Method for resolving meeting conflicts within an electronic calendar application

A method for resolving meeting conflicts for an electronic calendar application is disclosed. After receiving a request for setting a first meeting schedule for a first meeting, an electronic calendar application sets a first meeting schedule and a first meeting priority number associated with the first meeting. In response to a request to set a second meeting schedule for a second meeting, and the second meeting schedule conflicts with the first meeting schedule, the electronic calendar application determines whether a second meeting priority number associated with the second meeting is higher than the first meeting priority number associated with the first meeting. If the second meeting priority number is determined to be higher than the first meeting priority number, then the electronic calendar application overrides the first meeting schedule with the second meeting schedule. Next, the electronic calendar application informs a meeting scheduler of that first meeting that the first meeting has been overridden by the second meeting schedule.

Electronic presentation of world time zones

ActiveUS20110151415A1Minimizing departureVisual indicationVisual indicationsDisplay deviceDaylight
An electronically generated simultaneous display of the local time within multiple time zones in the world is adjusted to accommodate local time arising from Daylight Saving Time. A preferred modified south polar projection of the Earth which schematically depicts the Northern Hemisphere is divided into geographical time zones. Each geographic time zone is associated with a time marker that points to an adjacent time scale. Either the geographical time zones or the time markers are adjusted in order to correctly display the ongoing time changes resulting from the continuous observation of Daylight Saving Time in time zones of the world. As further features, a user may adjust the display to present a hypothetical time and the corresponding times experienced in different time zones around the world. A user may have a specific time zone highlighted by invoking data, such as a city name, a telephone area code or an address book contact reference, which is associated with specific time zone. Conversely, highlighting a time zone may invoke a list of data associated with that time zone, e.g. city names, countries.

Method and apparatus for generating recurring events in a calendar/schedule system

InactiveUS6272074B1Storage requirement is minimizedMinimization needsVisual indicationOptical signalsInfinite numberData mining
An electronic calendaring and scheduling capability that minimizes storage requirements. Repetitive calendar events are stored as single entries using an expression language. The expression language provides an ability for expressing how often the event recurs. Thus, the days on which the event occurs are computed from an expression stored in a repetitive event. Further, the expression language provides the ability to identify exceptions and to define an infinite number of recurring events from the original recurrent event definition. Events are generated by obtaining a recurrency expression of a first event. The recurrency expression is converted to one or more recurring dates. A beginning date of the first event is also obtained. Using one or more recurring dates and the beginning date, one or more second events are generated in response. The present invention provides the first event and the one or more second events to the users in one or more calendars. The present invention further utilizes a recurrency expression including one or more anti-event expressions. Anti-events have the same format as the recurring event. The anti-event expressions are used to generate one or more exception dates. The exception dates cancel at least one of the recurring dates.

System and methods for scheduling and tracking events across multiple time zones

An electronic Personal Information Manager (PIM) including a calendar / scheduling system with an EarthTime(TM) module is described. In operation, the system tracks different types of times: "local" time, "home" time, and "remote" time. Home time is the time zone of where the user typically spends most of his or her time; this is usually the time zone for the user's home office. Local time is the time for the locality where the user is located physically at any particular instance in time. "Remote" time represents the time zones of the other individuals (i.e., other than the user). The system may show events and appointments in the user's own "local" time (or other user-selected type of time), regardless of where the user is presently located. Using these three types of time (i.e., "local" time, "home" time, and "remote" time), the system provides improved interface and methods for scheduling and managing activities, such a phone conference, across multiple time zones.
