Self-aspirating high-area-ratio inter-turbine duct assembly for use in a gas turbine engine

In various embodiments, the present invention provides a means for improving gas turbine engine performance by applying fluid flow control to the inter-turbine duct joining a high-pressure turbine spool and an associated low-pressure turbine spool, allowing the low-pressure turbine spool to have a relatively larger diameter than the high-pressure turbine spool. One or more unobstructed fluid flow paths between one or more boundary layer suction ports disposed within the upstream end of the outer-body surface of the inter-turbine duct and the suction side of the associated low-pressure turbine nozzle are provided. Advantageously, the natural static pressure difference between these points results in a self-aspirating assembly. The fluid flow control provided by the respective suction and blowing forces generated allows for a relatively larger diameter low-pressure turbine spool and / or relatively fewer low-pressure turbine nozzles to be used than is possible with conventional systems, assemblies, and methods. Thus, a gas turbine engine weight savings and optimized performance may be achieved.

Dpi formulation containing sulfoalkyl ether cyclodextrin

An inhalable dry powder formulation containing SAE-CD and an active agent is provided. The formulation is adapted for administration by DPI. The SAE-CD serves as a carrier rather than as an absorption enhancer. The average particle size of the SAE-CD is large enough to preclude (for the most part) pulmonary deposition thereof. Following release from the DPI device, the SAE-CD-containing particles dissociate from the active agent-containing particles in the buccal cavity or throat, after which the active agent-containing particles continue deeper into the respiratory tract. The physicochemical and morphological properties of the SAE-CD are easily modified to permit optimization of active agent and carrier interactions. Drugs having a positive, neutral or negative electrostatic charge can be delivered by DPI when SAE-CD is used as a carrier.

A compressed air stream is cooled to a temperature suitable for its rectification within a lower pressure heat exchanger and a boosted pressure air stream is liquefied or converted to a dense phase fluid within a higher pressure heat exchanger in order to vaporize pumped liquid products. Thermal balancing within the plant is effectuated with the use of waste nitrogen streams that are introduced into the higher and lower pressure heat exchangers. The heat exchangers are configured such that the flow area for the subsidiary waste nitrogen stream within the higher pressure heat exchanger is less than that would otherwise be required so that the subsidiary waste nitrogen streams were subjected to equal pressure drops in the higher and lower pressure heat exchangers. This allows the higher pressure heat exchanger be fabricated with a reduced height and therefore a decrease in fabrication costs.

Pressure Sensitive Bypass Defrost System

A heat recovery ventilator defrost system utilizing a bypass section which supplies warm air in both channels of the heat exchanger to accelerate defrost, continue some ventilation of stale warm air, and recirculate a portion of the stale air flow, so as to warm incoming cold fresh air. When the system is in defrost mode, warm exhaust air to be expelled enters an exhaust inlet port and into an exhaust plenum. Because the air being exhausted (by way of the exhaust fan) through the exhaust plenum is under a positive pressure, the stale air will still be sucked out through exhaust passageway into discharge plenum, but also through the passive non-motorized bypass section into inlet plenum. Further, because fresh air continues to be drawn into inlet plenum, due to the positive pressure, the warm stale air which has passed through the bypass section (flap) into inlet plenum is then drawn through the heat exchanger along the inlet passageway into supply plenum, and out through supply port into the enclosure or dwelling. In this way, the heat recovery ventilators defrost system of the present invention supplies warm air in both channels of the heat exchanger.
