Above-water monitoring of swimming pools

An above-water system provides automatic alerting for possible drowning victims in swimming pools or the like. One or more electro-optical sensors are placed above the pool surface. Sequences of images are digitized and analyzed electronically to determine whether there are humans within the image, and whether such humans are moving in a manner that would suggest drowning. Effects due to glint, refraction, and variations in light, are offset automatically by the system. If a potential drowning incident is detected, the system produces an alarm sound, and / or a warning display, so that an operator can determine whether action must be taken.

Pool cover drive mechanism

An apparatus for retracting a pool cover from over a pool, or extending a pool cover over a pool, includes a pool cover collecting drum supported for rotation on its ends, and a drive gear connected to the drum. A power gear for engaging the drive gear is operably connected to a portable, battery operated electric drill by a power shaft. When the drill is activated, the drive gear rotates the pool cover collecting drum to collect and retract the pool cover from over the pool. The pool cover is placed back over the pool by operation of a complementary apparatus on the opposite side of the pool, such as a rope spool collecting apparatus having an engageable drive gear. The gear-driven spool pulls on a rope attached to a rigid end or carrier of the pool cover. As the pool cover is extended and retracted it slides in a track, allowing the cover to serve as a safety cover. The gears may be located in a sealed housing filled with lubricant. The drive shaft may include a universal joint, and the drill may be designed to engage the power shaft with a flexible socket adapter.

Open-air filtration cleaning device for pools and hot tubs

An open-air filtration device cleans swimming pools and hot tubs in an efficient, reliable manner. An open-air filter with a suction chamber unit comprises two scrubbing brushes and an impeller powered by a motor drive. Water containing debris is pumped to a level above the swimming pool or hot tub surface. The debris containing water is discharged through a spout into a filter tube. A filter element associated with the filter tube, and open to atmosphere filters the debris containing water by gravitational forces solely. The spout and filter tube are, optionally, attached to a pole that manually propels the suction unit. They may alternatively be attached to a floating platform that floats on the water surface of the pool or hot tub. If filter efficiency decreases, the water level in the filter tube rises, indicating that the filter element must be replaced. A rise in water level is visually observed or detected automatically and communicated using a visible or audible alarm.

Heat exchanger apparatus and method for evaporative cooling refrigeration unit

This invention is for a highly efficient heat transfer unit and method for heat transfer for an air conditioning refrigeration unit. The invention has a plurality of condenser coils that stand generally vertically upright (with up to 20° tilt to optimize downward water flow with air being pulled across) between a splash louver and an evaporative fill material. The evaporative fill material and the splash louver transfer heat from the water by air cross flow to make the air conditioning unit very efficient and reduces the amount of copper coils needed. The condenser coils are cooled by water flowing down through them and into a sump. The condenser coils are also cooled by air pulled across them by a fan mounted on the top of the air conditioning unit. The sump in the bottom of the unit has a wall that directs the water in it to a water pump that then sends the water to the water distribution pipe. The water pipe covers the water distribution member with water, which then allows the water to flow down the condenser coils. The large amount of heat that is transferred from the condenser coils to the water and the air cross flow is what enables the air conditioning unit to be so efficient. A low pressure drop of refrigerant in the condensing coils, the large surface area, and horizontal air flow also helps the air conditioning unit to be efficient.

Swimming pool drain

A sump for a swimming pool or spa includes a grate having an elongated slot for inflow of water at a low velocity high flow rate. A housing of relatively large capacity includes an outlet for conveying water to an oversized suction line to maintain the low velocity high flow rate to the junction with a conventionally sized standard suction line in fluid communication with a suction pump. A bypass line in fluid communication with the water in the pool or spa discharges water into the housing when the slot is sufficiently covered to prevent satisfying the flow rate into the suction line demanded by the pump and thereby prevent a level of suction at the slot sufficient to entrap clothing or a body part of a swimmer against the grate. The grate, a frame supporting the grate on the housing and the housing are devoid of elements that might cause entanglement of hair drawn into the sump. A hydrostatic valve may be coupled with the housing at locations of a pool or spa where the ground water level is sufficiently high to cause flotation of the pool or spa when partially filled or empty.
