomy. The prosthetic device includes two endplates with staggered motion limiting members. The device can be configured to allow six degrees of motion when comparing one endplate relative to the other. The endplates can be configured to fix the joint by changing the body held within the device and by adding a locking plate and fasteners. A method teaches how to insert a device to an intervertebral space via an anterior incision.

Ratcheting expandable corpectomy/vertebrectomy cage

Expandable medical implants for supporting bone structures may include a first member and a second member. The second member may be configured to receive the first member and may be moveable along the longitudinal axis relative to the first member. One of the first and second members may include a plurality of teeth and the other of the first and second members may include at least one tooth. At least a portion of one of the first and second main bodies may be elastically deformable to selectively engage and disengage the at least one tooth and the plurality of teeth. At least one tooth and the plurality of teeth may be shaped to deform the elastically deformable portion when both increasing and when decreasing the overall implant height by moving the second member relative to the first member along the longitudinal axis.

Composite metal and bone orthopedic fixation devices

Composite orthopedic devices that facilitate spine stabilization, such as: bone screws, rods, plates, interbodies, and corpectomy cages are disclosed. They are designed to provide both strength and load carrying capabilities, while increasing bio-integration of the devices with the surrounding bone tissue. They are constructed of composite layers of allograft and / or autograft bone and a structural material, such as titanium alloy or carbon / graphite fiber composite. Cannulations within the device are loaded with a mixture of stem cells, particles of allograft and / or autograft bone, and bone growth factors, such as BMP-2. The cannulations are connected to the surface of the device via multiple fenestrations that provide pathways to supply the bone / stem cell mixture to the surface, allowing living bone tissue to grow and insure bio-integration. The devices can also have radiofrequency (RF) stimulation implantation within the structure of the implanted device, capable of responding to external RF stimulation of enhanced bone growth.

Expandable corpectomy device

The instant invention is a longitudinally adjustable corpectomy device which fits within the intervertebral distracted channel. A ratchet mechanism allows for an extendable member to adjust to a longer length to accommodate a distracted channel. The ratchet type mechanism allows the members to move in a unidirectional movement to prevent the two members from contracting once expanded.

Expandable corpectomy cage

A corpectomy cage is provided with upper and lower telescoping members which move axially between extended and retracted positions. A fixed length sleeve fits over the telescoping members. The sleeve is load bearing to support axial loads on the cage from vertebral bodies. The sleeve also prevents the telescoping members from retracting and encloses an internal cavity within the cage for packing bone fusion material.

Dislocation prevention type non-fusion artificial cervical vertebra and intervertebral disc system

The invention discloses a dislocation prevention type non-fusion artificial cervical vertebra and intervertebral disc system comprising a vertebra body component and two end plate components, wherein the end plate components are connected to the upper end and the lower end of the vertebra body component respectively through a dome joint structure and L-type dislocation prevention structures on the front side and the rear side. End plate fixing screws are arranged on the two end plate components respectively. After corpectomy, the system can play a role in supporting at once, the motion function of the normal cervical vertebra is replaced through own interbody connecting parts, stress of the cervical vertebra can be dispersed in the motion process, internal stress of adjacent segment intervertebral discs and zygapophyseal joints can be reduced, and degeneration, which is caused by fusion, of the adjacent segments can be effectively prevented. In addition, stable bony fusion can be achieved through bone grafting and a hydroxyapatite coating on the surface of the system. The operation difficulty is small, trauma is small, and the system is convenient to popularize. Due to the fact that the dislocation prevention positions of the system are arranged, long-period stability can be achieved after the operation.
