Biased utility receptacle assembly

A pivoting utility receptacle assembly for use with a work surface, such as a desktop. The assembly includes a base member positionable within an opening in the work surface and a receptacle member that is pivotally mounted to the base member. A biasing member is engaged between the receptacle member and the base member, and biases the receptacle member to a partially exposed position with respect to the base member. The assembly also has a locking mechanism including a latch on the receptacle member which engages the base member and secures the receptacle member in a closed position with respect to the base member until such time as it is desired to expose the receptacle member. The movement of the receptacle member out of the base member under the influence of the biasing member is controlled by a movement controlling assembly engaged between the receptacle member and the base member.

Copper grid repair technique for lightning strike protection

A method for reestablishing the electrical continuity of an electrically conductive layer of a composite aircraft wing damaged by a lightning strike or other mechanical event is disclosed in which a copper patch replaced the damaged section of the electrically conductive layer contained. The repair is performed by first removing any surfacers, fasteners, and damaged electrically conductive layer to expose a portion of the underlying composite skin. A copper patch having a copper foil section coupled to an unsupported film adhesive is then introduced onto an underlying composite skin opening contained within an undamaged section of a copper foil grid and covered with resin-impregnated fiberglass material. The film adhesive and resin-impregnated fiberglass material are then cured and fasteners are then reinserted within the fiberglass material, copper patch and underlying composite skin. The surface of the composite wing is then reprimed and repainted to complete the repair.

Plasma ignition for direct injected internal combustion engines

An apparatus and method for the creation, placement and control of an area of electrical ionization within an internal combustion engine combustion chamber. This area of electrical ionization is positioned so that all of the fuel being injected into the combustion chamber must pass next to or through the area of electrical ionization to ensure that combustion has been initiated for all of the fuel as it is injected. This area of electrical ionization can be kept on as long as it is necessary to insure that the all of the fuel that is injected into the combustion chamber can be completely combusted. An engine equipped with this electrical ionization device has its fuel economy enhanced by timely, controlled, and complete combustion of all of the fuel injected into its combustion chamber. Furthermore, the pollutant emissions of both oxides of nitrogen and unburned hydrocarbons are reduced dramatically. Further, cold starting capability of this engine is greatly enhanced by a major reduction in the time necessary for the engine to warm up and a major reduction of pollutants created by the engine during the warm-up period. Additionally, this method of combustion also allows the engine to operate at a higher speed (rpm) allowing an increase in peak power output.

System for efficiently transporting large quantities of initially, loose pieces of scrap sheet metal

This invention relates to a system for efficiently transporting large quantities of initially loose pieces of irregularly shaped scrap sheet metal by temporarily compressing batches of such pieces together into unitary slabs and then forming stacks of numerous slabs, arranged in closely fitted rows within open-top railroad cars or truck trailers. Each slab is formed by ramming a batch of pieces against a vertical plate so that the slab is generally vertically arranged. The slab is then allowed to gravity-fall upon a downwardly tilted table. A second slab is formed and similarly allowed to fall on the table in end-to-end contact with the first slab. The table is then tilted into a horizontal position. A horizontal magnet is positioned to overlap and engage both slabs simultaneously. The magnet is supported by a crane which lifts and moves the magnet over the open-top railroad car or truck and deposits the pair of slabs into an adjacent pair of stacks. The successive stacks are arranged in closely positioned rows for substantially filling the car or trailer which then transports the slabs to a recycling location.

Wastewater management system

A method of and an apparatus for rejuvenating a wastewater treatment system of the type including a septic tank, an aerobic treatment unit or the like connected by a pipe to a plugged downstream soil absorption system includes a wastewater treatment unit which is interposed between the septic unit / aerobic treatment unit and the downstream soil absorption system. The wastewater treatment unit includes a single piece or a multiple piece solids settling and retention basin within which is suspendingly supported a wastewater treatment mechanism essentially of the type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,264,120. The wastewater treatment mechanism includes filters for filtering and settling solids from wastewater and flow equalization ports for effecting flow equalization thereby eliminating flow surges to the downstream plugged soil absorption system. By utilizing an extremely compact solids settling and retention basin and its attendant operative components, solids are prevented from passing beyond the wastewater treatment unit to the failed soil absorption system. In this fashion the wastewater treatment unit of the present invention can rejuvenate wastewater treatment systems which have failed, and if installed prior to such failure, can extend the life thereof substantially indefinitely. The latter and other advantages are achieved at relatively low cost, absent destruction of existing sod or lawn, moving fencing, trees, etc., and absent creating a hazard for individuals, particularly small children.

System and method for producing nanomaterials

This system and method for producing nanomaterials allows for the production of relatively high concentrations of nanoparticles with a minimum of expense, time and energy. Ultrasonic waves, produced at a power of approximately 50 W with a frequency of 26.23 kHz, are projected on a material sample while, simultaneously, a fluid stream jet is projected on the material sample. The ultrasonic waves, in the presence of the fluid jet, create cavities that explode at the surface of the solid material, leading to creation of cracks in the material surface. With the increase in the number of cracks in the material, the solid material erodes. The eroded material, which is on the nanometer scale, is collected on a suitable substrate, such as silicon. This method allows for the preparation of nanoparticles from any solid material, in particular very hard materials, such as diamond, silicon carbide and the like.

Microtreatment of iron-based alloy. apparatus and method therefor and articles resulting therefrom

Iron-based alloys and articles in strips, sheets, workpieces and the like are converted into high strength steel with a minimum of cost, time and effort, including producing dual phase materials. This is achievable by extremely rapid micro-treating of low, medium, and high carbon iron-based alloys and articles by rapid heating and rapid cooling at least a portion of the alloy / article. This heating step involves nearly immediately heating the iron-based alloy to a selected temperature above its austenite conversion temperature. Then, the alloy is immediately quenched, also at an extremely fast rate, on at least a portion of the iron-based alloy in a quenching unit adjacent the heating unit. This procedure forms high strength alloy in a desired area, depending upon where the treatment was performed.
