The method creates a mapping table that includes entries corresponding to architectural registers. Each entry includes a physical register index and shadow bit of a first physical register mapped to an architectural register. In response to a detection that an update occurs to an architectural register in a transaction and its shadow bit being an invalid value, the method sets the shadow bit to be a valid value and sets a shadow register for the architectural register using the physical register index of the first physical register. The method maps a second physical register to the shadow register in order to save a modified value generated by an update process and saves the original value before the update process by use of the first physical register corresponding to the architecture register.

A method of maintaining coherency in a multiprocessor computer system wherein each processing unit's cache has sectored cache lines. A first cache coherency state is assigned to one of the sectors of a particular cache line, and a second cache coherency state, different from the first cache coherency state, is assigned to the overall cache line while maintaining the first cache coherency state for the first sector. The first cache coherency state may provide an indication that the first sector contains a valid value which is not shared with any other cache (i.e., an exclusive or modified state), and the second cache coherency state may provide an indication that at least one of the sectors in the cache line contains a valid value which is shared with at least one other cache (a shared, recently-read, or tagged state). Other coherency states may be applied to other sectors in the same cache line. Partial intervention may be achieved by issuing a request to retrieve an entire cache line, and sourcing only a first sector of the cache line in response to the request. A second sector of the same cache line may be sourced from a third cache. Other sectors may also be sourced from a system memory device of the computer system as well. Appropriate system bus codes are utilized to transmit cache operations to the system bus and indicate which sectors of the cache line are targets of the cache operation.

During the decoding of the enhancement layer bitstream, a context model is maintained using an edge map, and each enhancement layer bitstream is entropy decoded using the context model to determine a significance value corresponding to pixels of the reconstructed residual image and a sign bit for each significant pixel, and a pixel value of the reconstructed residual image is reconstructed according to the significance value, sign bit and an uncertainty interval. Then, the reconstructed residual images are added to the reconstructed base layer image to produce the reconstructed depth image.

An improved method and system for performing dynamic online multi-parameter optimization for autonomic computing systems are provided. With the method and system of the present invention, a simplex, i.e. a set of points in the parameter space that has been directly sampled, is maintained. The system's performance with regard to a particular utility value is measured for the particular setting of configuration parameters associated with each point in the simplex. A new sample point is determined using the geometric transformations of the simplex. The method and system provide mechanisms for limiting the size of the simplex that is generated through these geometric transformations so that the present invention may be implemented in noisy environments in which the same configuration settings may lead to different results with regard to the utility value. In addition, mechanisms are provided for resampling a current best point in the simplex to determine if the environment has changed. If a sufficiently different utility value is obtained from a previously sampled utility value for the point in the simplex, then rather than contracting, the simplex is expanded. If the difference between utility values is not sufficient enough, then contraction of the simplex is performed. In addition, in order to allow for both real and integer valued parameters in the simplex, a mechanism is provided by which invalid valued parameters that are generated by geometric transformations being performed on the simplex are mapped to a nearest valid value. Similarly, parameter values that violate constraints are mapped to values that satisfy constraints taking care that the dimensionality of the simplex is not reduced.
