Medical instruments and techniques for treating pulmonary disorders

ActiveUS20080132826A1Enhance tissue remodelingReducing lung volumeMedical devicesFluid jet surgical cuttersThermal energyDisease
A surgical instrument for delivering energy to lung tissue, for example to cause lung volume reduction. In one embodiment, an elongated catheter has a handle portion that includes an interior chamber that is supplied with a biocompatible liquid media under pressure. An energy source delivers energy to the media to cause a liquid-to-vapor phase change within the interior chamber and ejects a flow of vapor media from the working end of the catheter. The delivery of energy and the flow of vapor are controlled by a computer controller to cause a selected pressure and selected volume of vapor to propagate to the extremities of the airways. Contemporaneously, the vapor undergoes a vapor-to-liquid phase transition which delivers a large amount of energy to airway tissue. The thermal energy delivered is equivalent to the heat of vaporization of the fluid media, which shrinks and collapses the treated airways. The treated tissue is the maintained in a collapsed state by means of aspiration for a short interval to enhance tissue remodeling. Thereafter, the patient's wound healing response causes fibrosis and further remodeling to cause permanent lung volume reduction.

Agile digital communication network with rapid rerouting

An agile digital communications network has a number of routers that serve as nodes in a mesh network communicating between a user device (e.g., computer, server, etc.) and a target device (e.g., disc storage cabinets, tape, jukebox, etc.). The routers operate on an open shortest path first protocol, each router having two or more interfaces or links to other routers. When a link connected to a router is down and is in the shortest path to another router identified in a communication packet, the packet is forwarded to the identified router on a precalculated alternate route that does not use the unavailable link. IP tunneling assures that routing loops do not occur and send the packet back to the router with the unavailable link because it would have been in the shortest path of an intermediate router. A tunneling technique is provided that maximizes the levels of encapsulation needed at two, regardless of the size or configuration of the network. An unavailable link is not broadcast immediately throughout the network, giving the link an opportunity to be restored before all of the routers are called on to recalculate the shortest paths and alternate paths. During a short interval following the discovery of an unavailable link, then, a router connected to that link is in a state identified as the Use Alternate Path state, and the link is repeatedly checked for availability. Each router calculates and stores the alternative paths to each other router after first calculating the shortest path to each other router. The alternate paths are pulled up and used when an unavailable link is detected. Dijkstra's algorithm is used to calculate the shortest paths. A new algorithm called the iterative dynamic Dijkstra's algorithm is used to calculate the alternative routes.

Methods and systems for locating subjects and providing event notification within a tracking environment and badge for use therein

A method, system and a badge utilized therein utilize both the radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) parts of the electromagnetic spectrum to locate subjects (i.e. objects and persons) within a tracking environment. The system includes a battery-operated, microprocessor-based badge for each subject to be located. Each badge automatically transmits: (1) shorter interval, digitized, infrared light signals to identify a delimited area zone of its subject's location; (2) shorter interval, digitized, lower power RF signals to provide a local area zone of its subject's location; and (3) longer interval, digitized, higher power RF signals to provide a wide area zone of its subject's location. Each badge transmits uniquely identifiable IR and higher power RF signals upon actuation of one or more push button switches integrated on the badge or a change of state of one or more external switch connections. Each higher power, longer interval, RF signal is a “supervisory” pulse. This pulse informs a host computer that the badge is in range of an RF receiver and is functional.

Method for operating a radar system

In a method for operating a radar system, the object is to determine by simple means and at low cost the distance and / or the radial velocity of at least one target object with high resolution. For this purpose, in each measuring phase of the measurement process in the "pulse FMCW radar system", switchover between a transmission mode and a receiving mode is effected a multiple number of times and at short intervals of time. In the transmission mode, all receiving units of the radar system are switched off, while a pulse-shaped (frequency-modulated) transmission signal with time-successive transmission pulses having a specific pulse-on time and a specific carrier frequency is emitted from at least one transmitter unit of the radar system. In receiving mode, all transmitter units are switched off in the pulse-off times of the transmission pulses, while from at least one receiver unit all reflection signals originating from the last emitted transmission pulse are detected as received signal from the entire observation range before emission of the next transmission pulse. The distance and / or the radial velocity of the reflection objects is determined indirectly by the signal processing unit of the radar system by evaluation of the frequency difference and / or phase difference between the transmission signal and the received signal.

Method and System for Estimating Processor Utilization from Power Measurements

ActiveUS20080229127A1No overhead to operating systemsEnergy efficient ICTElectric devicesOperational systemEngineering
A method and system for estimating processor utilization from power measurements provides an estimate of processor utilization that can be computed outside of the processor and operating system. Measurements of the processor power consumption are gathered over short intervals in a histogram. The idle power consumption of the processor is determined, and a threshold value higher than the idle power consumption level is computed from the idle power consumption. The number of histogram counts for bins greater than the threshold is normalized to the total number of measurements, providing a fractional value that corresponds to the processor utilization over the measurement interval. The fractional value can then be used in a power management algorithm that adjusts the frequency and optionally the voltage of the processor or group of processors based on their utilization.

Method and apparatus for providing wireless communication system synchronization

When insufficient traffic is present in the network to maintain synchronization in this manner, other methods must be used. One approach involves making direct measurements of the timing between base stations. This is accomplished in one of two ways. The base may interrupt its transmissions on all sectors for a short interval during which it determines the time of arrival of signals from other base stations. Given knowledge of the other base station locations, time errors relative to all other base stations may be derived. Alternatively, the base may send a short signal at high power in the mobile transmit band. This time-of-arrival of this signal is measured by the surrounding base stations and the time errors between pairs of base stations are computed. In some cases, a base station may be isolated sufficiently from all other base stations in the network such that direct base-to-base measurement is not viable. In this case, a fixed mobile is placed at a location in the handoff region between the isolated cell and another cell in the network. The fixed mobile either performs measurements of base station pilots on command of the base and reports the timing information, or sends a burst transmission at a specified time and power level to be measured by the base stations.

Solid-State Image Sensor and Drive Method for the Same

A burst reading memory section (200) and continuous reading memory section (210) are independently provided for each of the two-dimensionally arrayed pixels (10). The burst reading memory section (200) has capacitors (25001-25104) capable of holding a plurality of signals. The continuous reading memory section (210) has only one capacitor 213. Signal output lines for the two memory sections are separately provided. When a signal produced by photoelectric conversion at the pixel (10) is outputted on a pixel output line (14), the signal can be simultaneously written in the capacitors at both memory sections (200, 201), after which the signals can be separately extracted to the outside at different timings. Therefore, a series of images taken at extremely short intervals of time during a short period of time can be obtained at an arbitrary timing without impeding a continuous image-acquiring operation at a low frame rate. Accordingly, both an ultrahigh-speed imaging operation having a limitation on the number of frames and an imaging that is rather slow but has no limitation on the number of frames can be simultaneously performed.
