Multi-reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometer with isochronous curved ion interface

The present invention relates generally to a multi-reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR TOF MS). To improve mass resolving power of a planar MR TOF MS, a spatially isochronous and curved interface may be used for ion transfer in and out of the MR TOF analyzer. One embodiment comprises a planar grid-free MR TOF MS with periodic lenses in the field-free space, a linear ion trap for converting ion flow into pulses and a C-shaped isochronous interface made of electrostatic sectors. The interface allows transferring ions around the edges and fringing fields of the ion mirrors without introducing significant time spread. The interface may also provide energy filtering of ion packets. The non-correlated turn-around time of ion trap converter may be reduced by using a delayed ion extraction from the ion trap and excessive ion energy is filtered in the curved interface.

Multi-reflecting Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometer With Orthogonal Acceleration

The disclosed apparatus includes a multi-reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF MS) and an orthogonal accelerator. To improve the duty cycle of the ion injection at a low repetition rate dictated by a long flight in the MR-TOF MS, multiple measures may be taken. The incoming ion beam and the accelerator may be oriented substantially transverse to the ion path in the MR-TOF, while the initial velocity of the ion beam is compensated by tilting the accelerator and steering the beam for the same angle. To further improve the duty cycle of any multi-reflecting or multi-turn mass spectrometer, the beam may be time-compressed by modulating the axial ion velocity with an ion guide. The residence time of the ions in the accelerator may be improved by trapping the beam within an electrostatic trap. Apparatuses with a prolonged residence time in the accelerator provide improvements in both sensitivity and resolution.

Laminated lens for focusing ions from atmospheric pressure

A thin laminated high transmission electro-optical lens populated with a plurality of apertures in communication with its laminates used to improve the collection, focusing, and selection of ions generated from atmospheric pressure sources, such as electrospray, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, inductively coupled plasma, discharge, photoionization and atmospheric pressure matrix assisted laser desorption ionization. The laminated lens is made of alternating layers of electrically insulating and metal laminates. The geometry of the lens may be planar or shaped into various curve shapes, any of which act to optimize both the direct current (DC) and alternate current (AC) electric field geometries and strengths across the lens for transferring virtually all the ions from the ion source into an ion-focusing region adjacent and upstream of a high pressure or atmospheric pressure interface to a mass spectrometer, ion mobility analyzer, or combination thereof. Mass spectrometer and method of determining mass-to-charge ratio of ion

The present invention provides a time of flight mass spectrometer having a spiral flight path, whose mass resolution can be appropriately changed with respect to the analysis object or other factor without any complicated alteration or addition of the mechanical construction. In a specific form of the invention, the mass spectrometer includes deflecting electrodes 20-23 located between semi-cylindrical electrodes 11 and 12 for making ions fly along a spiral path. The deflecting electrodes 20-23 generate deflecting electric fields for shifting the ions in the axial direction of the semi-cylindrical electrodes 11 and 12. The voltage applied to the deflecting electrodes 20-23 is changed according to the mass resolution required. The deflecting electric fields are generated or removed with the change of the voltage, which makes the ions fly either along a spiral path or in the same loop orbit. The flight distance of the ions can be controlled as desired by regulating the voltage so that the ions fly in the loop orbit an appropriate number of times. Thus, the mass resolution can be arbitrarily controlled.

Electrostatic Mass Spectrometer with Encoded Frequent Pulses

A method, apparatus and algorithms are disclosed for operating an open electrostatic trap (E-trap) or a multi-pass TOF mass spectrometer with an extended flight path. A string of start pulses with non equal time intervals is employed for triggering ion packet injection into the analyzer, a long spectrum is acquired to accept ions from the entire string and a true spectrum is reconstructed by eliminating or accounting overlapping signals at the data analysis stage while using logical analysis of peak groups. The method is particularly useful for tandem mass spectrometry wherein spectra are sparse. The method improves the duty cycle, the dynamic range and the space charge throughput of the analyzer and of the detector, so as the response time of the E-trap analyzer. It allows flight extension without degrading E-trap sensitivity.

Method and fine-control collimator for accurate collimation and precise parallel alignment of scanned ion beams

In a system for implanting workpieces with an accurately parallel scanned ion beam, a fine-control collimator construct is used to reduce the deviation of the scanned ion beam from a specified axis of parallelism and thereby improve its collimation. The shape of the fine-control collimator matches the ribbon shape of the beam and correction of parallelism in two orthogonal directions is possible. Measurement of the non-parallelism is accomplished by sampling the scanned beam in two planes and comparing timing information; and such measurement is calibrated to the orientation of the workpiece in the plane where ion implantation occurs. Measurement of non-uniformity in the doping profile is accomplished using the same means; and the scan waveform is adjusted to substantially remove any non-uniformity in the doping profile.

A dual ion trap mass analyzer includes adjacently positioned first and second two-dimensional ion traps respectively maintained at relatively high and low pressures. Functions favoring high pressure (cooling and fragmentation) may be performed in the first trap, and functions favoring low pressure (isolation and analytical scanning) may be performed in the second trap. Ions may be transferred between the first and second trap through a plate lens having a small aperture that presents a pumping restriction and allows different pressures to be maintained in the two traps. The differential-pressure environment of the dual ion trap mass analyzer facilitates the use of high-resolution analytical scan modes without sacrificing ion capture and fragmentation efficiencies.

Orthogonal ion injection apparatus and process

An orthogonal ion injection apparatus and process are described in which ions are directly injected into an ion guide orthogonal to the ion guide axis through an inlet opening located on a side of the ion guide. The end of the heated capillary is placed inside the ion guide such that the ions are directly injected into DC and RF fields inside the ion guide, which efficiently confines ions inside the ion guide. Liquid droplets created by the ionization source that are carried through the capillary into the ion guide are removed from the ion guide by a strong directional gas flow through an inlet opening on the opposite side of the ion guide. Strong DC and RF fields divert ions into the ion guide. In-guide orthogonal injection yields a noise level that is a factor of 1.5 to 2 lower than conventional inline injection known in the art. Signal intensities for low m / z ions are greater compared to convention inline injection under the same processing conditions.
