In a business network environment, each workstation or information access point (IAP) has installed thereon a quality of service (QoS) module to monitor the IAP's performance. The QoS module declares exceptions when it perceives that one or more of a predetermined plurality of functions or conditions of the computer has entered into a state indicative of degraded performance. At the time that an exception is declared, a snapshot is taken of the software applications running on the IAP, the amount of resources that they are using, and presence or absence of the user. As used in calculating a QoS index representative of the operational state of the IAP, exceptions are weighted to take into account the relative importance of these exceptions and the users which they affect. Because the QoS indices are time-normalized, they may be aggregated or compared across the network by an IT administrator.

Non-linear control techniques for improving transient response to load current step change

A voltage regulator may be configured to detect variation in load current and control transient response when the load current has a high slew rate or varies at high repetition rates. A linear control circuit may be employed to control charging of an output capacitor and a load of the regulator. Upon detection of high load current step-up change at high slew rates, a non-linear control circuit may be activated. The fast load current step change may be detected by comparing an output voltage of the regulator to a feedback input of an error amplifier of the linear control circuit. The output of the error amplifier may be clamped to prevent output voltage ring-back when using the non-linear control circuit or to control load release dip. Output voltage overshoot may be controlled by turning OFF a top switch that charges the output capacitor before the inductor current becomes zero.

Low-interference communications device using chaotic signals

The low-interference communications device uses chaotic signals which are almost periodic. A chaotic circuit driven by a sine wave signal from a function generator is produced which has narrow-band features in the power spectrum. An information signal is encoded on the chaotic signal by modulating the phase of the sine wave that drives the chaotic circuit. Periodic (narrow-band) components are then removed from the chaotic signal and the chaotic signal is transmitted to a receiver device. The chaotic signal is nonlinear, so the narrow band and broad band parts of the chaotic signal have been modulated together. The transmitted signal is relatively flat, so it will not interfere with other communications signals. At the receiver, the nonlinear chaotic signal is restored by performing a nonlinear operation on the received signal, such as squaring or cubing, to remove the narrowband components. Then the information modulated onto the narrow band component is detected. When this is accomplished it is possible to detect variations in the phase of the base frequency.

A method of detecting image movement is provided. A reference frame is accessed, and a reference window is captured from the reference frame. A sampling frame is then accessed. When the reference window has not reached the margin of the reference frame, a new window is captured from the reference frame to replace the reference window. From the reference frame, a window matching the reference window is searched and a moving vector is calculated. When the sampling window reaches the margin of the sampling frame, the sampling frame replaces the reference frame. Another reference window is also captured from the reference frame, and the step of accessing the sampling frame is repeated.
