Non-invasive in vivo determination of body fluid parameter

A non-invasive method of monitoring a biological parameter concerning a bodily fluid of a subject, e.g., blood glucose of a human subject. The method includes: placing an electrode against a site of the skin of the subject; measuring impedance of the skin and determining the parameter therefrom; and using substantially the same site in another determination. Another non-invasive monitoring method includes: exposing a skin site to an aqueous salt solution for a pre-determined first period of time; removing excess of the solution from the site; measuring impedance at the site; exposing the site to the solution for a pre-determined second period of time and repeating the removing and measuring steps. It is determined whether the impedance measured falls within a pre-determined range. The latter exposure and removal steps are repeated, if necessary, until two consecutive impedance measurements within the pre-determined range are obtained.

Gate controlled field emission triode and process for fabricating the same

This invention relates to a process for fabricating ZnO nanowires with high aspect ratio at low temperature, which is associated with semiconductor manufacturing process and a gate controlled field emission triode is obtained. The process comprises providing a semiconductor substrate, depositing a dielectric layer and a conducting layer, respectively, on the semiconductor substrate, defining the positions of emitter arrays on the dielectric layer and conducting layer, depositing an ultra thin ZnO film as a seeding layer on the substrate, growing the ZnO nanowires as the emitter arrays by using hydrothermal process, and etching the areas excluding the emitter arrays, then obtaining the gate controlled field emission triode.

Variable focus liquid lens with reduced driving voltage

The invention provides a variable focus liquid lens using electrowetting, comprising a conductive first liquid and an insulating second liquid. At least one of the first liquid composed of electrolyte and the second liquid composed of insulating liquid contains a surfactant for reducing interfacial energy between the first and second liquids. An interfacial portion between the first and second liquids is gathered by surfactant to reduce driving voltage. The variable focus liquid lens according to the invention has about 50% lower driving voltage required for changing focus, ensuring stability of the two fluids.

Communications system with speech-to-text conversion and associated methods

A communications system includes a first communications device cooperating with a second communications device. The first communications device multiplexes a digital speech message and a corresponding text message into a multiplexed signal, and wirelessly transmits the multiplexed signal. The second communications device wirelessly receives the multiplexed signal, de-multiplexes the multiplexed signal digital into the speech message and the corresponding text message, decodes the speech message for an audio output transducer, and operates a text processor on the corresponding text message for display. The corresponding text message is displayed in synchronization with the speech message output by the audio output transducer. A memory is coupled to the text processor for storing the text message, and the text processor is configured to display the stored text message.
