A mechanism that allows firmware to be updated in a secure manner is discussed. Two attributes are used in the actual ROM to refer to a Virtual ROM module. The two attributes are a version attribute and a reference to a separate module that is capable of validating updates. The update process updates the message digest associated with the first Virtual ROM module and the version attribute associated with the first Virtual ROM module. The update process also produces a new copy of the corresponding file (that may be located on the local disk) that when hashed will “match” the new message digest.

System and method for securely storing firmware

A mechanism for creating and accessing a secure storage area for firmware that stores a “Virtual ROM” module reference or pointer in the actual ROM that includes a unique identifier for the virtual ROM module to be retrieved is discussed. The actual ROM image also contains a generated unique identifier for the whole machine. In retrieving a Virtual ROM module, both the module identifier and the machine identifier are used. Once retrieved, the module is validated using a message digest stored in the Virtual ROM module reference. If required, the Virtual ROM module is then decrypted using a secret key that is stored elsewhere in the actual ROM. Updates to the Virtual ROM module are made in memory by pre-boot code. At a point in time when these updates are complete, the Virtual ROM module is written back out to the location from which it was retrieved. The Virtual ROM module reference that is in the actual ROM is updated to reflect the new message digest value and the module reference and the machine identifier used for the PC are write-disabled. Additionally, if the storage has been encrypted, and a secret key is being used, the region of the actual ROM that contains the secret key is read-disabled.

A control circuit portion in an air compressor finds the rate of decrease of pressure inside a tank portion when a motor is at rest relative to the time based on a detection signal from a pressure sensor. Where the rate of decrease of pressure is greater than a given value, the motor is started without waiting for the pressure inside the tank to decrease to a motor restart pressure value, the pressure inside the tank portion rises to a given motor stop pressure value and the motor is then controlled to come to a stop. Where the rate of decrease of pressure is less than the given value, the motor is started when the pressure inside the tank has decreased to the motor restart pressure value. After the start of the motor, the motor is controlled such that it comes to a stop when the pressure inside the tank portion increases to a given value lower than the motor stop pressure value.

As each layer ablates, an abutting layer exhibiting a similar geometry, is revealed, undergoes a gas phase change, and ablates. This process repeats and persists until oxidizer flow is terminated or the fuel grain material is exhausted. The fuel grain may be manufactured by an additive manufacturing process.

A process for enhancing precipitation strengthening in steel and for making a high-strength micro-alloy steel, and a steel made from the process. The process includes the step of deforming the steel containing a suitable precipitate strengthening substance, at a temperature at which the microstructure of the steel is essentially stable and at which those precipitation strengthening particles that form are of a desirable particle size for precipitation strengthening. Deforming the steel introduces dislocations in the crystal structure of the steel, which increases the kinetics of precipitation by increasing the number of precipitation nucleation sites and accelerating the rate of diffusion of the precipitate material. The steel may be deformed by bending or rolling the steel. Preferably the process also includes the step of cooling the steel at a rapid rate so as to minimize the formation of precipitate particles of a larger-than-desired size.

The process of enzymatic biomass hydrolysis includes: attaching biomass degrading enzymes to a surface of functionalized particles having paramagnetic properties; mixing the particles with a biomass; recovering the enzymes via magnetic separation; and re-using the enzymes in a subsequent process. The process provides a product feed stream which may be subjected to further processing. The process may be repeated multiple times wherein the biomass is sequentially subjected to different enzymes.
