130 results about "Asymmetric digital subscriber line" patented technology

Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is a type of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. ADSL differs from the less common symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL). In ADSL, bandwidth and bit rate are said to be asymmetric, meaning greater toward the customer premises (downstream) than the reverse (upstream). Providers usually market ADSL as a service for consumers for Internet access for primarily downloading content from the Internet, but not serving content accessed by others.

Method and system for provisioning digital subscriber line facilities

A method and system include receiving at a provisioning server a service order to implement an asynchronous digital subscriber line (DSL) service from a service order entry system. The provisioning server identifies and assigns multiple facilities needed to implement the service order, including a remote terminal connectable to a terminal of a DSL subscriber and an optical concentrator device connectable to the remote terminal. The provisioning server determines an interface corresponding to each of the facilities, which are configured, based on interface specific instructions from the provisioning server, to implement the service order.

Receiver for discrete multitone modulated signals having window function

A receiver for improving the performance of conventional Discrete Multitone Modulation (DMT) based Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) modems, in the presence of noise and / or interference. A demodulator having an FFT followed by a single-tap-per-bin frequency-domain equalizer is augmented by an additional data-path utilizing windowing or pulse shaping. Windowing is done independently for each symbol over the orthogonality interval and efficiently in the time domain or frequency domain. A decision feedback equalizer at the output of the windowed data-path cancels inter-bin-interference created by windowing.

Apparatus for and method of providing and measuring data throughput to and from a packet data network

A digital subscriber link data network incorporates a throughput test server (TTS) to provide fault identification, isolation, and verification of DSL service availability and data rates. An asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) terminal unit—remote (ATU-R) is connected to an ADSL terminal unit—central office (ATU-C) over a conventional copper loop or equivalent. Data connectivity via a packet switch provides access to high speed data networks, TTS connectivity and interfaces to service providers (SPS). Upon receiving a test request, a technician routes a customer to the TTS. The customer uses a web browser to access the TTS and download executable testing software, e.g., a JAVA applet. The applet causes test messages to be sent to and received from the TTS and computes upstream and downstream data rates that is displayed to the customer together with whether the measured data rates are consistent with a specified class of service.

Method and system for turbo encoding in ADSL

In a coding system for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) communications, a method of encoding a sequence of information bits is provided comprising the steps of dividing the information bits into encoding bits and parallel bits; encoding the encoding bits to produce encoded bits; mapping the encoded bits and the parallel bits into first and second pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals; and generating a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal from these first and second PAM signals. This method overcomes the decoder complexity that would otherwise be required due to the large QAM constellations involved for ADSL communications.

Asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) resource planning

A system and methods to optimize the resource planning of ADSL services is provided. In an illustrative implementation, a network management system (NMS) communicates with an ADSL network to provision resources for participating users. The provisioning process yields a permanent virtual circuit (PVC). Included in the provisioning process is the creation and management of configuration variables, such as, the virtual path identifier (VPI) and the virtual circuit identifier (VCI). The VPI / VCI combination uniquely identifies each PVC. If the provisioning process is aborted or fails, it may be reanimated by the NMS using the VPI / VCI combination. In this implementation, the VPI may be set to a constant value and the VCI value calculated using ADSL configuration values (e.g. the physical connection position on a first, second, third, etc. ADSL network component.) The deterministic nature of the VPI and VCI configuration variables assist the NMS to track and optimize available resources.

Approach for processing data received from a communications channel to reduce noise power and optimize impulse response length to reduce inter-symbol interference and inter-channel interference

An approach for processing data received from a communications channel that minimizes noise power and optimizes impulse response length to reduce interference, such as from inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI), is disclosed. For example, finite impulse response (FIR) filtering may be used with FIR coefficients that are determined by optimizing a function of the impulse response length and the noise power. The impulse response length is optimized based on the communications channel transfer function to reduce interference. The noise power is minimized based on the noise covariance as determined using the total noise power density. The approach accounts for noise from a variety of interference sources besides ISI and ICI. The result is a superior equalizer for use in communications receivers employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing or discrete multitone modulation in communications protocols employing Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, G.Lite and Very High Bit Rate DSL.

Method and system for discarding and regenerating acknowledgment packets in ADSL communications

A method and system for discarding and regenerating transmission control protocol (TCP) acknowledgment packets (ACKs) transmitted over an asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) to increase the data transmission rate. When an incoming ACK is received at a first intermediate node located at one end of the ADSL link, the intermediate node determines whether a prior ACK from the same connection / flow (TCP receiver) is presently stored in a queue awaiting transmission. If a prior ACK packet is not presently stored in the queue, the incoming ACK packet is stored in the queue. However, if there is a prior ACK packet in the queue, the information contained in the incoming ACK packet is stored in a per-connection state table and the incoming ACK packet is discarded. When the prior ACK packet is ready to be transmitted to a second intermediate node via the ADSL link, the information contained in the per-connection state table regarding the discarded incoming ACK is copied into the prior ACK. Upon receiving the prior ACK, the second intermediate node regenerates the discarded ACK based on the information contained in the prior ACK.
