Bending beam load cell with torque sensitivity compensation

A bending beam load cell can be compensated for side-to-side off center load sensitivity by simple electrical adjustments if a pair of shear sensing strain gages are bonded to each bending beam midway between axial strain gages used to measure bending strains. The shear sensing strain gages measure torque on the load cell, and are incorporated in bridge circuits that make it possible to vary the amount of torque sensitivity correction by changing the value of a trimming resistor. The bridge circuits also include circuit components for compensation of front-to-back off center load error and for zero adjustment. Four strain gages on each bending beam can be part of a single composite strain gage element, so the shear sensing strain gages do not add any cost to the load cell. Such a load cell can also be hermetically sealed before any compensation of offset load errors is done.

Load limiting structure for vehicle occupant restraint system

A new and useful load-limiting device for a vehicle occupant restraint is provided. The load-limiting device comprises a longitudinal, load-limiting member connected between the vehicle occupant restraint and an anchor point such as a vehicle seat or a structural part of the vehicle. The load-limiting member is configured to deform plastically to dissipate forces applied to the load-limiting member by the vehicle occupant during a crash. Moreover, according to the preferred embodiments, the design of the load-limiting member provides a new and useful form of plastic deformation to dissipate forces applied to the load-limiting member by the vehicle occupant restraint. Specifically, in one embodiment the load-limiting member comprises a deformable strip with a pattern of perforations disposed in staggered rows extending transverse to the strip. In another embodiment the load-limiting member comprises a deformable tube with a pattern of perforations disposed in staggered rings extending about the central axis of the tube. The configuration of the load-limiting member provides a plurality of beam like segments that deform progressively, and with bending beam characteristics, to dissipate forces applied to the load-limiting member by the vehicle occupant during a crash.

The beams can be heated by methods including the passage of an electrical current through them. The buckling direction of an initially straight beam upon heating and expansion is controlled by incorporating one or more directional constraints attached to the substrate and proximal to the mid-point of the beam. In the event that the beam initially buckles in an undesired direction, deformation of the beam induced by contact with a directional constraint generates an opposing force to re-direct the buckling beam into the desired direction. The displacement and force generated by the movement of the buckling beam can be harnessed to perform useful work, such as closing contacts in an electrical switch.
