High angle is the variety of technical rope rescue techniques used to rescue injured or otherwise incapacitated persons on terrain at slopes of 60º or greater.

Elastomeric balloon support fabric

Balloon catheter covers are elastic fabric structures of interconnected yarns, the structure having a high degree of stretch and recovery in the circumferential direction with little change in dimension in the longitudinal direction during multiple pressurization cycles over full range of inflation and deflation of the balloon catheter. The covers have longitudinal yarns positioned at about zero degrees to the balloon axis and reversibly-stretchable, circumferential yarns positioned at a high angle Ø to the axis. A method for making the balloon catheter covers allowing nearly orthogonal placement of circumferential and longitudinal yarns involves triaxial braiding a minimum number of elastomeric braid yarns with multiple axial yarns to provide maximum convergence angle (approaching 90 degrees).

Lightguide illuminator embedded display

InactiveUS20110149201A1Limit Fresnel reflectionMaintain performanceNon-linear opticsDynamic contrastRefractive index
A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal based display is embedded inside a lightguide illuminator sheet which provides illumination of the display without the need for a backlight or frontlight. Light from one or more light sources is coupled into the lightguide sheet and is guided within a range of high angles of incidence within the sheet by total internal reflection. The guided light illuminating portions of the display which are in diffusing state is scattered such that some of the light is allowed to escape total internal reflection, providing visibility of the display. Guided light illuminating portions of the display which are in non-diffusing state remains guided within the lightguide illuminator sheet. Combining multiple lightguide embedded displays can be used to provide a three-dimensional display. When a low refractive index cladding is applied to the surfaces of the lightguide embedded display, the display is robust in a dirty environment, and / or can be laminated to adjacent lightguide embedded displays. The use of one or more coupled light sources, such as light emitting diodes, provides color by combining one or more colored light sources or by time-sequentially driving one or more colored light sources. The lightguide illuminator embedded display may further be used as a content dependent active backlight for an LCD display panel to provide improved dynamic contrast.

Illumination system and method for recycling light to increase the brightness of the light source

An illumination system for increasing the brightness of a light source comprises an optical recycling device coupled to the light source, preferably light emitting diode (LED), for spatially and / or angularly recycling light. The optical recycling device spatially recycles a portion of rays of light emitted by the LED back to the light source using a reflector or mirror and / or angularly recycles high angle rays of light and transmits small angle rays of light, thereby increasing the brightness of the light source's output.

Wind energy production using kites and ground mounted power generators

Systems and methods are described for creating low cost energy using kites connected to ground mounted equipment. In power mode the kites generate maximum energy by positioning the kite at a high angle of attack relative to wind direction. The kite is allowed to travel a distance limited only by the length of line attached. The opposite end of the line is attached to a reel capable of turning a shaft to create mechanical or electrical energy. Upon reaching a controlled length, the kite is repositioned to a minimum angle of attack relative to the wind to minimize energy required to retrieve the kite. The shaft rotation is then reversed thereby winding the line on the reel. Energy is expended in retrieval mode. The difference in energy during power and retrieval mode is the net energy gain available for useful work.

Formation modeling while drilling for enhanced high angle for horizontal well placement

Methods for three-dimensionally characterizing a reservoir while drilling a high angle or horizontal wellbore through the reservoir are disclosed. An initial reservoir model for the reservoir is selected and a section is extracted for a planned trajectory of the wellbore. A secondary model is generated by performing secondary modeling for at least part of the planned trajectory. An area of interest is identified within the secondary model where statistical uncertainty is high. Possible causes of the statistical uncertainty are identified for the area of interest within the secondary model that are not present or accounted for in the initial reservoir model. A set of parameters for the area of interest are defined at that are based on the possible causes of statistical uncertainty. The area of interest is logged with at least one logging while drilling LWD tool. Sensitivities of the LWD tool response to the subset of parameters are evaluated by performing at least one tertiary model for a range of the subset of parameters. The most sensitive parameters from the subset of parameters and corresponding measurements are identified. One or more real-time LWD measurements to be used for proactive well placement along the planned trajectory are identified and are based on the most sensitive parameters. The initial reservoir model is updated while drilling with information from the tertiary model. The model update is based on physics-based modeling or on inversion and on running multiple models and selection of a best candidate model based on correlations between the tool measurements and modeled results for each geologic model.

Repetitive circumferential milling for sample preparation

A method of sample extraction entails making multiple, overlapping cuts using a beam, such as a focused ion beam, to create a trench around a sample, and then undercutting the sample to free it. Because the sidewalls of the cut are not vertical, the overlapping cuts impinge on the sloping sidewalls formed by previous cuts. The high angle of incidence provides a greatly enhanced mill rate, so that making multiple overlapping cuts to produce a wide trench can requires less time than making a single, deep cut around the perimeter of a sample.

Three-dimensional panoramic image generation method and system

The invention relates to a three-dimensional panoramic image generation method. The method comprises the following steps of: shooting a plurality of local images of a panorama at a low angle and a high angle at a horizontal position opposite to a tripod head by using a wide-angle camera respectively; synthesizing a plane composite image from each shot local image; converting the plane composite image into a three-dimensional spherical image; and performing three-dimensional navigation on the three-dimensional spherical image. By the method, the overlap region of the local images can be increased, so that the image effect is smoother and the obtained three-dimensional panoramic image is more similar to a real scene when the local images are synthesized into the plane composite image. The invention also provides a three-dimensional panoramic image generation system.

Hybrid reflector system for lighting device

A hybrid reflector system for use in lighting application. The system is particularly well-suited for use with solid state light sources, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). Embodiments of the system include a bowl-shaped outer reflector and an intermediate reflector disposed inside the bowl and proximate to the light source. The reflectors are arranged to interact with the light emitted from the source to produce a beam having desired characteristics. Some of the light passes through the system without interacting with any of the reflector surfaces. This uncontrolled light, which is already emitting in a useful direction, does not experience optical loss normally associated with one or more reflective bounces. Some of the light emanating from the source at higher angles that would not be emitted within the desired beam angle is reflected by one or both of the reflectors, redirecting that light to achieve a tighter beam.
