The present invention relates to a system and method to facilitate efficient and automated processing of messages. A bulk filter is provided to categorize one or more received messages according to a range of classification, the range spanning from at least a bulk classification of values to at least a non-bulk classification of values. A second filter is provided to further classify the received messages in order to automatically facilitate processing of the messages. The range of classification includes a continuum of values based on a likelihood that the received messages are determined to tend toward or fall within the bulk classification of values or toward / within the non-bulk classification of values. Also, the bulk filter or filters can include an adjustable threshold setting to determine or define differences between the bulk classifications and the non-bulk classifications. Various combinations of filters are possible including multiple filter arrangements, parallel arrangements, cascaded arrangements, and other arrangements to facilitate filtering and sorting of messages in order that users can more efficiently process such information in a timely manner. Applications include the enhancement of classification procedures for identifying urgent or important email from non-urgent or non-important email, with the combination of bulk-email filters with urgency or importance filters in cascaded and parallel filtering methodologies.

Radio Receiver with shared low noise amplifier for multi-standard operation in a single antenna system with loft isolation and flexible gain control

A radio receiver is described that processes multiple wireless standards using a single antenna according to embodiments of the invention. The radio receiver includes a single antenna, and a low noise amplifier that is connected to the antenna, without an intervening power divider or power splitter. The output of the low noise amplifier feeds multiple wireless receivers in a parallel arrangement that are operating according to different communications standards, including for example a Bluetooth and a WLAN 802.11. Additional wireless standards and their corresponding receivers could be added as well. The input impedance of the low noise amplifier defines the impedance seen by the antenna, regardless of which operational standard is actually in use. Each signal path includes an additional low noise amplifier having a gain that can be customized for the particular signal path and receiver in use, and which also improves the reverse isolation between signal paths. Further, a switch can be added to one or more of the signal paths so as to further improve isolation when a particular path is not being used.

The low-pass filter further comprises, either: (i) a series arrangement of a second capacitor (C2) and a damping resistor (R2), which series arrangement is arranged in parallel with the first capacitor (C1), or (ii) a parallel arrangement of a third capacitor (CB) and a damping resistor (RB) arranged in series with the first capacitor (CA), or (iii) a series arrangement of a third inductor (L3) and a damping resistor (R3), which series arrangement is arranged in parallel with the second inductor (L2), or (iv) a parallel arrangement of a fourth inductor (LD) and a damping resistor (RD), which parallel arrangement is arranged in series with the second inductor (LC).

The second substrate has a top surface and a bottom surface, and is electrically connected to the first chip. The second chip is attached to the top surface of the second substrate to which the second chip is electrically connected. The second molding compound encapsulates the second chip and part of the top surface of the second substrate. Whereby, the relative large area caused by the parallel arrangement of a plurality of conventional package structures can be reduced, and there is no need to redesign signal-transmitting path.

Low power thermoelectric generator

A thermoelectric generator has a top plate disposed in spaced relation above a bottom plate. A series of foil segments are electrically and mechanically connected end-to-end to generate a foil assembly that is spirally wound and in thermal contact with the bottom and top plates. Each foil segment comprises a substrate having a series of spaced alternating n-type and p-type thermoelectric legs disposed in parallel arrangement on the front substrate surface. Each of the n-type and p-type legs is formed of a bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric material having a thickness of about 10-100 microns, a width of about 10-100 microns and a length of about 100-500 microns. The alternating n-type and p-type thermoelectric legs are electrically connected in series and thermally connected in parallel such that a temperature differential between the bottom and top plates results in the generation of power.

Medical valve and method to monitor intra-abdominal pressure

An apparatus for monitoring the intra-abdominal pressure of a hospitalized patient includes a urinary catheter connected to a urine valve providing selectable communication between a discharge end of the urinary catheter and either a drain or a fluid source. Preferably, the urine valve is adapted for remote actuation and has a housing adapted to resist patient discomfort from leg-valve contact. Plumbing structure desirably maintains fluid supply and drain conduits in a substantially parallel arrangement to assist routing those conduits between a patient's legs. When the urine valve is oriented to permit communication with the fluid source, an infusion pump may be used to infuse a known quantity of fluid through the urine valve and into the patient's bladder. A pressure transducer desirably is connected in-circuit to indicate the fluid's pressure. To facilitate the infusion process, an automatic flow control device may be included in a fluid supply path and arranged to permit repetitive operation of a syringe to inject a bolus of fluid into the patient's bladder. Subsequent to a period of time in which to make a pressure measurement, preferred embodiments of the urine valve automatically return to a bladder draining position.

