A rewinder having a first winding roll that transports and supports the web, at least one core support plate that is curved for receiving and guiding cores adjacent the first winding roll, and a web separator adjacent the first winding roll and movable into pressing relationship with the web at a velocity at least equal to that of the web. The rewinder of exemplary embodiments winds a web of material a nip defined by the first winding roll, a second winding roll and a rider roll. The web separator of exemplary embodiments comprises a rotatable plurality of fingers that rotates about a common shaft. Because the web separator contacts the web moving at a velocity at least equal to that of the web, the web is effectively separated upstream of the web separator, between the core and the web separator.

In this study, plate type heat pipes having mesh capillaries were investigated experimentally and theoretically. A test apparatus was designed to test thermal performance of a plate type copper-water heat pipe having one or two layers of #50 or #80 mesh capillary structures with 5 to 50 W heat input. A working fluid charge volume fraction varied from 13% to 50% of the heat pipe internal space. In addition to horizontal orientation, the heat pipes were tested with the evaporator section elevated up to a 40 degree inclination angle. Temperature distribution of the heat pipe was measured, and the evaporator, adiabatic and condensation resistance of the heat pipe were calculated separately. The effects of mesh size, charge volume, and inclination angle on each thermal resistance were discussed. In general, the #80 mesh yields lower thermal resistances; and inclination angle has more significant effect on the condenser section than the evaporator section. Theoretical models were proposed to interpolate the evaporation and condensation phenomena shown by the experiments. The present model predicts the experimental data of evaporation resistance to within ±20%, and most condensation resistance data to within ±30%.

Methods and systems for efficient and accurate re-starting of data transfers using volatile data transfer mechanisms, such as pipes, following an error. According to one embodiment, portions of the transferred data can be saved in a fallback file. In addition, checkpoint commands can be periodically provided, upon which much of the data in the fallback file can be overwritten. During the original transmission, the data that has passed through the mechanism can be counted, and a signature for the data that has passed can be accumulated. After certain error conditions, the data in the fallback file can be recovered and passed to the receiving process and the transmission can then be resumed at the point where it had left off. After other errors requiring a complete re-start, a second signature of the re-transmitted data can be accumulated and original and second signatures compared to determine if the data is valid.

A system and method are provided for loading a sample into an analytical instrument using acoustic droplet ejection (“ADE”) in combination with a continuous flow sampling probe. An acoustic droplet ejector is used to eject small droplets of a fluid sample containing an analyte into the sampling tip of a continuous flow sampling probe, where the acoustically ejected droplet combines with a continuous, circulating flow stream of solvent within the flow probe. Fluid circulation within the probe transports the sample through a sample transport capillary to an outlet that directs the analyte away from the probe to an analytical instrument, e.g., a device that detects the presence, concentration quantity, and / or identity of the analyte. When the analytical instrument is a mass spectrometer or other type of device requiring the analyte to be in ionized form, the exiting droplets pass through an ionization region, e.g., an electrospray ion source, prior to entering the mass spectrometer or other analytical instrument. The method employs active flow control and enables real-time kinetic measurements.
