The present invention produces a combustion simulation of flames, burning logs and embers in a fuel-burning fireplace or like device. One or more light source(s), such as LEDs, are used to transmit light to and through: a flame cut-out panel or flame cut-out mask to simulate the flame effect; cut-outs in logs to simulate a burning edge of a log; elements or refractories that refract the light to simulate real burning embers. Fiber optic cables, or any other material that facilitates the transmission of light, may be used to assist in transmitting the visible light. A motor driven rotating disk that includes apertures may be used to fragment the transmission of the visible light. In addition, the light source may be controlled by a sequencing device to closely approximate the pulsing intensities of light seen in actual flames, the edges of burning logs, and ember beds.

In addition, the control members of this invention may be implemented into various stationary and/or portable grills and ovens for cooking food, various fireplaces or burners for heating interior, and the like.

In certain embodiments, a control valve assembly for gas heaters and gas fireplace devices includes a housing. The housing can define an inlet for accepting fuel from a fuel source, a first outlet for delivering fuel to an oxygen depletion sensor, and a second outlet for delivering fuel to a burner. The assembly can include a valve body configured to selectively provide fluid communication between the inlet and one or more of the first outlet and the second outlet, and can include an actuator configured to move the valve body relative to the housing. A monitoring and control system for use with a decorative heating appliance such as a fireplace, stove, or fireplace insert. The monitoring and control system includes a sensor module, a computer system, a controller, and a communication system. The sensor module is configured to monitor a burner, gas valve, and ignition system of the heating appliance and generate monitoring signals. The controller is configured to generate fault condition signals based on the monitoring signals. The communication system is configured to communicate the fault condition signals to the computer system, wherein the computer system is located remotely from a living space within which the heating appliance resides. The flame simulating assembly has a light source for producing the image of flames, a screen, and a simulated interior fireplace wall positioned behind the screen. The screen has a front surface and is positioned in a path of light from the light source. The screen is adapted to transmit the image of flames through the front surface. The front surface of the screen includes an observation region, which is adapted to permit observation of part of the simulated interior fireplace wall.

A lenticular fireplace and methods for simulating a fire within a fireplace are disclosed. In one respect, a fire is simulated with a lenticular screen. The lenticular screen includes a lenticular lens layer and an image layer, wherein the image layer comprises one or more images of a fire. A device is coupled to the lenticular screen that moves the lenticular screen to alter a viewed image of the fire. In another respect, the lenticular screen is disposed within a fireplace enclosure. In another respect, a fireplace includes a convertible heated glass apparatus. The apparatus is used in a front wall of an enclosure. The front wall includes an electrically conductive panel coupled to a phase change material. Electrical terminals are operatively connected to the electrically conductive panel for applying a voltage across the electrically conductive panel to heat the front wall and convert the phase change material from an opaque solid to a less opaque liquid to allow viewing through the front wall. In another respect, a flame simulation apparatus simulates a flickering flame effect on a translucent screen. The flame simulation apparatus includes the translucent screen having a front surface and a back surface, a bobble-flame, a device to move the bobble-flame, and a light source to reflect light off of the bobble-flame and onto the translucent screen.
