One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for processing address page requests in a GPU system that is implementing a virtual memory model. A hardware-based page fault manager included in the GPU system intercepts page faults otherwise processed by a software-based page fault manager executing on a host CPU. The hardware-based page fault manager in the GPU includes a DMA engine capable of reading and writing pages between system memory and frame buffer memory without involving the CPU or operating system. A net improvement in system performance is achieved by processing a significant portion of page faults within the GPU, reducing the overall load on the host CPU.

An error management system and process can be used to identify an erroneous data packet in a data stream. In response to identifying the erroneous data packet, a subsequent valid data packet is located in the data stream. In one embodiment, a plurality of candidate locations of header checksum windows are searched and checked for a valid checksum. Multiple integrity checks of multiple header checksums can be used to reduce the probability of a false positive integrity check. In another embodiment, one or more information data fields can used for determining packet integrity by determining if the fields contain valid information bits.

A distributed system provides error handling wherein the system includes multiple nodes, each node being coupled to multiple node controllers for control redundancy. Multiple system controllers couple to the node controllers via a network bus. A particular node controller may detect an error of that particular node controller. The particular node controller may store error information relating to the detected error in respective nonvolatile memory stores in the system controllers and node controllers according to a particular priority order. In accordance with the particular priority order, for example, the particular node controller may first attempt to store the error information to a primary system controller memory store, then to a secondary system controller memory store, and then to sibling and non-sibling node controller memory stores. The primary system controller organizes available error information for use by system administrators and other resources of the distributed system.
