Intra-aortic renal delivery catheter

InactiveUS7063679B2Significant mixingIncreased taper pitchGuide needlesStentsPuncture WoundBoth kidneys
A renal flow system and method direct fluid into renal arteries from a location within the aorta. A renal flow assembly has a tapered tube that is adjustable between a radially collapsed condition for delivery to the location through a delivery sheath and a radially expanded condition that divides aortic flow into exterior and interior paths. The tube's wall is made from a sheet of flexible material, such as PTFE or ePTFE. Two, nickel-titanium rings radially support the tube's ends and are connected by a longitudinal spine support. A fluid delivery assembly injects drug to flow along the exterior flow path and the tubular wall directs the agent into the renal artery ostium. The tube's taper has localized shape for circumferential agent mixing to infuse both kidneys' renals. The flow assembly allows an interventional device, e.g. delivery catheter, to advance across the location while directing blood into the renals and perfusing downstream circulation. The renal flow assembly and distal device are used within a common guide sheath through a single puncture wound. Vasodilators, antioxidants, or diuretics are delivered to the kidneys to treat / prevent RCN, CHF, or ARF.

Systems and methods for reversibly blocking nerve activity

Systems and methods for blocking nerve impulses use an implanted electrode located on or around a nerve. A specific waveform is used that causes the nerve membrane to become incapable of transmitting an action potential. The membrane is only affected underneath the electrode, and the effect is immediately and completely reversible. The waveform has a low amplitude and can be charge balanced, with a high likelihood of being safe to the nerve for chronic conditions. It is possible to selectively block larger (motor) nerve fibers within a mixed nerve, while allowing sensory information to travel through unaffected nerve fibers.

System and method for beamforming using a microphone array

The ability to combine multiple audio signals captured from the microphones in a microphone array is frequently used in beamforming systems. Typically, beamforming involves processing the output audio signals of the microphone array in such a way as to make the microphone array act as a highly directional microphone. In other words, beamforming provides a “listening beam” which points to a particular sound source while often filtering out other sounds. A “generic beamformer,” as described herein automatically designs a set of beams (i.e., beamforming) that cover a desired angular space range within a prescribed search area. Beam design is a function of microphone geometry and operational characteristics, and also of noise models of the environment around the microphone array. One advantage of the generic beamformer is that it is applicable to any microphone array geometry and microphone type.

Method and apparatus for image processing

There is provided a method for processing a digital image for noise suppression and sharpness enhancement, comprising the steps of performing a sharpness enhancing process on original image data to create sharpness enhanced image data; performing a smoothing process on the original image data to create smoothed image data; subtracting the smoothed image data from the sharpness enhanced image data to create first edge / grain composite image data; performing an edge detection to determine an edge intensity data; using the edge intensity data to determine grainy fluctuation compressing coefficient data for compressing amplitude of an grainy fluctuation component in the grainy region; multiplying the first edge / grain composite image data by the grainy fluctuation compressing coefficient data to compress only the grainy fluctuation component in the grainy region, and to thereby create second edge / grain composite image data; and adding the second edge / grain composite image data to the smoothed image data to thereby create an processed image. There is also provided an image processing apparatus for implementing the above method. An improvement is thus achieved in both graininess and sharpness without causing any artificiality and oddities due to "blurry graininess".

Phased array metamaterial antenna system

An efficient, low-loss, low sidelobe, high dynamic range phased-array radar antenna system is disclosed that uses metamaterials, which are manmade composite materials having a negative index of refraction, to create a biconcave lens architecture (instead of the aforementioned biconvex lens) for focusing the microwaves transmitted by the antenna. Accordingly, the sidelobes of the antenna are reduced. Attenuation across microstrip transmission lines may be reduced by using low loss transmission lines that are suspended above a ground plane a predetermined distance in a way such they are not in contact with a solid substrate. By suspending the microstrip transmission lines in this manner, dielectric signal loss is reduced significantly, thus resulting in a less-attenuated signal at its destination.

