Aircraft braking method and apparatus

An aircraft is decelerated by applying a braking force to a wheel of the aircraft as it moves along the ground. An anti skid controller calculates the braking force to be applied by taking into account data relating to the vertical load transmitted between the ground and the wheel and data relating to the slip between the ground and the wheel. Predictions (box 13b) made regarding how the vertical load will change and data (box 13a) concerning the relationship between slip and the ground to wheel friction coefficient are both taken into account when calculating the braking force to be applied. Skids may thereby be predicted in advance and may be reduced or even avoided.

Method and apparatus suitable for measuring the displacement or load on an aircraft component

The load on an aircraft component, such as the load on a landing gear leg during braking, is measured with a contactless, all-weather displacement measuring system. The system includes a control unit a controllable microwave emitter of electromagnetic radiation and a microwave detector comprising a plurality of antennae. When the aircraft component is subjected to a load relative movement of the emitter and detector is caused. The detector generates in response to microwave radiation received from the focused beam of radiation emitted by the emitter a signal that is received by a signal processor of the control unit. The signal received by the control unit depends on the relative positions of the emitter and detector. The control unit is arranged to provide an output signal representative of the load sustained by the aircraft component. The system may be used to control braking in dependence on the output signal so as to maximise braking efficiency without overloading the landing gear leg.

Floating disc brake assembly with interlocking hub and rotor

A floating disc brake assembly comprises a hub and a rotor in mating alignment therewith through one or more interlocking lobes that are alternatingly arranged about an outer peripheral edge of the hub and an internal edge of the rotor. The rotor is coupled to, and disposed circumferentially around, the hub. As a friction element is applied to the rotor to decrease rotation thereof during a braking operation, the interlocking lobes transmit brake torque from the rotor to the hub through a gap existing therebetween. The gap retards heat flow. The gap also permits radial float. Differing hub and rotor widths, or a floating clearance between a fastener and the hub, both permit axial float. Warpage and knockback of the rotor are reduced.

Establishing connection across a connection-oriented first telecommunications network in response to a connection request from a second telecommunications network

A first multi protocol label switching (MPLS) enabled Internet Protocol (IP) data network is able to transmit data to a second MPLS enabled IP network via a legacy optical network, which would not otherwise be able to handle the user network interface (UNI) protocols required to be used within an MPLS network environment, by means of configuring the legacy optical network and its traditional network management system (TNMS) so that they simulate or emulate an MPLS enabled optical network. The simulation / emulation of an MPLS network is performed as follows: when a first legacy network element (NE) receives a connection request (a UNI request) from the MPLS network under a UNI protocol, the UNI request is passed to the TNMS, which then sets the required connection across the legacy network via a second edge NE to an NE of the second IP network. Once the connection has been set, the TNMS instructs the edge NE to send a return signal to the requesting network indicating that the connection has been successfully set. Data packets may then be transmitted across the network.
