Multiple-effect distillation (MED) is a distillation process often used for sea water desalination. It consists of multiple stages or "effects". In each stage the feed water is heated by steam in tubes, usually by spraying saline water onto them. Some of the water evaporates, and this steam flows into the tubes of the next stage (effect), heating and evaporating more water. Each stage essentially reuses the energy from the previous stage, with successively lower temperatures and pressures after each one. Additionally, between stages this steam uses some heat to preheat incoming saline water.

Process for desalination of saline water, especially water, having increased product yield and quality

A desalination process is disclosed which combining two or more substantially different water treatment processes in a unique manner to desalinate saline water, especially sea water, to produce a high yield of high quality fresh water, including potable water, at an energy consumption equivalent to or less than much less efficient prior art desalination processes. In this process a nanofiltration step is synergistically combined with at least one of sea water reverse osmosis, multistage flash distillation. multieffect distillation of vapor compression distillation to provide an integrated desalination system by which sea water can be efficiently and economically converted to high quality potable water in yields which are at least 70%-80% greater than the yields available from the prior art processes. Typically a process of this invention using the nanofiltration initial step will produce, with respect to sea water feed properties, calcium, magnesium, sulfate and bicarbonate ion content reductions of 63%-94%, pH decreases of about 0.4-0.5 units and total dissolved solids content reductions of 35%-50%.

An optimal thermal seawater desalination process is disclosed, which combines two or more substantially different water pretreatment processes in a unique manner and in a special configuration, hereto unknown to prior desalination arts, to produce a high yield of high quality fresh water, including potable water. In this process a two stage NF membrane pretreatment unit (NF2) with an energy recovery turbo charger (TC) device in between the stages or equipped with an energy recovery pressure exchanger (PX) is synergistically combined with at least one thermal desalination unit to form a dual hybrid of NF2-Thermal (FIG. 4 ), or alternatively the two stage NF2 unit is synergistically combined with a two stage SWRO unit (SWRO2) with an energy recovery TC in between the stages or combined with one stage SWRO (SWRO1) equipped with an energy recovery TC or PX system and the reject from the SWRO2 or SWRO1 unit is made make-up to a thermal unit to form a tri-hybrid of NF2-SWRO2 reject-Thermal (FIG. 5 ). In both the cases of di- or trihybrids the thermal unit is equivalent to a multistage flash distillation (MSFD) or multieffect distillation (MED) or vapor compression distillation (VCD) or thermal reheat (RH) evaporator. Typically a process of this invention using the two stage NF2 initial pretreatment step will perform a semi-desalination step by reducing feed TDS by about 35 to 50%, but most important, especially to the thermal seawater desalination process, it removes the water recovery limiting, scale forming hardness ions of Ca++ and Mg++ by better than 80% and their covalent anions of sulfate to better than 95% and bicarbonate to about 65%. The removal of scale forming hardness ions, especially SO4=, and bicarbonates allowed for the operation of thermal unit in the above hybrids at top brine temperature (TBT) much greater than its present TBT limit by the singular conventional process of 120° C. for MSFD and operation of MED or VCD or RH unit at TBT much higher than their present TBT limit of 65-70° C., with many advantages gained by this process over prior art sweater desalination processes. The process of this invention exceeds all prior thermal seawater desalination arts in efficiency, including water yield, product water recovery ratio and unit water cost as well as in energy consumption per unit product which is equivalent or less than other efficient prior art seawater thermal desalination processes. By this process, an NF product recovery ratio of 75 and 80% or better is achieved from the high salinity Gulf sea (TDS≈45,000 ppm) and about an equal product recovery ratio is also obtained from the SWRO or thermal unit when it is operated on NF product for a total water recovery ratio in excess of 52% for seawater

The invention also discloses a process flow for utilizing the low-temperature multieffect seawater distillation desalting system to desalt seawater; the evaporators of the low-temperature multi-effect seawater distillation desalting system are divided into a plurality of sets; each set feeds in parallel; simultaneously, the front of the feeding seawater of the highest-temperature effect evaporator of each set is provided with a heater; residual strong brine of the front evaporator set is collected and beaten to the next evaporator set through the effect intermediate pump, and so on; a product water and strong brine flow in a ladder shape in a series of flash tanks and are gradually subjected to flash evaporation and cooling; steam obtained through flash evaporation enters the evaporator; and finally, the product of the cooled water and the strong brine are pumped out through a corresponding water pump respectively.