Demagnetizing a head in a disk drive by increasing the frequency of an AC write signal while maintaining the write current amplitude

A disk drive is disclosed which demagnetizes the head after a write operation. Write circuitry applies a write signal to the head in order to write data to a selected data sector during a write operation, wherein the write signal comprises a predetermined write current amplitude. Control circuitry demagnetizes the head at the end of the write operation by maintaining the write current amplitude while increasing a frequency of an AC write signal applied to the head over a predetermined demagnetization interval, wherein increasing the frequency of the AC write signal decreases an amplitude of the AC write signal when observed at the head.

Semiconductor device, and display device and electronic device utilizing the same

A semiconductor device having a normal function means is provided, in which the amplitude of an output signal is prevented from being decreased even when a digital circuit using transistors having one conductivity is employed. By turning OFF a diode-connected transistor 101, the gate terminal of a first transistor 102 is brought into a floating state. At this time, the first transistor 102 is ON and its gate-source voltage is stored in a capacitor. Then, when a potential at the source terminal of the first transistor 102 is increased, a potential at the gate terminal of the first transistor 102 is increased as well by bootstrap effect. As a result, the amplitude of an output signal is prevented from being decreased.

Display apparatus

A display apparatus, that includes current driving type luminescent elements, has a driving system that takes the conduction types of TFTs to control the emission of the luminescent elements into consideration. In order to reduce driving voltage and improve display quality simultaneously, the arrangement is provided such that if the second TFT (30) which performs the "on-off" function of the current for the luminescent element (40) is of an N channel type, the potential of the common power supply line ("com") is lowered below the potential of the opposite electrode ("op") of the luminescent element (40) to obtain a higher gate voltage ("Vgcur"). In this case, if the first TFT (20) connected to the gate of the second TFT (30) is of a P channel type, when using the potential of the potential-holding electrode ("st") at the "on" state as a reference, potentials of the scanning signal ("Sgate") at the lower potential and the common power supply line ("com") are rendered of the same polarities with respect to this potential of the potential-holding electrode ("st"). Therefore, the potential of the image signal ("data") to turn "on" can be shifted within the range of the driving voltage in the display apparatus (1) in the direction to reduce resistances at the "on" states of the first TFT (20) and the second TFT (30) to reduce driving voltage and improve display quality.

Methods, systems and devices for desufflating a lung area

Methods, systems and devices are described for temporarily or permanently evacuating stagnating air from a diseased lung area, typically for the purpose of treating COPD. Evacuation is accomplished by displacing the stagnant CO2-rich air with a readily diffusible gas using a transluminal indwelling catheter specially configured to remain anchored in the targeted area for long term treatment without supervision. Appropriate elevated positive gas pressure in the targeted area is then regulated via the catheter and a pneumatic control unit to force under positive pressure effusion of the diffusible gas out of the area into neighboring areas while inhibiting infusion of other gases thus effecting a gradual gas volume decrease and deflation of the targeted area.

Seismic acquisition method and system

The maximum output of a seismic source array may be reduced by activating the individual seismic sources within these seismic source array in a pattern that is extended in time rather than by the presently employed conventional simultaneous activation of a large number of individual seismic sources. Methods are disclosed which take data shot with patterned sources and may use a sparse inversion method to create data with the about same image quality as that of conventional sources. In this manner the output of the maximum impulse of a seismic source array may be reduced by an amplitude factor of about 10 in the examples shown here, corresponding to a reduction of about 20 dB while maintaining virtually the same seismic image quality. The disclosed methods may be used in combination with any simultaneous sourcing technique. In addition, the disclosed methods may be used with a plurality of source arrays.

Method and apparatus for improving the intelligibility of digitally compressed speech

A system for processing a speech signal to enhance signal intelligibility identifies portions of the speech signal that include sounds that typically present intelligibility problems and modifies those portions in an appropriate manner. First, the speech signal is divided into a plurality of time-based frames. Each of the frames is then analyzed to determine a sound type associated with the frame. Selected frames are then modified based on the sound type associated with the frame or with surrounding frames. For example, the amplitude of frames determined to include unvoiced plosive sounds may be boosted as these sounds are known to be important to intelligibility and are typically harder to hear than other sounds in normal speech. In a similar manner, the amplitudes of frames preceding such unvoiced plosive sounds can be reduced to better accentuate the plosive. Such techniques will make these sounds easier to distinguish upon subsequent playback.
