An N-phase switching voltage regulator includes N current sensing elements which carry respective phase currents. The voltages present at the switch node sides of the sensing elements are summed and presented to an amplifier which also receives the regulator's output voltage, to produce an output which is proportional to the regulator's total output current Iout. The invention also provides a means for direct insertion of total inductor output current information into a regulator's voltage-mode control loop, to provide active voltage positioning (AVP) for the output voltage. A voltage based on total inductor output current is summed with the regulator's reference voltage; this sum and Vout are applied to the voltage control error amplifier, the output of which is processed to operate the regulator's switches. This enables the regulator's output to have a desired droop impedance and to provide AVP of Vout as a function of total filtered inductor output current Iout(fltr).

A system and method provides virtual ripple signal generation for use in voltage regulation applications. Some switch-mode power converters or voltage regulators use output signal ripple to effect voltage regulation. A virtual ripple generator provides this type of voltage regulator with a virtual ripple signal comprising an offset component responsive to actual load voltage, but with a generated AC ripple component of arbitrary magnitude that is independent of actual output signal ripple. Unlike the actual output ripple signal, the generated AC ripple component is not dependent on implementation specifics, such as circuit board layout or output capacitor ESR, and may have its gain set independent of the offset component. The generated AC ripple component is synchronized to the inductor switching actions of the voltage regulator and thus reflects actual inductor phase switching in single and multi-phase regulation applications. Virtual ripple signal generation can include output (load) voltage droop compensation.

Each piece of work is identified by a tag that indicates how the work is to be synchronized and ordered. Throughput is increased by processing work having different tags in parallel on different processor cores. Packet processing can be broken up into different phases, each phase having a different tag dependent on ordering and synchronization constraints for the phase. A tag switch operation initiated by a core switches a tag dependent on the phase. A dedicated tag switch bus minimizes latency for the tag switch operation.
