A rapid method for calculating a local eye vector in a fixed point lighting unit. For a given triangle primitive which is to be projected into a given viewport in screen space coordinates, the local eye vector corresponds to a given eye position and a first vertex of the given triangle primitive. (A different local eye vector is calculated for each vertex of the given triangle primitive). The method first comprises generating a view vector matrix which corresponds to the given eye position and corner coordinates of the given viewport, where the corner coordinates are expressed in screen space coordinates. The view vector matrix is usable to map screen space coordinates to an eye vector space which corresponds to the given viewport. The method next includes receiving a first set of coordinates (in screen space) which correspond to the first vertex. The first set of coordinates are then scaled to a numeric range which is representable by the fixed point lighting unit. Next, the first set of coordinates are transformed using the view vector matrix, which produces a non-normalized local eye vector within the eye vector space for the given viewport. The non-normalized local eye vector is normalized to form a normalized local eye vector. The normalized local eye vector is then usable to perform subsequent lighting computations such as computation of specular reflection values for infinite light sources, producing more realistic lighting effects than if an infinite eye vector were used. These more realistic lighting effects do not come at decreased performance, however, as the local eye vector may be calculated rapidly using this method.

A 3-D graphics accelerator for performing lighting operations using operands within a given fixed point numeric range. The 3-D graphics accelerator includes a first computational unit which is configured to compute a value of an attenuation factor usable for performing said lighting operation for local lights. The attenuation factor is represented in floating point format. The first computational unit is also configured to represent the attenuation factor in an intermediate format including a first intermediate value (a scaled attenuation factor value within the given fixed point numeric range), and a second intermediate value (a shift count usable to convert the scaled attenuation factor value back to the original attenuation factor value). The 3-D graphics accelerator further includes a lighting unit coupled to said first computational unit. The first computational unit is further configured to convey the intermediate representation of the attenuation factor to the lighting unit. The lighting unit performs lighting calculations in fixed point, using operands within the given numeric range (such as the scaled attenuation factors). The lighting unit generates intermediate color values as a result of these lighting calculations. The lighting unit then uses the shift count value to shift the intermediate color values by an appropriate amount, thereby generating a final color value. The lighting unit clamps said final color value to a predetermined maximum color value in response to said final color value exceeding said predetermined maximum color value.

The present invention provides an improved graphical user interface (GUI) component for presenting mixed mode inputs. A GUI component disclosed as a mixed mode input box according to the present invention permits easier selection within the GUI component of an input among mixed mode inputs such as numeric inputs within a numeric range and combined textual and numeric inputs. Pull-down menu is activated to allow the user to select among mixed mode inputs. When the user selects a numeric value within a numeric range only as the selected input, scroll buttons are activated and used by the user to increment or decrement the numeric value to a desired, selected input value. When the selected input is any other input, such as a combined textual and numeric input, scroll buttons are de-activated. Display of mixed mode input box occupies a relatively small display area and only requires a relatively small amount of code to provide such a layout. Such a small amount of code is able to be stored in a small amount of memory space.

This extended overdrive table reduces the size of any interpolation errors when straddling crossover points to acceptable levels without requiring storing or using any crossover data. In addition, since the saturation regions are used to hold the new data, no additional storage requirements are introduced. The numeric range of the extended table is increased and it is therefore supposed that the bit depth of the table entries is increased, but the table can be resealed to retain the original bit depth with insignificant loss of accuracy. Also, the new data incorporated into the saturation regions allows run time calculation of the pixel attained at the end of the frame time that is needed as the start of the pixel for the next cycle.

The present invention provides a method, computer program product and data processing apparatus for reducing memory usage of an object oriented program. The object oriented program comprises at least one class definition used to create objects, each class definition providing at least one function that can be run in respect of objects created from that class definition, and identifying a number of storage items to be provided in memory for each object to store data values associated with that object. For each class definition, the method is performed prior to any objects being created from that class definition, and is performed in respect of at least a subset of the storage items identified by that class definition. The method involves determining an original size associated with each storage item, and analysing at least the class definition to identify any numeric ranges associated with the storage items. For each storage item for which a numeric range is identified, it is determined if the original size can be reduced whilst still supporting the numeric range, and if so a modified size less than the original size is allocated to that storage item. Thereafter, the class definition is altered having regard to any storage element that has been allocated a modified size, whereafter when objects are created from that altered class definition, a significant reduction in memory usage is obtained.
