Electrosurgical generator with adaptive power control

An electrosurgical generator has an output power control system that causes the impedance of tissue to rise and fall in a cyclic pattern until the tissue is desiccated. The advantage of the power control system is that thermal spread and charring are reduced. In addition, the power control system offers improved performance for electrosurgical vessel sealing and tissue welding. The output power is applied cyclically by a control system with tissue impedance feedback. The impedance of the tissue follows the cyclic pattern of the output power several times, depending on the state of the tissue, until the tissue becomes fully desiccated. High power is applied to cause the tissue to reach a high impedance, and then the power is reduced to allow the impedance to fall. Thermal energy is allowed to dissipate during the low power cycle. The control system is adaptive to tissue in the sense that output power is modulated in response to the impedance of the tissue.

Method and system for improved reliability in storage devices

A method of preventing data loss in a data storage system includes supplying write data to a high speed volatile write buffer and supplying electrical power from an energy storage device upon detection of a primary power loss event. The backup electrical power is supplied to the write buffer and nonvolatile cache. Under backup power, the write data is transferred into the nonvolatile cache and the backup power is removed. Upon regaining main power, a data presence indication triggers a transfer of the write data from the nonvolatile cache to the long term storage media. The method may be implemented for a system to protect it from inadvertent power losses or it may implemented in a system where the long term storage device is power cycled to save power. The energy storage device is not necessarily needed in the power cycled system unless power failure protection is also desired.

Procedure for addressing remotely-located radio frequency components of a control system

A wireless lighting control system has a plurality of control devices, some of which may be remotely-located. Each of the control devices is operable to be coupled to a source of power and to be assigned a unique device address. To assign a unique address to the control devices that are remotely-located, power is cycled to those control devices, i.e., by interrupting and restoring power to the control devices. The control device then transmits wirelessly a signal uniquely identifying the control device within a predetermined amount of time after the cycling of power. A list of unaddressed control devices that have recently been power cycled is generated. Each of the control devices on the list is then assigned and transmitted a unique device address.

Buoyant airbarge and spinnaker sail combinations for generating electric power from wind

Systems for generating electric power from wind are disclosed, which use buoyant aircraft and spinnaker sails to generate very large pulling forces, which will be used to drive electric generators. The buoyant aircraft, referred to as “airbarges”, will have large, wide, and flat shapes which combine various traits of kites, manta rays, and “flying wing” aircraft. They can be flown “nose up” during the pulling stage of each power cycle, and “nose down” during retrieval. Spinnaker sails are comparable to horizontal parachutes, with tethering systems that will enable them to be pulled back to a starting location in a “luffing flag” or “closed umbrella” configuration. Because of various factors, spinnaker sails can generate much greater power output and operating efficiency than 3-blade wind turbines. “Webbing sails” made from interwoven straps also are disclosed, which can be used even in extremely high winds.
