System and method for monitoring and controlling remote devices

The present system is directed to a computerized system for monitoring and controlling remote devices by transmitting data between the remote systems and a gateway interface via a packet message protocol system. The system comprises one or more remote sensors to be read and possibly one or more actuators to be remotely controlled. The remote sensor(s) / actuator(s) then interface with uniquely identified remote transceivers that transmit and / or receive data. If necessary in individual applications, signal repeaters may relay information between the transceiver(s) and the gateway interface. Communication links between the remote transceivers and the gateway interface are preferably wireless but may also be implemented via a mixture of wireless and wired communication links. To successfully communicate between the transceiver(s) and the gateway interface, the present invention receives a plurality of RF signal transmissions containing a packet protocol via RF signals that includes sender and receiver identifiers, a description of the packet itself, a message number, any commands, the data, and an error detector. In addition, the packet protocol can be easily integrated with alternate data communication protocols for use with systems other than the Internet.

Method and apparatus for transparent distributed network-attached storage with web cache communication protocol/anycast and file handle redundancy

A distributed network-attached storage network provides content distribution using conventional file transfer protocols such as NFS and CIFS. A filer proxy accepts a client request and translates the client request to a file transfer protocol accepted at the file system having the file requested in the client request. The filer proxy generates a file handle for the file containing redundant filer proxy information to be used for failover to a backup filer proxy in the event of a network error or failure of an original filer proxy. The file handle also contains information for network security purposes such as detection of forged file handles.

Account creation via a mobile device

Creating an account via a mobile device. A request to create an account is received from a user via a mobile device. The request is received from the mobile device according to a wireless communications protocol. In response to the received request, a confirmation message is delivered to the mobile device for rendering to the user as a challenge. A response to the rendered challenge is received from the user via the mobile device. It is determined if the received response to the rendered challenge corresponds to the delivered confirmation message. And the account is created for the user if the received response to the rendered challenge is determined to correspond to the delivered confirmation message. Other aspects of the invention are directed to computer-readable media for use with account creation via a mobile device.

Broadband multi-service, switching, transmission and distribution architecture for low-cost telecommunications networks

A low-cost, distributed broadband multi-service communication network includes intelligent hybrid communication nodes which communicate with one another. The hybrid communication nodes have multi-media interfaces and processors that allow the node to receive a communication broadcast at one protocol interface, convert the broadcast to other communication protocols, and route it to those different communication protocol interfaces for transmission to other communication media. The smart hybrid communication nodes provides a distributed system that does not rely on a central intelligence, so that the network can be instantly deployed and expanded. In addition, a weatherproof container permits the nodes to be physically mounted adjacent to a communication antenna. This eliminates the need for a cable to connect a transmitter interface to the antenna (which can be several hundred feet away at the top of a tower). Even expensive cable results in substantial power and signal loss.

Handover between wireless telecommunication networks/systems

A method and a wireless telecommunication system of performing network-assisted handover of calls between a serving network and another wireless network that employs communication protocols different from those of the serving network. A message is sent from a mobile station of a user to the serving wireless network, which includes an indication that the mobile station is capable of communicating with the neighboring wireless network. Information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network is also sent from the serving wireless network to the mobile station. Using the information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network, the mobile station receives radio signals from the neighboring wireless network. The quality of the radio signals between the mobile station and the neighboring wireless network is measured. The serving wireless network sends a message to the neighboring wireless network to request a handover of the communication transaction when the quality of the radio signals between the neighboring wireless network and the mobile station meets a predetermined minimum threshold. Then a handover of the communication transaction from the serving wireless network to the neighboring wireless network is executed after the neighboring wireless network has established a communication channel for the mobile station pursuant to the handover request.

Methods and apparatus for network message traffic redirection

Conventional methods of addressing a Distributed Denial of Service attack include taking the target node offline, and routing all traffic to an alternate countermeasure, or “sinkhole” router, therefore requiring substantial lag time to reconfigure the target router into the network. In a network, a system operator monitors a network for undesirable message traffic. Upon a notification of such undesirable message traffic, traffic is rerouted to a filter complex to separate undesirable traffic. The filter complex establishes an alternate route using a second communications protocol, and uses the alternate route to redirect the desirable message traffic to the target node. The use of the second protocol avoids conflict between the redirected desirable traffic and the original, or first, protocol which now performs the reroute. In this manner, the filter complex employs a second alternate communications protocol to reroute and redirect desirable message traffic to the target node while diverting undesirable message traffic, and therefore avoids widespread routing configuration changes by limiting the propagation breadth of the second protocol.
