Reducing back-reflection in laser micromachining systems

Systems and methods reduce or prevent back-reflections in a laser processing system. A system includes a laser source to generate an incident laser beam, a laser beam output to direct the incident laser beam toward a work surface along a beam path, and a spatial filter. The system further includes a beam expander to expand a diameter of the incident laser beam received through the spatial filter, and a scan lens to focus the expanded incident laser beam at a target location on a work surface. A reflected laser beam from the work surface returns through the scan lens to the beam expander, which reduces a diameter of the reflected beam and increases a divergence angle of the reflected laser beam. The spatial filter blocks a portion of the diverging reflected laser beam from passing through the aperture and returning to the laser beam output.

Laser welding heat treat process

A method for providing a pre-welding heat treatment to a workpiece surface is described wherein the method includes the steps of: generating through a laser generator a laser beam characterized by a power and focal point; positioning the laser generator such that the focal point of the laser beam is above the workpiece surface so as to generate a defocused laser beam; directing the defocused laser beam toward the workpiece surface so as to project a laser beam spot on the workpiece surface; scanning the laser beam spot over the workpiece surface thereby heating the workpiece surface so as to provide a pre-welding heat treatment; repositioning the laser generator such that the focal point of the laser beam is changed; and laser welding the workpiece with substantially the same power as in the generating step. The method is further adapted for use with a hand held Nd:YAG laser torch, and the workpiece may be a superalloy gas turbine engine component.

Height position detector for work held on chuck table

A height position detector for detecting the height position of an upper surface of a work held on a chuck table, including: an annular spot forming part by which the spot shape of a laser beam oscillated by a laser beam oscillator is formed into an annular shape; a first beam splitter by which the laser beam with the spot shape formed into the annular shape is guided into a first path; a light condenser by which the laser beam guided into the first path is condensed to irradiate the work therewith; a second beam splitter for splitting the reflected light reflected by the work; a first light receiving element for receiving the reflected light transmitted through the second beam splitter; a second light receiving element for receiving the reflected light reflected by the second beam splitter; a light reception region restricting part for restricting the light reception region for the reflected light received by the second light receiving element; and a controller for determining the height position of the upper surface of the work on the basis of the ratio between the quantity of light received by the first light receiving element and the quantity of light received by the second light receiving element.

Position Detection Apparatus and Image Display Apparatus

This position detection apparatus includes a plurality of light receiving portions receiving a reflected laser beam from an indicator, a lens, a masking portion arranged between the light receiving portions and the lens, having a masking surface restricting the reflected laser beam guided to the light receiving portions in a direction orthogonal to a projection surface, and a determination portion determining a three-dimensional position in a projection image indicated by the indicator. The masking surface of the masking portion has such a concave shape that opposing ends thereof are closer to the lens than a central portion thereof.
