Prosthetic valve crimping device

An improved crimping mechanism well-suited for use with stented prosthetic heart valves. The crimping mechanism includes a plurality of jaws configured for linear non-rotational movement toward a central axis. A rotational plate is formed with a plurality of spiral grooves or tracks for engaging the jaws. Rotational movement of the spiral tracks produces linear movement of the jaws. Nesting of the inner ends of the jaws permits each to be acted on along different radial lines while their inner faces move together evenly to reduce the crimping aperture in a smooth fashion. The crimping mechanism is particularly well-suited for use with stented prosthetic heart valves, such as a prosthetic aortic valve, though it can also be applied to other stented heart valves, venous valves, and even stent grafts which tend to be fairly large.

Dual band radio frequency (RF) & optical communications antenna and terminal design methodology and implementation

A dual-band antenna is provided that combines two normally disparate communications modes into a single compact aperture minimizing overall mass and volume, while maintaining high performance efficiency and reciprocity of each individual mode. The antenna is compatible with both optical (near-IR / visible) and RF (microwave / millimeter-wave) transceiver subsystems for high bandwidth communications, applicable primarily to long- to extremely long-range (space-to-ground) link distances. The optical link provides high bandwidth while the RF provides a lower data-rate weather backup, accommodation for traditional navigation techniques, and assistance in cueing the extremely tight optical beam by matching the RF beamwidth to an optical fine-steering mechanism field-of-regard. The configuration is built around a near-diffraction-limited high performance primary mirror shared by both a direct-fed RF antenna design and a Cassegrain optical telescope. Material properties are exploited to combine the optical secondary mirror with the RF feed structure, providing a collimated optical beam interface at the antenna vertex.

Control algorithm for autothermal reformer

According to typical inventive practice, an algorithm controls a reformer in order to produce a pure hydrogen stream for a hydrogen-using device. The inventive algorithmic feedback control maintains the permeate hydrogen stream at a permeate pressure setpoint. Pressure measurements are performed of the permeate hydrogen stream. Control data (e.g., including a “lookup” table) establishes at least three output levels (scaled from zero output to maximum output) of the permeate hydrogen stream and, for each output level, five variable setpoints (air flow rate, hydrocarbon flow rate, and steam flow rate preceding the reformer reaction; steam flow rate preceding the water-gas shift reaction; shaft rotational speed in the energy recovery device). The pressure signals and the control data are processed to determine the optimal output level and the associated variable setpoints. Control signals are sent to adjust the variables to the determined variable setpoints.