A control circuit and method for controlling a power factor correction circuit comprising: an inductor having an input terminal to receive an input voltage and an output terminal series connected to an anode of a diode; a first capacitor connected between a cathode of said diode and ground; a first switch connected between an anode of said diode and ground; a series arrangement of a second capacitor and a parallel arrangement of a resistor and a second switch series connected with said second capacitor. The control circuit is operable to generate synchronous first and second switch control signals to respectively control said first and second switches, wherein during inrush current conditions when said input voltage drops-in after an interruption, said control circuit is operable to cause said first and second switches to be synchronously switched at increasing duty cycles. The method comprises charging a first capacitor from an input voltage source; isolating the first capacitor from the input voltage source; transferring a portion of charge stored in said first capacitor to a second capacitor while said input voltage source is isolated from said first capacitor and from said second capacitor; and repeatedly said charging, isolating, and transferring until a voltage is formed on said second capacitor that is approximately equal to said input voltage source.

A high voltage switching circuit includes first and second group III-V transistors, the second group III-V transistor having a greater breakdown voltage than the first group III-V transistor. The circuit further includes a silicon diode in a parallel arrangement with the first group III-V transistor, the parallel arrangement being in cascade with the second group III-V transistor. The circuit is effectively a three-terminal device, where a first terminal is coupled to a gate of the second III-V transistor, a source of the first III-V transistor, and an anode of the silicon diode. A second terminal is coupled to a gate of the first group III-V transistor, and a third terminal is coupled to a drain of the second group III-V transistor. The first group III-V transistor might be an enhancement mode transistor. The second group III-V transistor might be a depletion mode transistor. The first and second group III-V transistors can be GaN HEMTs.

Preferably, the urine valve has a housing adapted to resist patient discomfort from leg-valve contact. One operable protective housing may be embodied as a separate tray component. When the urine valve is oriented for communication to the fluid source, an infusion pump may be used to introduce a known quantity of fluid through the urine valve and into the patient's bladder where the fluid's pressure can be measured. Desirably, a double check valve is included in a fluid supply path and arranged to permit repetitive operation of a syringe to inject a bolus of fluid into the patient's bladder. Subsequent to making a pressure measurement, the urine valve is returned to the bladder draining position.

A thermoelectric device and method of manufacturing the device, where thermoelectric elements of opposite conductivity type are located on respective opposing sides of a heat source member. Heat sinks are disposed on opposite sides of the thermoelectric elements. Peltier metal contacts are positioned between the thermoelectric elements and each of the heat source member and heat sinks. A plurality of devices may be arranged together in a thermally parallel, electrically series arrangement, or in a thermally parallel, electrically parallel arrangement. The arrangement of the elements allow the direction of current flow through the pairs of elements to be substantially the same as the direction of current flow through the metal contacts.

Defibrillator with a reconfigurable battery module

Methods and apparatus are provided for portable medical devices such as defibrillators having different charging and operating voltages. The apparatus comprises a connection for receiving DC input voltage VIN, an energy storage device (e.g., a capacitor), a battery having at least two cells therein coupled to the connection and the capacitor, and switches to selectively reconfigure the battery cells so as to: (i) charge from VIN, and (ii) discharge to the capacitor at VOUT>VIN. The method comprises charging the battery from VIN while its cells are arranged substantially in parallel, then reconfiguring the switches to arrange some of the charged cells substantially in series to give VOUT>VIN, and then charging the capacitor therefrom. The cells are thereafter reconfigured back to the parallel arrangement ready to be recharged from VIN. Isolation switches are conveniently provided to isolate the battery from VIN while charging the capacitor.

Intra-Abdominal Pressure Monitoring Device and Method

An apparatus for monitoring the intra-abdominal pressure of a patient includes a urinary catheter (102) connected to a urine valve (250) providing selectable communication between a discharge end of the urinary catheter (102) and either a drain (224) or a fluid source (104). Preferably, the urine valve (250) is adapted for remote actuation and has a housing adapted to resist patient discomfort from leg-valve (250) contact. Plumbing structure desirably maintains fluid supply (225) and drain (223) conduits in a substantially parallel arrangement to assist routing those conduits (225, 223) between a patient's legs. When the urine valve (250) is oriented to permit communication with the fluid source (104), an infusion pump (116′) may be used to infuse a known quantity of fluid through the urine valve (250) and into the patient's bladder (216). A pressure transducer (218) desirably is connected in-circuit to indicate the fluid's pressure and avoid pressure fluctuations induced by system components. To facilitate the infusion process, an automatic flow control device may be included in a fluid supply path (225) and arranged to permit repetitive operation of a syringe (116′) to inject a bolus of fluid into the patient's bladder (216). Subsequent to making a pressure measurement, the urine valve (250) is returned to the bladder (216) draining position.
