Selective and renewable encryption for secure distribution of video on-demand

Selective encryption is provided in a process which includes: determining whether a predetermined criterion is satisfied; setting a selective encryption status field if the predetermined criterion is satisfied; and encrypting an unencrypted payload to generate an encrypted payload, and constructing a packet with the encrypted payload, if the predetermined criterion is satisfied. The predetermined criterion may be one of several criteria, each of which reduce the required amount of encryption and decryption while maintaining a high level of security. Renewable encryption is provided in a process which includes: copying a first encrypted digital video program from a remote server to a video source; decrypting the first encrypted digital video program using a first key to generate an unencrypted digital video program; encrypting the unencrypted digital video program using a second key to generate a second encrypted digital video program; transmitting the second encrypted digital video program from the video source to the remote server; and deleting the first encrypted digital video program from the remote server.

Method and system in a computer network for the reliable and consistent ordering of client requests

A method and system for reliably and consistently delivering client requests in a computer network having at least one client connectable to one or more servers among a group of servers, wherein each server among the group of servers replicates a particular network service to ensure that the particular network service remains uninterrupted in the event of a server failure. A particular server is designated among the group of servers to manage client requests which seek to update a particular network service state, prior to any receipt of a client request which seeks to update the particular network service state by any remaining servers among the group of servers. Thereafter, an executable order is specified in which client requests which seek to update the particular network service state are processed among the remaining servers, such that the executable order, upon execution, sequences the client request which seeks to update the particular network service state with respect to all prior and subsequent client requests. The executable order and the client request which seeks to update the particular network service state are automatically transferred to the remaining servers from the particular server, in response to initiating the client request. Thereafter, the client request which seeks to update the particular network service state is processed in a tentative mode at the particular server without waiting for the executable order to be executed through to completion among the remaining servers.

Resource invalidation in a content delivery network

A repeater server in a content delivery network (CDN) maintains a list of resources that are no longer valid. When the server gets a request for a resource, it checks whether that resource is on the list, and, if so, it replicates the resource from a content provider's content source such as an origin server. Otherwise the repeater server tries to serve a copy of the requested resource or to obtain a copy from another location in the CDN.

Streaming while fetching broadband video objects using heterogeneous and dynamic optimized segmentation size

An video data object distribution system for transfer of video data objects includes a network of digital data file servers. The network of digital data file servers communicate with a client system to transfer video data objects. A scheduling apparatus schedules the transfer of the video data objects. A client streaming device within the client begins transfer of a first segment such that the video data object is started streaming of prior to reception of a totality of the first segment. An ordered sequential transfer device orders and sequentially transfers segments of the video data object to the client system. The preemption device allows persistent video data object transfer of video data object without resending the video data objects. A hierarchical caching controller copies segments of any of the video data objects from a central distribution server to any of the network of data file servers.

Method and system for replicating content over a network

A system and method is directed to replicating packet transactions over a network. The system includes a replication component and a plurality of servers enabled to include substantially the same content. The replication component receives a packet from a client and forwards it to a first server. If the packet is to be replicated, a replicate of the packet is forwarded to the other servers in the plurality of servers so that at least a portion of the content on the first server and the other servers are synchronized. Forwarding of the replicate packet may be delayed for some period of time, and need not be concurrent. If responses received from each server are substantially the same, a message is sent to the client. Moreover, transaction replication can occur across servers arranged in different configurations, including disparate databases.

System and method for network file system server replication using reverse path lookup

The system and method described herein may use reverse path lookup to build mappings between file handles that represent network file system objects and full path names associated therewith and distinguish hard links between different file system objects having the same identifier with different parents or file names. The mappings and information distinguishing the hard links may then be cached to enable replicating changes to the file system. For example, a server may search the cached information using a file handle associated with a changed file system object to obtain the file name and full path name associated therewith. The server may then send the file name and full path name and metadata describing how the file system object was changed to a replica host, which may then replicate the change to the file system object.

Method for shortening the resynchronization time following failure in a computer system utilizing separate servers for redundancy

ActiveUS7246255B1Efficient system recoveryMinimum computing timeDigital data information retrievalProgram synchronisationMass storageServer replication
An apparatus for and method of enhancing reliability within a cluster lock processing system having a relatively large number of commodity cluster instruction processors which are managed by a cluster lock manager. Because the commodity processors have virtually no system viability features such as memory protection, failure recovery, etc., the cluster / lock processors assume the responsibility for providing these functions. The low cost of the commodity cluster instruction processors makes the system almost linearly scalable. The cluster / locking, caching, and mass storage accessing functions are fully integrated into a single hardware platform which performs the role of the cluster / lock master. Upon failure of this hardware platform, a second redundant hardware platform converts from slave to master role. The logic for the failure detection and role swapping is placed within software, which can run as an application under a commonly available operating system. Furthermore, the recovery is completely accomplished without assistance of the Host computer(s) or ultimate user(s) coupled via the Host computer(s). Following repair of the failed server, it is restarted in an orderly fashion to resume a slave role. For the server to be completely restored, coherent memory must be copied from master to slave. Because cluster lock processing must be paused throughout the system to transfer the copy, it is important to minimize the transfer time to minimize the impact on system throughput.

File server and file server controller

The redundancy of a file is maintained without using a centralized controller in a system where file servers are connected via a network. Each domain ND within a file storage system includes a file server FS, a monitoring server WS, and a client CL, which are connected via a LAN. When the file server FS detects a failure in another file server FS in the system, it considers that redundancy of a file stored in the failed file server FS has decreased, and then determines whether or not it is responsible for recovering the redundancy. If the file server FS has determined that it is responsible for recovering the redundancy, it selects a file server FS as a file copy source and a file server FS as a file copy destination, and then copies the identical file from the copy source server to the copy destination server.

Periodic data replication

Systems and methods for replicating data from a production server to a backup server include recording at least one operation on one or more data items stored in a volume of a production server. The operation may be recorded as at least one journal event in a memory. A determination may then be made regarding whether a system malfunction incident has occurred in the production server and if so, a first set of journal events may be transferred from the memory to an auxiliary storage at a first time instant. At a second time instant, a second set of journal events recorded in the memory between the first and second time instants may be transferred to the auxiliary storage. At one journal event stored in the auxiliary storage unit may then be sent for replication to a backup server.

File server and file server controller

The object of the present invention is to maintain redundancy of file without using a centralized controller in a system where a plurality of file servers are connected with each other via a network. Each domain ND within a file storage system 10 includes a file server FS, a monitoring server WS, and a client CL, which are connected with each other via a LAN. When the file server FS detects a failure having occurred in another file server FS included in the system, it considers that redundancy of a file stored in the failed file server FS has decreased, and then determines whether or not it is responsible for recovering the redundancy. If the file server FS has determined that it is responsible for recovering the redundancy, it selects a file server FS as a file copy source and a file server FS as a file copy destination, and then copies based on the selection the identical file from the copy source server to the copy destination server.
