Nanocrystal doped matrixes

The present invention provides matrixes doped with semiconductor nanocrystals. In certain embodiments, the semiconductor nanocrystals have a size and composition such that they absorb or emit light at particular wavelengths. The nanocrystals can comprise ligands that allow for mixing with various matrix materials, including polymers, such that a minimal portion of light is scattered by the matrixes. The matrixes of the present invention can also be utilized in refractive index matching applications. In other embodiments, semiconductor nanocrystals are embedded within matrixes to form a nanocrystal density gradient, thereby creating an effective refractive index gradient. The matrixes of the present invention can also be used as filters and antireflective coatings on optical devices and as down-converting layers. The present invention also provides processes for producing matrixes comprising semiconductor nanocrystals.

Method for valuing intellectual property

A method of placing a discrete value on an intellectual property asset through a series of associations and calculations that determine the proportional contribution of an intellectual property asset to the competitive advantage of a related product in a real market. The methodology of the present invention first associates the intellectual property asset with a related tangible asset that embodies the intellectual property asset. After a set of parameters that define the tangible asset are identified, the tangible asset is quantitatively compared to competing tangible assets in the marketplace to determine its overall competitive advantage relative to those competing assets. The contribution of the intellectual property asset to the average competitive advantage of the tangible asset in which it is embodied is calculated by first comparing the intellectual property asset to substitute intellectual property assets that are embodied in competing tangible assets and associated with the same parameter. Next, the intellectual property asset is compared to complementary intellectual property assets that are included in the same tangible asset and associated with the same parameter group. Based upon the proportional competitive advantage contribution of the intellectual property asset to the average competitive advantage of the tangible asset, a percentage of the tangible asset's present value is assigned to the intellectual property asset. The present invention can also be used for planning development of pre-market products, calculating the value of a license to a licensor and licensee, and selecting among alternative research and development investments.

Reconfigurable topology for switching and linear voltage regulators

A configurable voltage regulator (28; 128) operable in either of two selectable modes or topologies is disclosed. In one disclosed embodiment, the voltage regulator (28) can operate as a linear regulator or a switching regulator. A gate driver (35) and an error amplifier (36) is used in each mode. Configuration switches (34) are controlled by a configuration amplifier (40) to connect the error amplifier (36) to the gate driver (35) in the linear regulator mode, or to connect the error amplifier (36) to circuitry (42, 44, 46) for controlling the gate driver (35) in switching regulator mode. In another disclosed embodiment, the voltage regulator (128) generates a negative polarity regulated voltage according to a switching regulator or charge pump topology.

Disposable mask assembly with exhaust filter and valve disc and method of assembling same

A face mask assembly and method of assembling a face mask is provided for a patient that includes a face piece sized to fit over the patient's nose and mouth. The face mask assembly forms a mask chamber between the face piece and the patient's nose and mouth. An inhalation adapter is coupled to the face piece to deliver medication to the chamber. A filter housing is coupled to the face piece and includes a flange section that defines a passageway to connect the mask chamber and the flange section. A filter is positioned in the filter housing. A cover is coupled to the flange section and has an exhalation opening or vent to allow gases from the mask chamber to pass through the filter and escape from the passageway to the atmosphere. In a second embodiment, the filter housing is modified by providing a frame adjacent the bottom with a cross-shaped structure and a retainer button attached to the housing. A valve disc is provided between the retainer button and frame adapted to allow gases from the mask chamber around the valve disc towards the filter. When a patient inhales oxygen through the nasal portion, the valve disc moves towards the mask and partially covers a plurality of apertures to partially block additional air from entering the chamber. When a patient exhales contaminated oxygen, the valve disc moves towards the retainer button to allow a maximum amount of air through the apertures towards the filter.

Messaging over a network

In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for providing a short messaging service for a device to enable communication of a short message over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, the device adapted to access a telecommunications system communicatively coupled to the IP network, the IP network comprising one or more network nodes, the method comprising: subscribing to an attachment notification, the attachment notification indicating that the device has attached to the telecommunications system and is contactable for communication, said subscribing being performed by a network element communicatively coupled between the device and the one or more network nodes; receiving, at the network element, the attachment notification when the device has attached to the telecommunications system, the attachment notification comprising identification information for the device; and registering the device with at least one of the one or more network nodes for communication of short messages over the IP network, said registering being performed by the network element based on at least some of the identification information received in the attachment notification.
