Gelling compositions and methods

A method for the administration of a composition that augments the acidity of gastric fluid such that intra-gastric gelation of the polysaccharide:acid soluble multivalent cation formulation is initiated independent of endogenous acid secretion. The composition includes:(a) at least one of a polysaccharide, modified polysaccharide, or polysaccharide salt, each capable of ionotropic gelation, (b) at least one source of multivalent cations capable of solubilization at an acidic pH, and (c) at least one acid component capable of providing a controlled release of protons sufficient to solubilize the multivalent cations. The composition is capable of hydrating in aqueous media and subsequently forming a gel in a stomach when ingested, which gel resists peristaltic forces and remains in the stomach for an extended time. Also disclosed are edible compositions including this composition, as well as methods of inducing a satiety effect and providing controlled release of various components employing the composition of the invention.

Linear chromatic confocal microscopic system

ActiveUS20120019821A1Minimize noise interferenceHigh vertical measurement resolutionRadiation pyrometrySpectrum investigationImage resolutionLateral resolution
The present invention provides a chromatic confocal microscopic system in which two conjugate fiber modules are spatially configured and employed to conduct a detecting light from a light source and an object light reflected from an object, respectively. By means of the two spatially corresponding fiber modules, the detecting light is projected on the object and the reflected light from the object is entered into the other fiber module. Since each fiber of the fiber module is capable of filtering out the unfocused light and stray lights and allowing the focused light pass therethrough a line slit, thereby minimizing potential interference from light cross talk caused by the overlapped light spots, not only can the present invention obtain the information of surface profile of the object with high vertical measurement resolution, but also achieve high lateral resolution during confocal measurement.

Surgical implement detection system

InactiveUS7784468B2Improve detection accuracyPrevent disruption of functioning of essentialSurgeryDiagnostic recording/measuringEngineeringElectromagnetic field
Surgical implements used during an operating procedure are detected in human tissue. Markers attached to the surgical implements change their impedance at a preselected frequency in the presence of an electromagnetic field. Each of the markers is thereby provided with signal-identifying characteristics. The signal-identifying characteristics are detected outside the operating room in an accurate, reliable manner. Potential interference with operating room electronic instrumentation is avoided, the possibility of operator error is reduced and system cost and space requirements are substantially lowered.

Anatomic and functional imaging of tagged molecules in animals

A novel functional imaging system for use in the imaging of unrestrained and non-anesthetized small animals or other subjects and a method for acquiring such images and further registering them with anatomical X-ray images previously or subsequently acquired. The apparatus comprises a combination of an IR laser profilometry system and gamma, PET and / or SPECT, imaging system, all mounted on a rotating gantry, that permits simultaneous acquisition of positional and orientational information and functional images of an unrestrained subject that are registered, i.e. integrated, using image processing software to produce a functional image of the subject without the use of restraints or anesthesia. The functional image thus obtained can be registered with a previously or subsequently obtained X-ray CT image of the subject. The use of the system described herein permits functional imaging of a subject in an unrestrained / non-anesthetized condition thereby reducing the stress on the subject and eliminating any potential interference with the functional testing that such stress might induce.

Printhead with RFID antenna

A printhead with a built-in antenna. The built-in antennaa allows for close proximity between the media and the antenna, particularly as media passes under the printhead. The RFID antenna embedded in the print head eliminates the potential interference and crosstalk between the smart labels. The built-in antenna at the print station allows for RF writing and printing at the same time. The close proximity of the antenna to the RFID tag also allows for reduced power, which is an advantage in portable devices that often have limited battery life. Having a RFID antenna built in to the print head, also allows for a printer with smaller dimensions. Further, the printer assembly and repairs are quicker because there is no need for an additional patch antenna component.

Method and device to enhance image quality in digital video processing systems using dithering

A processing chain for a digital image signal (12) applies a dither pattern (14), having a first spectrum, to the image signal at a point in the processing chain. A further noise pattern (10) is applied to the image signal during the processing chain. The noise pattern (10) has a second spectrum which is configured such that the combination of the first spectrum and second spectrum results in a more continuous spectrum. Another aspect describes a noise pattern (10) which can be used as an offset dither pattern for digital images, especially before colour bit depth reduction. The noise pattern comprises an array of values which are linearly distributed across a range, with each value in the range occurring an equal number of times. Similar values at extreme ends of the range of values are dispersed within the array. The pattern has a Poisson-disk two-dimensional spectral energy distribution. Values are positioned in the array based on distance to similar values in neighbouring repetitions of the array. The array has “magic square” properties.

In a radio network environment, reducing interference among overlapping cells

Disclosed is a method for a femtocell to reduce interference with an overlapping macrocell. The femtocell determines soft-frequency-reuse (“SFR”) information of the macrocell. From that information, the femtocell determines which frequency sub-channels are assigned by the macrocell for its cell-center users and which frequency sub-channels are assigned for cell-edge users. (Cell-edge users are given a higher transmission power profile in order to overcome potential interference with neighboring macrocells.) Then, the femtocell selects from the cell-center user frequency sub-channels for transmission to the femtocell's users. By transmitting on the cell-center user frequency sub-channels, the femtocell reduces interference with the overlapping macrocell. The femtocell continues to update its knowledge of the macrocell's SFR information and re-assigns frequency sub-channels as the SFR changes. If the macrocell detects that one of its cell-center users is “close enough” to the femtocell, then the macrocell re-assigns the cell-center user as a cell-edge user to overcome interference.

Determination of recombinant glycosylated proteins and peptides in biological fluids

Polyclonal antibodies can be produced that reacts with recombinant EPO and its degradation products but not with native EPO. This antibody precipitation can be used to identify those glycopeptides that are uniquely reactive. These glycopeptides can be produced on preparative scale and used in the production of monoclonal antibodies which are screened against the original EPO and glycopeptides to select antibodies reactive to the specific glycopeptides an recombinant EPO but not to native human EPO. The monoclonal antibodies so selected are incorporated in a conventional ELISA and used to monitor urine and other bodily samples taken from athletes, either human or animal, and patients for presence and level of recombinant peptides or proteins. Alternatively, the polyclonal antibody can be used directly to produce ELISA tests.
