Indirect lighting device for light guide illumination

A lighting apparatus is described. One embodiment of the lighting apparatus includes a substrate and a lighting element. The lighting element is coupled to the substrate to emit light through a light exit plane. The light exit plane is substantially perpendicular to the substrate. By providing a lighting device with a substrate oriented perpendicular to the light exit plane of the lighting device, the lighting device can enable better mixing of the light from different LEDs. The lighting apparatus facilitates light mixing, generally, to minimize or eliminate dark spots on the diffusion panel. The lighting device also facilitates color mixing to produce relatively consistent white light on the diffusion panel.

Method and apparatus for run length limited TMDS-like encoding of data

A serial data transmission system in which a transmitter encodes data in accordance with a TMDS-like encoding algorithm and transmits the TMDS-like encoded data over a serial link to a receiver. The encoded data are transmitted as a run length limited (“RLL”) code word sequence, including transition-minimized code words. In some embodiments, the RLL code word sequence includes only Min words, including both DC balancing Min words and DC unbalancing Min words. In other embodiments, the RLL code word sequence includes both transition-maximized code words and transition-minimized code words. Other aspects of the invention are circuitry and methods for TMDS-like encoding of data for transmission as an RLL code word sequence.

Resolution enhancing image display apparatus

An image display apparatus that presents an observer an image of higher resolution than the original resolution of an image display device used, thereby allowing the observer to view a clear and beautiful image. An illuminating optical system (5) illuminates an image display device with illuminating light from a light source (1). The image display device displays an image by transmission or reflection of the illuminating light. A viewing optical system leads the image to an observer's eyeball (10). The apparatus has two image display devices (9a and 9b). An optical coupling / separating element having a light-coupling or light-separating action is provided between the image display devices (9a and 9b) and the observer's eyeball (10) to superimpose images of the two image display devices on one another. The optical coupling / separating element has an optical coupling / separating surface (40) tilted at an angle of approximately 45 degrees with respect to each of the image display devices (9a and 9b). The viewing optical system projects the superimposed images into one eyeball (10) of the observer as an enlarged virtual image.

The present invention provides a backlight device which uses solid-state light emitting elements capable of emitting lights of three colors consisting of red, green and blue as a light source, can enhance the light utilizing efficiency, and can be made light-weighted. The backlight device includes a main light guide plate which has a light irradiation surface which irradiates light forwardly by developing the light in plane and has a light reflection surface which faces the light irradiation surface in an opposed manner and reflects the light toward the light irradiation surface; a sub light guide plate which is arranged on a back surface of the main light guide plate, is divided into a first sub light guide plate and a second sub light guide plate on both end sides by way of a first air layer disposed at a center portion, and forms light incident surfaces on facing end surfaces of the first sub light guide plate and the second sub light guide plate in the inside of the first air layer; a first light reflection plate which is arranged on a front surface of the sub light guide plate which faces the main light guide plate; a second light reflection plate which is arranged on a back surface of the sub light guide plate which faces the first light reflection plate in an opposed manner; reflectors which are arranged on both end surfaces of the main light guide plate and the sub light guide plate and optically couple the main light guide plate and the sub light guide plate; and a light emitting diode board which is mounted in a state that the light emitting diode board faces a back surface of the sub light guide plate and light emitting diodes capable of emitting light of plurality of colors in the inside of the first air layer are arranged at least in a row. Due to such a constitution, a light-source light from the light emitting diodes capable of emitting lights of plurality of colors is subjected to color mixture and an effective optical path can be elongated and hence, the light utilizing efficiency can be enhanced and, at the same time, the backlight device can be made light-weighted.