The tops of the multiple-effect distillation device are communicated with the tube pass of a shell and tube heat exchanger, and the bottom of the multiple-effect distillation device is communicated with a heavy salt water tube. The invention takes the advantages of low heat energy as the energy recourse of desalting process to couple spray vapor and multiple-effect distillation technic and realizes comprehensive utilization of the energy and resources.

Distillation system

A multiple effect distillation chamber includes a plurality of separate distilling chambers and a drain chamber at a downstream end of the distilling chambers. The drain chamber functions to create a vacuum to draw volatile gases and impurities collected at the end of the distilling chambers into the drain chamber. The drain chamber cools the volatile gases via cooling water, whereby the cooling water and volatile gases are not mixed during the cooling process, such that the cooling water may be recycled and reused. The drain chamber may include two heat exchangers, each receiving cooling water from a separate water source. Utilizing separate water sources in conjunction with the dual heat exchangers of the drain chamber enables the flow rates of the cooling water sources to be adjusted to enable the disposal of waste water from the distiller at any desired temperature without affecting other functions of the distillation system.

The invention relates to a saline treatment system and method belonging to the technical field of water treatment. A concentrating type solar heater, a steam generator, a vacuum multi-effect distillation device, a saline pump, a fresh water pump, a saline heater, an oil pool, an oil pump and a gas and water separator are used in the system and method. High-temperature heat conducting oil generated by the concentrating type solar heater is respectively conveyed to the steam generator and the saline heater, saline pumped in the saline heater is heated to high-temperature saline and then conveyed to the vacuum multi-effect distillation device, and fresh water pumped in the steam generator is heated to steam and then conveyed to the vacuum multi-effect distillation device. Strong saline is finally discharged. As the saline is heated by the high-temperature heat conducting oil generated by solar energy so as to generate the high-temperature saline, and the cycling utilization fo the steam is formed by utilizing gas and water separation, the steam quantity required by a heat exchange evaporator of the vacuum multi-effect distillation device can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, the evaporation efficiency of the saline can be greatly increased, and equipment investment can be reduced.

The coupling device is characterized in that a condensation bypass and a flash vaporization device are additionally arranged on a secondary circuit condensation water or steam pipeline after power generation of a high-temperature gas cooled reactor; the condensation bypass is provided with a heat exchange device, a cooling seawater output pipeline of the heat exchange device is connected with the flash vaporization device, a live steam output pipeline at the top of the flash vaporization device is connected with a multi-effect distillation seawater desalinization device, a heat exchange hot seawater output pipeline at the bottom of the flash vaporization device is combined with the cooling seawater output pipeline and then connected to the heat exchange device of the condensation bypass; the heat exchange hot seawater output pipeline at the bottom of the flash vaporization device is combined with a concentrated seawater output pipeline at the bottom of the multiple-effect distillation seawater desalinization device and then led to the sea. According to the invention, the heat energy of condensation water (steam) after power generation can be comprehensively utilized, so that the energy utilization efficiency of the high-temperature gas cooled reactor is greatly improved, and meanwhile, the fresh water yield is improved. The coupling device realizes hydropower generation of the high-temperature gas cooled reactor.

Present invention is a practical, highly efficient, structurally simple, low production cost, easy to manufacturing, and inexpensive multi-effect distillation device composed of thin-laminated distiller which is tangled into spiral and becomes layers of centric circle; one side of surface of said distiller is condensing surface which is for condensation of vapor of water, condensed distilled water is drained from underneath of said condensing surface, another side of said distiller is attached with a piece of wick which is made of capillary materials, undistilled water enters from above of the wick, than be absorbed and distributed by said wick. Some of the water absorbed on said wick is evaporated into the vapor of water. There is a gap between condensing surface and wick of each adjacent layers. The top and bottom of said gap is sealed to prevent leaking of the vapor of water.

According to the invention, circulating water is heated by using a heat collector in sunny days, the circulating heated water supplies heat for the vertical type multi-effective distilling device to produce fresh water through a circulating pump; and the rainwater is collected by using a reflecting plate arranged below the heat collector in rainy days and is subjected to depth-type filtration and purification to obtain the fresh water, so that the fresh water can be collected both in sunny days and rainy days, the supply level of the fresh water is increased; and the fresh water collecting and supplying system is particularly suitable for districts which are rich in solar energy and lack of fresh water resources.
