Oscillating water column wave energy converter incorporated into caisson breakwater

A caisson breakwater provided with vertical duct 2″, room 3″, air-duct 4″, self-rectifying turbine 5″. Under the fluctuations of wave pressure on the outer opening 6, the water, alternately, enters and exits, so that the air in room 3″, alternately, is compressed and expands, and an alternate air flow is produced in the air-duct 4″. The vertical duct 2″ and the room 3′, form a U-conduit, and the air in the room 3″ acts as a spring. The eigenperiod of oscillations in said U-conduit grows as the width of the vertical duct 2″ is reduced and / or the length of said vertical duct is increased, and / or the width and height of the room 3″ is increased. The eigenperiod is fixed close to the wave period of the waves which convey the largest amount of wave energy in a year, so as to absorb a very large quantity of wave energy.

The system is based on a semi-submersible-oscillating water column wave energy integrated electricity generation platform without supporting stand columns, and comprises a seaborne wind electricity device and an oscillating water column wave energy electricity generation device. By means of the wave energy electricity generation device, vertical reciprocating motion of a water column is converted into reciprocating motion of a gas, and then electricity generation of wave energy is completed through an air turbine generator. According to the system, a bottom floating box and anchor chains of the semi-submersible platform are fully utilized; as the wave energy electricity generation device vertically moves with waves, the electricity generation efficiency is reduced, and the floating box can slow down vertical vibration; the anchor chains can further prevent the wave energy electricity generation device from vertically moving. According to the system, the structure of the supporting stand columns is not used, the construction process is simplified, and the problem of structural fatigue produced by the supporting stand columns is avoided. Compared with a traditional three-stand column semi-submersible blower, the waterplane area of the system is increased, thus steady moment of inertia is large, and the whole stability of a floating basis is improved.

Wave energy turbine for oscillating water column systems

The dual rotor turbine configuration efficiently harnesses oceanic wave energy within an oscillating water column system. The up and down movement of the waves creates a bi-directional pneumatic airflow which spins the twin turbine assemblies. The resulting rotary force is then utilized to drive two electrical generators simultaneously. Each turbine rotor set is composed of a radial array of identical asymmetrical airfoil blades (similar to NASA GA(W)-1). The two rotor sets are assembled as back-to-back mirror images. Both rotor sets are locked to a common axle by means of sprag-type freewheeling clutches. This configuration provides for smooth and continuous unidirectional movement of the axial drive line which drives the two generators.
